Hi all, my name is Pat McRae, and I live in Jeffersonville, IN, which is right across the Ohio River from Louisville, KY. I was raised in Chattanooga, TN . I have been involved in genealogy for about 3 years, and have met a lot of lost cousins. The lines I am researching in the Dickson area are the HALL's & FUSSELL's. I had spent 2 years searching for the HALL's in the Hamilton Co. area, because I knew my ggrandmother and a nephew were living there at the beginning of the 20th century. I guess you have had the experience of searching for a surname in the census, and obituaries, like Smith, Jones, Hall, Thompson, and etc. It is a nightmare. I searched for the HALL's in Hamilton Co. records and could find nothing. A cousin in Calif. sent me information from the 1860 census, and next to one of the siblings names was a note of Dickson Co. That was truely a blessing, because I visited the Dickson Site, and posted a message to all that were searching the same names, and I have been flooded with information from Suzanne, and Ben. Suzanne has been researching for about 15 years, and Ben, I am not sure how long. When I found them, the Good Lord, must have thought I had paid my dues, and deserved a break. You all are a warm and friendly group, and the best genealogy group that I have signed onto as a member. I plan to visit Dickson, for the first time this fall, and am really looking forward to the trip. Lola, I noticed you are tracking the Martin line. By some chance would you happen to know anything about a ???? Martin that married a Gwendolyn Balthrop in Davidson County, ca 1925. Gwendolyn (born 8/22/1902, died June 22, 1902) was daughter of Robert Albert Balthrop and Maggie Winters Balthrop. She died in California, and I suspect her spouse also died there, but I have no way to check for this. I don't have any record of children. Long shot, but I thought I'd make a stab. Also, do you have any info on a Lawrence Omer Martin (b. 10/17/1919, d. 4/17/2000 in Madison County, KY). He married Marian Frances McClurkan (b.12/27/1919, may still be living). They married in May 1947, probably in KY. Another long shot. Karen, As you probably know, Stan (Yelowstone) is my brother. Our grandfather was Willie Wayne Walker, son of James Joshua, son of Joshua, and possibly the son of John (I haven't documented Joshua's father's name). "Ol' Josh" was born in 1833 and married Judith Rorie in Stewart Co. in 1853. I stopped working on this line with "Ol' Josh" and things Granddaddy told me. It's my understanding that Stan has much more information on the Walker line and might be able to help you with it. The Fitzgerald family is my husband's line. His g-grandfather was James Columbus "Lum" Fitzgerald and is a brick wall for me. I don't have that information in front of me right now---it's in the box of things I've moved for the time being---but Lum and Francis Pressley Fitzgerald moved to Stewart County in the early 1900s from Clay County, TN. There were a lot of Fitzgeralds in Clay, Jackson, and Overton Counties in TN and in Monroe Co. KY but I've not been able to connect Lum to any of them. I've shared photos of him with other Fitzgerald researchers and they say they see a family resemblance but none of us have been able to find his name on any documents. One story is that Francis or her mother worked for the Hull family and baby-sat Cordell Hull. After Francis married Lum, they continued to live on the Hull family farm with Mrs. Hull (Cordell's mother) until they moved to Stewart Co. (There might be some truth to the story because my father-in-law's middle name was Cordell and it doesn't show up in his Ellis line anywhere.) Wish I could be of more help to you--but I wonder if your Jesse Walker and my John Walker might be brothers! Sandy Ellis
My name is Mary Becraft and I live in Florida. My great grandparents and gret greats started in Williamson County by meandered down into Dickson and the greats and my grandparents are buried there. Searching for BRIGGS<BROWN,GRIMMITT, WRIGHT
Sandy, What Walkers are you researching? My brick wall is Jesse Walker who married Caroline Fitsgerald/Fitzgerald. I found them on the 1850/60 Humphrey's county census but nothing before or after that. I do know he was born in Tennessee but I'm not sure of the year. According to his ages listed on each census he was either born in 1820 or 1812. I'm hoping these names will ring a bell with someone. Karen Beasley
Hello...My name is Lola Jenkins...The surnames I am researching are: Reynolds, Underwoods, Baggetts, Martins and connecting lines.... Welcome to all of the newbies on the List. Lola
