I am having a bit of a problem with Robert's Civil war service. Can anyone help me? 1860 census Dickson Co, page 275b hh1056/1056 R. A. Duke 19 farmer M. A. Duke 18 Robert married Martha Ann Johnson (I do not have that date). Martha gave birth to a son, Robert Allen, Jr, November 2, 1861. "Family Legend" has it that she died in childbirth and Robert was so broken up he joined the confederate army November 26, 1861. Here is where the problem starts - Martha and Robert Allen, Sr, are buried in the Johnson Family Cemetery, Cheatham County, and her death date is given as September 11, 1863. There is obviously a problem with her date of death. Robert Allen Sr became a doctor and remarried. His widow applied for a pension in the 1920s but was denied since Robert had served only a short time when he caught the measles and (according to the affadavits in the pension application) "they went in on him" causing him to be very ill and eventually was plagued by TB, losing one lung completely and the other was badly damaged. His younger brother, Green Wesley Duke, replaced him - the pension was denied since the brother did the service and should get the pension (the brother was killed in a railroad accident while in the army). Robert Jr had several children: 1900 census Dickson Co, TN Duke, Robt A 39 Judith 36 Lilburn 14 (m) Bell 12 Luther 7 Anna 4 Robert A 59 (father to head of household) Ella 48 Mother to head of household - actually step-mother Lillian 15 sister to head of household Would like to contact any descendants - I have considerable information to share.
