    2. The following new message has been posted on Forum at <http://www.tngenweb.org/dickson/webbbs/queries/index.cgi>. *************************************************************************** MESSAGE: (#508) Re: Conclusive Evidence <http://www.tngenweb.org/dickson/webbbs/queries/index.cgi?rev=508> AUTHOR: Russell James DATE: Saturday, 17 July 2004, at 6:47 a.m. Reply To: (#507) Re: Conclusive Evidence Author: DIAN LICKEY Date: Friday, 16 July 2004, at 5:31 p.m. Hello Dian, I'm not a good source for general history in this area but here are some bits and pieces I've picked up in my genealogy research here over the last 2 1/2 years. Before becoming the State of Tennessee the area was part of Tennessee County, North Carolina. For a brief period NC ceeded authority back to the Feds and this area was known as the US Territory South of the River Ohio. Dickson Co. TN was formed in 1803 from Montgomery Co. TN and Humphreys Co. was formed ca. 1809 from Dickson Co. Most of the deed records appear to have survived (including the original NC land grants) and can be found at the archives in Clarksville and/or Charlotte. Montgomery Co. has a couple of tax rolls (1798 & 1800 as I recall) but the early court minutes are missing. The earliest Dickson Co. tax rolls start sometime later but are complete for several years...especially the 1830's. A number of very early court minute books have survived in Dickson Co. Both Counties have good probate/estate records. Neither county has complete marriage records with the early 1800's having been destroyed or lost. I don't know much about Humprheys County but do know there are deed records back to 1810 but I didn't find them well indexed which makes researching them very tedious. Also, the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville probably has everything that is available at the local level. I'm really not familiar with the State Archives. If you are out-of-state, I suspect most of the deed, probate, tax rolls, and court minutes are available through inter-library loan through your local library. If there is a Morman church near you...I've found them to be most helpful in allowing non-Mormans access to their genealogy records which include thousands of microfilm rolls of original records. But...always VERIFY anything you find in their family history records as submitted by members. Lots of good stuff but lots of errors too. I'm not familiar with George Washington HOLLAND but the HOLLAND name is quite common to this area. If I run across G. W. in any of my work, I'll pass it along to you via this forum. Many of the early settlers in this area acquired land grants for their service in the Revolutionary War or they bought the warrents given to other veterans who had no interest in moving to the frontier. Many North Carolinians were land speculators and acquired large tracts of land in this area but some of them never came here. I haven't come across evidence of the Cherokees being common to this area. I see more about the Chickasaws. As I said I'm not a local historian and someone will know better than me. I'm curious...do you have proof of the Indian heritage or does it come from family traditions? I had one Indian "princess" story from my father. I did find a Pocahannas JAMES but she turned out to be as Anlgo-Saxon as the rest of my crew! Also my grandmother used say I was 1/8th Indian and a 7th cousin to Jesse JAMES (or something like that) neither of which has proven to be true. I'm always interested in finding sources of proof. I don't even know if the states would allow legal interracial marriages in those early days although I'm quite certain common law unions did occur. Best regards. I hope I've given you some clues of what to look for and where. Russ James of Houston Co.
