There used to be someone by the last name of "Goff" (I've forgotten his first name), who descends from James Taylor Goff and Margaret Louverna (Laverna) Conatser (daughter of David Conatser and Malissa Jane Wood), who posted on the Fentress County mailing list. Since Laverna died in White County, TN, I thought I'd post this obituary here for him to see it, if there is a family connection to him and he still is on the mailing list. I don't have his e-mail address any longer. I think the Rock Creek you are talking about is out around Pickett State Park. Or I should say between Jamestown, TN (Fentress Co.) and Pickett State Park. perhaps one of those on the list who live in Fentress County can give you better directions, than I can, but I do know there is a Rock Creek in Fentress Co., TN. Wilma
There is a Rock Creek, TN located on HWY 19 Just south of Johnson City, TN. I think that's Unicoi County, near the Cherokee National Forrest. Here's a site that also mentions it: http://www.flagpond.com/waterfalls/rock_creek_falls/rock_creek_falls.htm Tonya Nudgenub@aol.com wrote: >Has anyone ever heard of Rock Creek, Tn? Hi List As most of you know my LEMUEL DELK was sent to prison for helping kill MARTIN OWENS. I am trying to find out IF his wife divorced him between 1900-1910. In the two census years PERMELIA DELK, Lemuel's wife was listed as divorced in one census and widow in the other..yet both were living and living seperate. Does Fentress Co have divorce records at the courthouse ? If anyone has access to Divorce records could you look Lemuel & Permelia. I have looked at some that were listed in the paper but they weren't there. maybe she just left him and assumed she was divorced and that he was dead (G) Milly WARD Piros My Mind is Like Lightning.... Alexander may also have had a brother named Preston. Alexander Huff was killed by Champ Ferguson 2 or 18 May 1862 at the old Conrad Pile place where Jefferson Pile was living. Preston Huff testified at Champ's trial, even though he was not there at the time of his father's death. Preston Huff was part of Eli Hatfield's independent (Union) company and was later part of Tinker Dave Beaty's group. Preston's sister, Lucinda, widow of Eli Hatfield, also testified about her father's death at Champ's trial. A Mrs. Nancy Brooks also testified at the trial. I hope you do not mind me answering for you Milly, Mary's maiden name was Brooks. She was daughter of William S. "Will" Brooks born in Michigan abt 1832/1836; and was killed/lynched by a mob 18 Sep 1867 in Tennessee and his wife Nancy H. Pile born 14 Dec. 1835 in Pall Mall, TN and died 7 April 1919 in Tennessee; Nancy is buried in Wolf River Cemetery, Pall Mall, TN. I have the Pile/Pyle line traced back a few more generations but her father is the brick wall on the Brooks line. Bruce York's website adds: William Brooks was accused of the Preston Huff murder. He was tried by a mob that broke into the jail in Jamestown and killed him September 20, 1867. They tied him to a horse's tail and filled his body full of bullets as it was dragged up and down the road. His body was left at a barn across the road from the Elijah Pile home, where his wife and child were staying. Note: It has been reported that William Brooks was born in Michigan, but could be the son of Moses Brooks. Moses Brooks had a son,William Brooks, age 11, born about 1838-1839 in Tennessee. More info on Mary Brooks by by Lorene Cargile Mary was a hard working Christian woman who tried to raise her children to be honest God-fearing people. She worked hard to raise her children after their father's death. Mary was blind in the later part of her life and the only thing I remember about her is that she would feel of us grandchildren when we visited her to see if we had grown any. She is buried in the Wolf River Cemetery beside her husband. All of Mary and William's deceased children are buried in the Wolf River Cemetery except Hattie Wright, who is buried about a mile around the road in the Upchurch Cemetery. Does anyone know if the Preston "Press" Huff who was allegedly killed by William Brooks was the son of Alexander b. ca 1809 & Martha Huff b. 1819? Was his wife Mary Elizabeth Pile 1864-1932? thanks, Fabian Doles <http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bruceyork&id=I9353> HelenD1939@aol.com schrieb: > Millie, can you tell me the maiden name of Mrs. Mary York? I did too, Helen. I have a letter she wrote me many years ago. She also sent me the funeral home card. She was a friendly and gracious lady. Gracie's parents were FRANCES ASHBURY WILLIAMS & MARY ALICE PILE. Milly WARD Piros My Mind is Like Lightning.... One Brilliant Flash and It's Gone.......
