    3. Concerning our conversation about stilts and "Tom Walkers" you might want to take a look at the site below. I guess the term is used in a lot of places. But it was new to me. Also now we know Arkansas is not that wierd. 3. Hi Ernie, Yes, I agree. No one has ever had more fun than we did, playing hop scotch with my cousins at my grandparents' house on a Sunday afternoon, romping through the woods with my brothers and neighbor friends, or playing ball using a walnut wrapped in an old sock and a fence slat or other board for a bat. How can you top spelunking the local caves using tar paper for a light, or possum hunting on a brisk full moon in November? 3. While this is not about that I would like to know if anyone on the list knows if any where one could find social events that occured in Jamestown in the mid 30's to mid 40's. I am really guessing about the dates. I would like to find information about a place we always called "The Big Rock". It is in the woods behind the house where my aunt lived from sometime in the 30's until her death in March 2006. I played in that woods, so did my son and daughter and grandaughters. My aunt use to tell of times in the past when social events were held there. As none of us has cleaned the rock in the last few years it is probably about covered with debris that collects as the trees loose their leaves and etc. I know there was a natural spring there and it was where laundry was done or water carried from for whatever was needed. Have any of you ever heard of such a place? Marilyne On 11/14/06, MPiros1120@aol.com <MPiros1120@aol.com> wrote: > > When we lived in Devonia I must have been about 7 years old. 3. Milly, You have a beautiful site. And I joined the Memory Lane site. I, like you love those memories, and old stories. Some may be old, but I can close my eyes and they feel like today. So many I carry in my heart daily of years together with family, of recent treasures found...that one can never forget, and that special chance of meeting someone who opened all the doors and answered all the questions and eased the heart. Yes, I love hearing the memories, they have opened alot of doors for me. Very blessed doors. 3. It is a busy list but the topics are a lot of the things we Tennessee born remember. The Texas and Georgia crowd get a little carried away at times. It is surprising but I have made contact with several from our area of TN on that list. Just recently we had an ongoing conversation concerning yellow or white cornmeal. It is amazing what we remember from our youth with a little prompting. 3. Milly, Your website is fantastic. The graphics are wonderful. The Hummingbirds transported me back to sitting on Aunt Lenore's porch. She always had scores of them flying around her hanging plants. Do you have the poem concerning Grandma and the Family Tree in a form where you could forward it to me. I would like to send it to my two children. They have given up on me to the point my son was willing to buy me the New Legacy Program for Christmas. Since I am not getting a new computer yet; now he is getting me a new antenna for my TV and installing it. 3. Don, So far I have two replies from my question on Memory Lane concerning stilts and "Tom Walkers" One from a man who lived in Arkansas as a child and he said it did ring a bell but thought he had always known them as stilts. Another from a girl who grew up in Georgia and had always known them as "Tom Walkers". She described her father making them for his children. I guess there are other "wierd" places. 3. Ahhh! Such pleasant memories for me, Milly. I've made those stilts, and walked on cans. After we moved to a house on the "Big Pike" (Highway 28), we would stomp on the side of beer cans we found along the road, and the cans would stick to our feet. We then used them to "skate" (slide) on the pavement. Another favorite pastime was making a "click 'n' wheel" which we pushed around a lot for fun. The click was a piece of bailing wire about 3 feet long with a little cup bent in the lower end and it was folded for strength where we held it. We used the "click" to push a small iron wheel (the band off a wagon wheel hub). It's so sad that the modern generation has to have the latest edition of gameboy or the fanciest playstation, and it becomes their entertainment and their social life. No wonder we have problems with children relating to each other and to their parents, grandparents, and teachers.
