Hello, Someone wrote to me asking me to send them my information on the Conatser family, and I accidentally deleted the e-mail, so if it was someone on this list, please write to me again and put CONATSER in the subject line, so that I can answer it. Thanks, Charlotte Miller

Does Fentress County have a marriage record book for the mid to late 1800 marriages for the FITE families of Fentress Co? What years are the earliest marriage that you can find in Jamestown Courthouse? Thanks in advance BJ
Does anyone happen to have any information on Celroin Choate?
Jenny, No one seems to know who Geo. W. Smith's parents or siblings were. As far as I know, there were no Samuels or Henrys among his descendants. I know it was common practice to name children after older relatives. Have you checked out this website: RootsWeb'sWorldConnectProject: York's Fentress County, Tennessee? He has quite a large data base of folks from Fentress Co. The Lady Ann Gunter that I asked you about was b. 1863 and d. 1882, according to the stone in the Garrett Cem. If she is the daughter of Geo. W. & Juda (Garrett) Smith, she would have been the younger sister of Margaret, which I believe her to be and I believe Margaret named Lady Ann b. 1892 after Lady Ann, b. 1863. My original information about Geo. W. & Juda's children & spouses came from my mother, Reba Hester (Beaty) Beaty. This is her ancestry: Reba Hester (Beaty) Beaty, Sarah Jane (Smith) Beaty, James Franklin Smith, Geo. W. Smith. Mother said Geo. W. & Juda's children were: John "John Booher" m. Sarah Booher; Abraham m. Elizabeth Hicks: Eliga m. Mary Howard; Margaret m. Bill Gunter; James Franklin m. Lucinda Angeline Matthews; and Judy Ann m. Jim Gunter. (I believe Mother had the name wrong on the youngest girl. I think she was Lady Ann.) In the James Franklin Smith Family Bible there are these notations regarding a Lady Ann Gunter: 1. Juda A. Gunter, daughter of JAMES & LADY ANN GUNTER b. Jan. 17, 1881. (The birthdate on the stone of Judia Ann Choate is Jan. 17, 1882.) 2. Under "Deaths": 1881 LADY ANN GUNTER. (On the stone of Lady Ann Gunter the death date is Feb. 23, 1882.) These stones are modern ones and easy to read. It could be that the person providing the information was off by one year on dates, which were long ago. Census for Geo. W. & Juda's family: 1850 1860 1870 1880 Geo. W. I believe it should be F. as his middle name was Franklin. I believe Rodia and Lady Ann to be the same person. The name Lady Ann is a familiar one to the Smith family and no one ever heard of Rodia. The name Rodia is not in the James Franklin Family Bible. Perhaps Lady Ann was a nickname that eventually became her given name. It is interesting that in the 1870 census there is a James Gunter who lived two household away from the George Smith family. Hi all, Is Jonathan also known as James M.? Or were there two Allen sons that adopted the name Voiles? notes: Was son of Steve Allen, but went by name of Voiles. Allardt Gazette: "Armathwaite Jan 9 -- Mr. James M. Allen of Carmi, Ill, is visiting friends here. He is the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Voils of Robbins, by another husband. She formerly resided here. He left here in 1853, and was a soldier in the late war. He talks of moving here in the spring. 12 Jan 1893. Hi, Fabian, Jonathan Allen "Voiles" was indeed the son of Elizabeth Goddard and Steve Allen. I don't know what happened to Mr. Allen but William Voiles and wife, Elizabeth Goddard Allen Voiles, raised him and siblings, along with the children from their marriage. I don't believe that he was known as James M. I have his CW pension file and information from members of that Voiles family, in addition to other research. "Allardt Gazette: "Armathwaite Jan 9 -- Mr. James M. Allen of Carmi, Ill, is visiting friends here. He is the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Voils of Robbins, by another husband. She formerly resided here. He left here in 1853, and was a soldier in the late war. He talks of moving here in the spring. 12 Jan 1893." As for James M. Allen, several of us Voiles researchers had wondered if he might be the James Voiles listed as husband of Alvana Auterson in the 1850 (or 1860?) Overton Co., TN census. We never knew what happened to this James but Alvana turned up later in the 1870 Clinton Co., Ky census with no James. Does anyone know the answer to the question of whether James Voiles who was enumerated with wife Alvana in 1860 census is the same as the James Allen from Carmi, Illinois who visited his mother in 1893? Helen
No I do not know what unit he served in. As to Lady Ann she was the dau of William M. Gunter & Margaret Smith the dau of George & Judith (Garrett) Smith & married Alonzo Parson Beaty. She was born 10-6-1892 & d 4-9-1976 & is buried in the Beaty Cem., Overton Vo., Tn. I did not show a James Franklin Smith as Geo & Judith's child. What info do you have for him. Ron, Thanks for the info. Do you know what company or unit he served with in the Civil War? Do you have a Garrett ancestor related to Juda Garrett, mother of John? In the Garrett cemetery there are two graves in the same row as my GG-grandfather, James Franklin Smith, son of Geo. W. & Juda. On one stone it says Lady Ann Gunter, June, 1863 Feb. 23, 1882. On the other it says Judia Ann Choate, Jan. 17, 1882 May 19, 1915, Loving Wife of A. J. Choate. I believe Lady Ann Gunter to be the youngest daughter of Geo. Brenda, The soldier I'm trying to locate is John Allen "John Booher" Smith, son of Geo. W. & Juda (Garrett) Smith. I've tried doing what you suggested on the CWSSS website. There are SO MANY John Smiths, and no home addresses are given that I could find. I've even gone down to NARA in DC & waded through John Smiths down there and haven't found him yet. Here is a good website with a little background on the Conatser/Kanatzer name..............bev _http://www.geocities.com/kanatzar1738/_ (http://www.geocities.com/kanatzar1738/)
Hi Helen, I'm not sure where he is buried. I did a search on www.findagrave.com and didn't come up with his name, but that doesn't mean he's not there. There are two other cemeteries near there, the Camp Nelson Cemetery and the Camp Nelson National Cemetery. These could be the same cemetery, I don't know. Tonya Somewhere, Tonya, I read that Jonathan Voiles is buried at the Camp Nelson Cemetery, I believe it was, and I just get it confused with the other cemeteries. Sorry about that. Helen
Gerri, you might want to go to the following website (Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System) and put in the person's name. Once you find the person, it will show their regiment. If you then click on the regiment, there is usually a bit of information about the regiment, and a listing for all soldiers in that particular unit. _http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html_ (http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html) I have a subscription to ancestry.com, which has additional information on Civil War soldiers in their databases. If you will e-mail the name of the person you are looking for information on, I can look up information for you there too.