My name is Faye Wilson Keele. My husband and I live on a farm in the middle of Yellow Creek in Dickson County. The same farm my Mother and Father and my grand mother and grand father and ggrand parents started on. My ggrand parents James Porter Wilson and Elizabeth Ann Adams bought the land from the Hunt brothers. I am researching the Wilsons, Adams, Turners, Choates, Brazzells, Austins and Seals. On my husband's side the Keele, Skeltons, Webbs, Wrenns, Adams, Littletons, McIntire/McIntyre, Hamiltons. Welcome to all of the newbies on the List. Oh! also a very happy birthday, Mollie. Hey Y'all, I'm just Mel and I was born in Dickson a few years back <VBG>, but I now reside in north Alabama. My husband and I just moved to the country and we enjoy the peace and quiet in our little community. Like Cousin Cher, I had a little dog that was my baby for 19 years. Biff is now at peace in a special spot in our flower garden. He can never be replaced, but a new puppy will come along one day soon. If any of you know someone that breeds long haired Chihuahuas, please contact me offline. Anyway, I am just a slow starter on this geneaology business and feel like all of you on this list are wonderful people. I'm researching HOOPER, CLIMER, MCCLELLAND, DONALDSON, WOODARD, BRUCE (to start) and just got some great info from Nettye on my WHITE line. One day soon, when I quit volunteering, I'm going to really dig into this stuff so watch out! Mel __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi everyone! My name is Sandy and I was go glad to turn on the computer and see that everyone is sharing this morning! I'm just a few miles up the road from Dickson in Clarksville (Montgomery County). I don't know when I started working on genealogy because I used to spend more time with the grown-ups than with the kids. I loved the stories and was always full of questions. By 1980, I had a lot of names/dates/places and realized that I needed to document some of the information. I was lucky enough to have met people like Eileen Baggett and Maloye Bragg who had been working on the Baggett family for years. They took me under their wings and taught me a lot of things--I'll always be indebted to those wonderful ladies! I also spent a lot of time talking to the former "official" historian of Montgomery County, Ursula Beach. I was "tickled to death" when I learned that Mrs. Ursula actually knew my g-granddaddy! I had to pack my "stuff" away for a few years. I sure hated to but family and work was more important at the time. I never forgot about it and kept adding notes, knowing that I'd someday get time to work on it again. Now, I'm semi-retired---I work as few hours as possible keeping books for a local landscaper/nursery. I'm seriously considering turning in my resignation so I can spend some time doing things I enjoy---genealogy is 1st on that list! The names I'm working on in this area are ELLIS, BAGGETT, HODGES, BARTEE, HARKLEROAD, HAYES, WALKER, SHEPPARD, SHEPHERD, GRAHAM, FITZGERALD, NASH---I could go on but these are plenty! I'll be happy to share what information I have---and I'm still adding "notes from the past". Yes, I'm still working on the computer room (got side-tracked again!) and I found another box of notes that I haven't added to my files yet! (And the cat hasn't brought in any more birds or rabbits so maybe she's learning!) Sandy Ellis
Faye, I think my Haddens and Nesbitts may have lived in Yellow Creek in Dickson Co. in 1820. Would you mind telling a little about what the area looks like? I would love to see a description of it. Thanks, Dot
Caroline did you respond to the earlier letter on the Gilmores' that might be into our lines???? Lenora
Hi Lenora, I am always glad to share information about my Mitchells. Of our "brick walls" two different Mitchell lines are two of them. However they didn't live in Dickson Co. TN as far as I know. From Warren Co. TN >> TX Allen Mitchell, b. Nov 12, 1793, NC, d. Apr 11, 1889, buried Eagle Springs Cem. Coryell Co. TX. Sarah _____ (his wife) b. Feb 22, 1804, TN, md. maybe bet. 1832-1833 (burned courthouse--no marriage record) d. Nov 11, 1887, buried next to Allen. Children: Daniel M. b. Abt 1834, TN (probably Warren Co.) died aft 1870, md. Margaret Mary Beal (we think) bef. 1856, MO--maybe Dade Co. or ?? Can't find him after 1870. Doctor James (his name) b. Nov 28, 1835. His Civil War pension file says he was born in McMinn Co. TN. I suspect in his old age he got McMinnville and McMinn Co. TN mixed up. Can't be sure. Died June 18, 1924, Round Rock, Williamson Co. TX. Lydia L. Parker, his wife, Feb 17, 1830, IL, md. Dec 25, 1856, Washington Co. IL, d. May 17, 1906, buried beside Dock. Nicholas, b. March 20, 1840, TN (Warren Co.?) d. between 1880 & 1882, probably Cherokee Co. KS. Avarilla C. Beal, (his wife) b. Dec 28, 1845, Dade Co. MO, md. bet. 1860-1861 ? (Dade or Webster Co. MO?) d. Apr 2, 1910, Republic, Greene Co. MO. Richard, b. abt. 1842, TN (Warren Co.?) d. aft 1860. Cannot find again after the 1860 census Dade Co. MO. Mary Ann "Polly", b. abt. 1844 TN (Warren Co.?) d. aft 1860. Cannot find after the 1860 census Dade Co. MO. Amanda Adaline, b. Sep 25, 1846, Warren Co. TN, d. Oct 12, 1935, Purcell, McClain Co. OK. Samuel Shook Mitchell, (her husband) b. Aug 12, 1844, Wayne Co. IL, md. Sept 1, 1864, Washington Co. IL. Died March 30, 1914, Montgomery Co. MO. They lived most of their married years in Montgomery Co. MO. The last two above are my maternal great grandparents. Allen & Sarah Mitchell were in Warren Co. TN in 1850. Hard to tell for sure how long they were there because the pre 1850 censuses don't quite match the right ages, etc. Also there was more than one Allen Mitchell in TN pre 1850. They left Warren Co. after the 1850 census and went with