Here is a bit about Nancy Findley, I think. Might be the "dependent mother" listed in the Overton Pension list of 1883. Nancy Reagan got a pension beginning in July 1879. (184858) So many names are repetious, though. Sarah
Pat, How do you regard the stories that our James Findley had a sister who married David Crockett? Is that another James Findley? And is ours the Captain James Findley? There has been lots of genealogical work done on David Crockett. That's how I worked back to Augusta Co, VA. I appreciate your information. Sarah
Thank you, Sarah! You're a peach. Those Voiles are scattered everywhere, it seems. One reason it is so hard to trace them is that they don't stay put long enough to leave lots of records. Not sure about the reason for this. Helen
Sarah, Think Nancy was born about 1813, John was born in 1802. There is a list of their children in the 1850 census, but it does not list Nancy, Hiram or George. Of course all 3 of these were married but think some of the others were to. Hiram died in Civil War and 2 of his sons are living with James & Elizabeth in the census. Hiram had a daughter Elizabeth that married Goolsby Key. Nancy lived with her son John after John Sr. died and think it was after 1880 that she passed away. James and Elizabeth had a daughter Susannah and although I can't prove it think this is the Susan that married Caleb Lindsey Reagan. Pat
Helen, I will watch for Voiles when I am looking in NC. Lots and lots of Fentress Co families were in Granville or Bute or Warren counties in NC in the late 1700s. They then went west into Rowan or Surry or Wilkes (depending on the date) around 1800 and then into TN through the Cumberland Gap, I guess. After 10 years of watching this Fentress rootsweb list serve, reading the deed books in these counties is almost like reading about friends. Sarah
Is this Robert H. Findley?
Pat, There is a George Finley who was born Nov 28, 1719, in Dublin, Ireland. He died about 1787 in Westmoreland Co, PA. He is related to the Augusta, VA, Finleys. I don't have his descendants but will try to find out if there is a James who might have ended up in NC. Or maybe there is another generation in between. I have James Findley as born about 1780. I'm always amazed at how much traveling all of these families did. I have James Finley's (Findley's) daughter Nancy as born in 1802 in TN. She died in Little Crab sometime after 1880. Do you have more detail on James and Elizabeth ( maybe Love)? Sarah
Does anyone have any info on Manda or Mandy Findley, d/o rRobert Finley. She was born Oct 25, 1882. I would appreciate your help. She lived in Fentress County(Boatland Tn) and married John Choate. Thanks
Hi Sarah, Thank you for looking at the Hiram Love will abstract! Do you think this might be the right line? Except for this have not found anything else that is close, trying to remember how they used to name their children. ( Can anyone help on this? ) The Lindsey's came out of VA there are some families there in the 1700's, I have a will (found online) for a couple of them, Also think they came from England originally. Will look through my paper work and pull out everything I have on Finley's and Lindsey's. After you look it over, then we can decide if we should pursue the George Finley or if I have gone the wrong way with this line. Sarah thank you so much for helping me on this. Pat
It certainly sounds as if you are making progress to me, Sarah. Don't give up. And if you figure out some of the Virginia vs NC bit, maybe you could share with me. It might come in handy with my Voiles line. That's exactly where I am, trying to make it out of East Tennessee in the right direction. And, boy, is that a difficult one! H
Pat, I went to the will of Hiram Love, and I agree that the names sound correct for the family. Have you connected the George Finley back to the big Finley clan in Augusta Co, VA? ( I know that some of those VA Finley people ended up in TN too.) I will try to work in the NC direction now, too. I'm sorry that I had forgotten your earlier advice. I just gave up on the Finley(Findley) end since it seemed impossible for me to sort through. I have not been able to find the Joseph Lindsey family before they got to NC either. I will need to visit some VA genealogical collections, I suspect. I have yet to track any strand of this family to its entrance to America. Thanks for your help. Sarah

I have several branches of Wood families that I'm working on. Some of them I know are related; others I am not sure. I know that Branches 1(a) and 1(b) are related and that the younger ones mentioned in those Branches spent their final years in Clinton County, KY. Is Branch No. 2 related to either 1(a) or 1(b)? Matthew spent most of his life in Fentress County. Jesse spent at least part of his life in KY. He was living in Tompkinsville, KY in 1880. Is Branch No. 3 related to any of the other branches? I know that at least some of this Branch lived in Fentress County. Feel free to correct any information or add more. Branch No. 1(a). William b. 1700. Did anyone else see on the CMT special Small Town Secret's about Pall Mall Tennessee and the Championship game of Pig. It was held at Forbus. The winners won a 400 pound hog. They started out talking about the home of Sargent York. This is a new series that has started and it had alot of small town doings. You can go to www.CMT.com to check it out. It starts out telling of the small towns, and then goes to what people do for entertainment in the towns. Some of the programs were, snake round up, anvil shooting, applachian music, gator's, combine demolation, cowgirl trick riders, mustang round up, civil war enactment, and on. It was very interesting to say the least. Patty

There is another George Crabtree on the 1920 Census -- George W. Crabtree (b. October 29, 1869) who's age is close to George M. Crabtree. He was married to Martha A. Smith. I have them both buried at Frogge's Chapel Cemetery. I also have this George Crabtree as the son of Marion Bailor Crabtree and Amanda Millsaps. This George Crabtree was already married to Martha by 1900 (census shows married 6 years) -- 1900 Census: Fentress County, TN: ED# 16, District 7, Page 2B, Household 31. Martha and Milly, you both know the Crabtree information quite well, does this sound right? The George M. Crabtree (notice the middle initial) buried at Fairview Cemetery has these dates on his tombstone: born: August 23, 1869, died: February 21, 1941. Even though the birth date on the tombstone doesn't seem to match any of the dates on the census records, I'm assuming this is the George Crabtree who married Frankie B. Reagan and is the son of James Crabtree and Martha E. Miller. On the 1910 Census record his middle initial was shown as "M". Does anyone know if this is correct or not? By the way Fabian, on all the census records I've found her, her name is shown as "Frankie" or "Frankie B" -- including the 1900 one (Fentress County, TN: ED# 16, District 8, Page 6B, Household 221) -- where her name is shown as "Frankie B. Reagan".
