    1. [TNDICKSO] Missing wife of James D. Petty (ca 1820-1850)

Author: SharolynWood Surnames: Petty Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.tennessee.counties.dickson/523/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm looking for the family of Jim Petty's wife, which might have lived in Dickson Co, Hickman Co, or Humphreys Co ca 1820 to 1850. With no direct documentation of her name, I'm looking for information another Dickson/ Hickman/ Humphreys Co family might have. Seeking probate record. The Petty family appears in Hickman Co and Dickson Co records. So the marriage could have been in Hickman Co. and cousins lived in Humphreys Co. I wonder if any Hickman /Humphreys Co family has any probate records that show a married daughter with the married name Petty or any grandchildren which include W.C. "Bill" Petty or Elizabeth "Bettie" (Petty) Hedge. [Bill married Susan Deshazer from Hickman Co. Bettie married into the Hedge family who lived in Humphreys Co.] Family moved to TX? Jim Petty was the "head" of an oxen train that moved "seven brothers and cousins and their children & families" to Texas in 1848. I do not know if any of his wife's family would have made that trip. If they did, they probably settled in either Upshur Co TX or Navarro Co TX. James D. Petty b. ca 1797 Union Co SC moved with his family to Dickson Co TN on the Piney River in 1807--just north of Hickman Co line--and Pettys lived on both sides of the border. Jim's wife is a mystery. Some reseachers list her as "Sarah" but I have found no documentation to support any name. [With the help of researchers, Sarah Bramlett Petty, who was probably an Edwards, has been eliminated. This "Sarah" might be the source of the speculation that Jim's wife was named Sarah.] Jim and wife married between the census in 1820 where he was living with his parents Thomas and Jane (Darwin) Petty and 1824 when the oldest child William Carroll Petty was born on the Piney River Petty family farm. There is no record of a marriage in Dickson Co. I cannot find any documentation of his wife's name. She seems to be living at the time of the 1840 census. Here are the census records--leaving even "Mrs. Petty's" age in doubt because of two different census records for 1830 with different ages. The Pettys lived in one place, but census recorded in different counties over the years. 1810 Census Rutherford Co TN Nashville Division (Image 5) PETTY Thomas; wife Jane; 5 children including James D. age 10-15 1820 Census Records Hckman Co TN PETTY Thomas Sr.; wife Jane; 8 children including James D. age 18-26. 1830 Census Dickson Co TN (Images 13 and 45) recorded twice--duplicate census listings-census taken twice (Thomas Petty also): 1st census: 1830 Census Dickson Co TN p. 314 Ancestry Image 13/73 James Petty 1 1 0 0 0 1(30-40) 2 0 0 0 0 1(30-40) 2nd census: 1830 Census Dickson Co TN p. 330 Ancestry Image 45/73 James Petty 020001(30-40) 20001(20-30) 1840 Census Dickson Co James D. Petty Sr 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 1 2 1 0 0 1 I have not located either Jim or a possible wife on any 1850 census. Jim died in 1857 in Navarro Co or Hill Co TX. Any help appreciated.
