The following new message has been posted on Forum at <http://www.tngenweb.org/dickson/webbbs/queries/index.cgi>. *************************************************************************** MESSAGE: (#502) Conclusive Evidence <http://www.tngenweb.org/dickson/webbbs/queries/index.cgi?rev=502> AUTHOR: Russell James DATE: Monday, 12 July 2004, at 5:34 a.m. Reply To: (#493) DICKSON Family/County Bombshell..more Author: Russell James Date: Friday, 25 June 2004, at 9:03 a.m. My theory is proven INCORRECT regarding the father of Dr. William DICKSON of Davidson Co. TN from whom Dickson Co. gets its name. His father was, in fact, Col. William DICKSON of Duplin Co. NC. There must be two William DICKSONs in Davidson Co. at approximately the same time (ca. 1800-1820) Proof: From an abstract of the Will of Col. William DICKSON probated in Duplin Co. NC ca. 1820 we see the names of three granddaughters. Col. William DICKSON names the three daughters of his son William DICKSON as being Cornelia Ann, Indiana & Florida. From a copy of the Will of William DICKSON of Davidson Co. TN written August, 1815 and recorded May, 1816, we see the names of his three children...all daughters. They were Cornelia Ann DICKSON, Sarah Indiana DICKSON and Mary Florida DICKSON. His wife's name was Polly B. DICKSON. This is almost certainly the Dr. William DICKSON who was a congressman from Davidson Co. TN. His Will suggests considerable wealth including a number of slaves, his plantation in Davidson Co., stock in two banks and tracts of land in (1) Rockingham, VA, (2) Mayfield Station, Wiliamson Co. TN, (3) on the waters of the Obeds & Roaring Rivers, and (4) on the waters of the Alabama or Tombigbee Rivers. The executors were his wife, & friends Edward WARD, William C. WARD and Benjamin B. JONES. Witnesses were William HART, Hansel HARVEY, & Clement HALL. So...the William DICKSON, Jr. who was given land on Jones Creek recorded in Dickson Co by his father James DICKSON of Duplin Co. NC is NOT Dr. William DICKSON the congressman but more likely cousins with the same name living in Davidson Co., TN at the same time. The Junior designation was probably used to note the younger of the two. So far, I've found nothing to indicate Dr. William DICKSON actually ever owned land in Dickson Co. Oh well....theories come and go! Russ James of Houston Co. TN p.s. I'm still in search of the parents of Dry Branch Hugh DICKSON (not the son of Joseph whose will names a son Hugh in 1803), Raccoon Creek John DICKSON and Bear Creek James DICKSON. Would love to have some other DICKSON family researchers join me in the search. *************************************************************************** This is an automatically-generated notice.
