I am having a bit of a problem with Robert's Civil war service. Can anyone help me? 1860 census Dickson Co, page 275b hh1056/1056 R. A. Duke 19 farmer M. A. Duke 18 Robert married Martha Ann Johnson (I do not have that date). Martha gave birth to a son, Robert Allen, Jr, November 2, 1861. "Family Legend" has it that she died in childbirth and Robert was so broken up he joined the confederate army November 26, 1861. Here is where the problem starts - Martha and Robert Allen, Sr, are buried in the Johnson Family Cemetery, Cheatham County, and her death date is given as September 11, 1863. There is obviously a problem with her date of death. Robert Allen Sr became a doctor and remarried. His widow applied for a pension in the 1920s but was denied since Robert had served only a short time when he caught the measles and (according to the affadavits in the pension application) "they went in on him" causing him to be very ill and eventually was plagued by TB, losing one lung completely and the other was badly damaged. His younger brother, Green Wesley Duke, replaced him - the pension was denied since the brother did the service and should get the pension (the brother was killed in a railroad accident while in the army). Robert Jr had several children: 1900 census Dickson Co, TN Duke, Robt A 39 Judith 36 Lilburn 14 (m) Bell 12 Luther 7 Anna 4 Robert A 59 (father to head of household) Ella 48 Mother to head of household - actually step-mother Lillian 15 sister to head of household Would like to contact any descendants - I have considerable information to share. I've hit a brick wall and hoping someone may have a clue they don;t know about. John Galloway m. Sarh (Sally) Barnett some of their children were; 1) Parilee Galloway (b.1825) m. William Hall in 1841. By this marriage she had James, Arrinetta, & Richard. on the 1850 census however she must have been a widow. This is the last time I find not only her, but John and Sarah as well. John was 64 and Sarah 59. On the 1860 census, I can find no "Hall" children in TN whose ages would match those of hers (assuming she remarried, the 1860 census list with an astrick those who live in a household by a differnet name) So my guess is she moved. I also think that perhaps John and Sarah either one had died yet and moved with her. I've check known locations of other siblings, but can find no leads. Nor can I find anything that would indicate that John and Sarah died in Dickson Co. 2)James Galloway b.1812 and married Louisa Andrews in 1834. after 1840 they removed to Il. I have some deeds were-by James recieved as the assignee of a Walter Barnett some land in Dickson Co. On the deeds it specifically states that this land bordered among others 50 acres of Walter Barnett. I can not find any other mention of a Walter Barnett in Dickson Co, other than this (ie..no census etc) one of these bondsmen was Terrell Andrews, but can find no info on him 3)Jackson Galloway (b.1823) married Anna ? (b.1830 KY) I can not find any marraige records of them. and Dickson co, has better than descent records of early marraiges. Now of course he could have left and married her in KY before moving back to Hickman Co in 1850, because he apparently was not at home on the 8140 census. Now the interesting thing here is, thier son James Richard Galloway, (who is my gggrandfather) had a son William Jasper (my greatgrand) he died in 1919 and as mothers surname - James Richard put "Hamilton" on the death certificate, it should have been Henderson (his wifes surname) but I think he either forgot his wifes maiden name or put his mother maiden name ? Also interesting is on the 1850 census in IL. Jackson's older brother James (above) had a border living with him whose last name was "Hamilton", he was from Indiana however. Other surnames that married in are; Parnell, Ryan thanks michaelb > ==== TNDICKSO Mailing List ==== > http://www.rootsweb.com/~tndickso/index.htm > I am my own double first cousin! I am a quilter and I tell you that the best way to store quilts is in a COTTON pillow case if you have one or wrapped in l00% cotton cloth--no plastic--no sealing--no dry cleaning. If you think they need washing try a corner to see if the colors are color fast. Quilters these day wash their material before they ever go in a quilt. If you don't use them often take them out once a year or so and refol d them. Good luck. Mary
thanks everyone.. my computer just crashed and we area trying to get materials out.. so if you can't reach me on family stuff and need to it is: Lenora Anderson 777 Gregory Lane Oceanside CA. 92057 Sandy Ellis has my telephone number if you need it.
Karen, Smart lady, thank you very much! Joyce
Could anyone tell me the best way to wash old quilts? I have quilts that both my grandmothers made and I sure don't want to ruin them. And, are there any special tricks in storing them? Thanks to all! Joyce in MI
Joyce, I don't know a thing about washing and storing old quilts but I bet if you find a place that washes and stores wedding gowns they could tell you. Hi Joyce, I would suggest going to the library and looking for books regarding antique and vintage quilts and their care or quilt conservation and care. I know Barbar Brackman has written one book, but that was several years ago. There are several products out like Orvus, which is mild and I use it on quilts. I have been collecting quilting for about twenty years and have two old quilting from the family. Most suggest washing quilts in the bath tub and using a fine screen to help hold the weight of the quilt. Testing fabrics before hand for color fastness with a cotton swab helps too know what your are dealing with. In my experience, the old feed sacks and the thirties prints hold their color well. Using Google search engine and keywords antique quilt washing gives several good sites. If you have a local museum which has textiles, they might also have al recommendation. Looking for any descendants of Elias Newton Cathey or Joshua C. Cathey. Todd Cathey
just thinking back about storing them, my greatgrandmother and grandmothers and my mom, all kept their quilts in a cedar chest that had moth balls in them. as for washing, I would think dry cleaning, that would certainly have to be the best way to keep from hurting them? (i think). But if you don;t plan on using them, perhaps one of those valcum sealed displays like ya put a wedding dress in. let us know what you find out. michaelb --- Joenash82@aol.com wrote: > Could anyone tell me the best way to wash old > quilts? Regards the Missisippi River.. I think maybe Jeremiah V. Mitchell stayed in Hardin area after the war as his family was gone and it was easiest... besides the fact that he had a bad ankle from the war and other health problems....that is probably where he was mustered out....his father died in Rock Island Confederate Prison which was near the site of major battles in the war and where Confederates were sent in a makeshift prison as the other monstrosity prisons were full.....