other Mitchells (can't prove a relationship) to Dade Co. MO. There by 1860. The 1865 Illinois state census shows them in Washington Co. TN, along with sons of the other Mitchells who came from TN. After 1865, we can't find Allen & Sarah again until 1876 on the MO State census in Montgomery Co. with Samuel and Amanda. Where they were in 1870 and 1880 is a big mystery. We have searched the Mitchells in several "logical" states and cannot find them in IL, MO, TX, AR. The other Mitchell family (Samuel's) came from IL, as far as we can tell. Samuel's father, Solomon Mitchell was born in IL 1814, and we don't know who his father, mother or siblings were---another "brick wall". As far as Mitchells in TX, both Allen & Sarah and at least son Dock and his wife moved there, but also some of the descendants of the "other" Mitchells from Warren Co. TN also went there. So did some of the MO Mitchells. They were in Bell, Bartlett, Comanche Coryell, Travis, Williamson and who knows where else. I was born in Parker Co. TX and am a Mitchell. My mother was a Hadden and born in Hunt Co. TX in 1903. Then they moved back to Parker Co. My Shelton ancestor is Letitia "Letty" (Shelton) Duncan, b. abt. 1782, VA or KY? Married Charles Duncan Aug 21, 1797, Lincoln Co. KY. Then moved to Lincoln Co. TN. He died 1815, in the War of 1812, leaving Letty with 10 children. She is on the 1820 census Lincoln Co. TN. Letty moved with most of her 10 children to Marion Co. IL by about 1823 and died there abt. 1846. These Sheltons and Duncans married lots of Luttrells and Easleys. If anything clicks, please let me know. Dot
Hello Dot... I would be very interested in your Mitchells... My line is from Tennesse to Texas also....started in TN about 1838 as far as I know and went to Hunt county Texas around 1870.. tho other Mitchells stayed in TN.. mostly around Dickson. I have always been curious about the Sheltons... I saw them on the Census so many times next door or very near the Mitchells.... Please send what you have on Mitchells in Tn and Texas and lets see if we are "new" relatives! found I was cousin to about four others on this web site. My line. so far starts with William w. Mitchell and wife Arabella... first in 1838 in Humphrey county tax list but by 1840 were in Dickson...William died a Prisoner in Confederate Prison..Arabella died somewhere in Houston county... most of the family stayed in Dickson and married there.....most of the Mitchell girls remained in and around Dickson.....grandfather William Robert Mitchell moved to Hunt county Texas.............anything familiar here? Lenora You can send to me direct if you prefer to do so instead of thru this site.

Hello! My name is Caroline, I have been on the list for a couple of years or so and must say it's my "cyber home"!! I was born and raised just outside of Memphis. My husband's family have resided many generations in Dickson County. I started researching my own families history in 1986. After we moved to Middle Tennessee and were walking the streets and gardening the land where my husband's family had done so for many generations, ( now this pains me to admit it!) I became more interested in researching his family than mine because we are here on part of the old homeplace and I got caught up in the history of where we are. Most all of my hobbies have to do with "old" stuff (as my kids often tell me) , genealogy is my favorite hobby, but I also like to look for arrowheads, garden a little, watch hummingbirds in the spring and summer out my kitchen window (counted six this morning) and scan the local antique malls for "treasures". My next career could easily be "Flea Market Lady" . The Main Dickson County surnames that I am searching are---- Milam,Waynick, Gilmore,Lewis,Bone Hope you all have a great day! Caroline
Nettye James lived in Macon or Smith County, Tennessee. He was buried in Smith County. Brenda

Billy, This is Mollie again.. I forgot that I have a copy of Dickson County, Tenessee Handbook.. I found alot of entries for John Jones.. I am not sure if any of them are yours but ... One is a John R Jones who married Rebecca Russell 19, Feb 1838.... A John Jones to Eliza Whatley Licensed issued 29, June, 1846.. A will for Rueben Jones Wife Esther , five children John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Nancy, Sealum and the child his wife was pregnant with.. Signed 24, Jan 1815 This next one I am almost positive may be yours.. John Jones Will - page 96 NO. 55.. Gives to Thomas Jefferson Jones, John Jones Jr., William Jones, James Madison Jones .... wife Jane Signed 23 April 1832... William Dickson of Davidson Co. sold to John Jones property on Yallow Creek May 22, 1804.. John Jones of Montgomery Co sells to George Teal Sr. 25, Oct. 1805.. Then a reference to someone selling a negro girl.. John Jones is a witness and I think one of the people selling as well... Then a piece of property was sold that was connected to John Jones property.. Then Captain Cuthbert Hudson's Company.. There was a John Jones that was a private.. Then a listing for miscellaneous soldiers for the war of 1812... A John Jones was listed... Don't know if any of this will hope but I hope it does....
