Does anyone know what Arabella Mitchells maiden name is?
Hello.. I am from the MItchell, Hays .Clymer and other Dickson surnames... They were aall great grandparents related........I recently recieved a Pension for my grandfathers brother fffffor the Civil War...in it was a letter signed by W. J. Climer,, a family of grandfathers sister through marriage.. but also the signature of W. MCAdoo.........I am interesssted in any connection to the Mitchells....My grandmother Arabella Mitchell had a Deed in which she signed over land to her son William R. Mitchell in earlly 1850's... but we never knew why it also had the name Sarah McAdoo also at the botttom of the Deed,, which we assumed was a Witness signature.. though it did not list this Sarah as Witness... So we wondered if she was a relative of Arabella's and co owned the land in some way....never did find the connection.....and now heere is another connection in the Petition to the Civil War Board with the connection again.. Have you ever heard of any connection between my family and yours? Lenora
Cathy, welcome aboard the Dickson County List. I don't have any McAdoo's but maybe some one else does and can help. Janet L.
Cathy, Welcome to the list! It's one of the BEST!!!! Pam
Hello! My name is Cathy McAdoo Wilheim. I am new to your list and wanted to introduce myself. I search more names than I can list here, but McAdoo is the one most near and dear to my heart. I can prove my descent from Barnett McAdoo, who was born in 1777, lived in Dickson County from just before 1800 to after 1810, at which time he moved to Carroll County, Tennessee, where he put down roots. He died in January 1858. I apologize for being so vague on the dates. I am writing from my parents' home, where I will be staying for the next week or so while I help my parents deal with a health crisis, and I don't have my records with me. Barnett and his wife, Frances Murphree, had 12 children that we are certain of, because the court case to partition Barnett's estate names 11 of them, and another, James G. McAdoo (1809-1824), is buried in the McAdoo Cemetery in Carroll County -- and his gravestone is still readable. Barnett appears to have had another son, Barnett Alexander McAdoo, who continued to live in Dickson County after Barnett and most of his other children moved to Carroll County. I believe that Barnett Alexander was the son of an unknown first wife (although B.A. might have been illegitimate). Barnett's oldest proven son, William McAdoo, also stayed in Dickson County. I have made contact with several searchers in Barnett Alexander's line, but I have no contact to William McAdoo's line, and I would like one. After Barnett, my line runs thus: Levi Pinkney 'Pink' McAdoo (~1811-1867), who was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister and moved with the family of Benjamin and Hannah Moore Harper to southwestern Missouri about 1830, where he married the Harpers' daughter Minerva Ellen and raised a large family, among them Andrew Jackson 'Jack' McAdoo (1837-1913), who spent most of his life in Laclede County, Missouri, where he married Martha Catherine Clinkingbeard and also raised a large (14 births, 11 survived to marry, 10 to have children that we know of), among them Joel Alexander 'Joe' McAdoo (1860-1919), who married Rachel Amy Bragg and farmed in Douglas County, Missouri, before deserting his family and roaming the country, until he was hit by a train while driving a team of horses across a country crossing. His oldest son was Clarence McAdoo (1889-1963), who raised his seven younger brothers and sisters before enlisting in World War I, after which he married Zella Maude 'Maude' Babcock. They wanted to have a numerous family, but only two children were born alive. One, a girl, died at the age of a week, and the other was my father, Harlan Peter McAdoo, who is still living. I have lots of stories beginning with my grandfather, and even a few about my great-grandfather and gg-grandfather. I wish I knew more about the two generations before that. I do have the records of the Civil War service of Pink and Jack McAdoo in the Missouri Cavalry, Pink as a chaplain and Jack as a private, but they don't really tell me much. I also know the name of Barnett's father: William McAdoo. But I have NO idea WHICH William McAdoo he was or even where he lived. On the 1850 Tennessee Census, Barnett is shown as having been born in North Carolina, so I believe that William McAdoo and his wife(?)/paramour(?) lived in North Carolina for at least a little while around 1777, but that's about all. Frances's father was Levi Murphree, and she may have been born in South Carolina, and that's about all I know. Any help from any source is greatly appreciated, and I will be glad to pass on any information I have that might be of use to others. For now, however, I probably will just lurk in the background, hoping to locate another McAdoo searcher (or a Harper or Murphree or Clinkingbeard or Bragg or . . . searcher) who can fill in some of the gaps in my knowledge. I apologize for going on for so long. Writing comes easily to me, and sometimes I go on too long. Can you help this lady? Thanks Cher ----- Original Message ----- Afternoon Rocking I know that some of you are on the Dickson Co, TN list. Do any of you know how to contact "moandpapa@cs.com?" I think the guy's name is Dave Ogle. I would appreciate any connection. Judy West Callyallyy@AOL.com
Hi Sue - I am really having a hard time contacting you. First of all, how do I become a member of Afternoonrocking List? And second, yes I know Lila Tracy quite well. She is my brother's mother-in-law. I told her you were trying to locate her but she could not reply to you either. Please contact me off list and I will be most happy to give you her e-mail address. She is quite anxious to hear from you. Best wishes, Susy Johnson
Ira, May the Lord be with you and your family at this time (and always). You all will be in my pray's and thoughts. Janet L.
Welcome back Marie Janet L.
Welcome Carole... you will really love this group...its like talking to a bunch of your relatives some you know well and some not so well... but we share everything.. family stories and all.. as gathering our history is a LOT more than numbers . dates and names... which aren't "real' until you put faces and stories behind them... Best wishes and luck Lenora
Mollie... today a new computer will be installed....it already had a year of MSN free in it...but since I dont know if I will like it that way or not.. I am keepiong both AOL and MSN for a while.. so you might see me under MSN... if I get it all set up okay.... I usually have ony AOL. but they say that many people have two or even more ISP's so I guess I will try it... wish me luck.... ps.. How do I find where to write for a Historical society or library in Henry co. that might have buriel records for J.V. Mitchell.?. since he had such a small income I wonder if he want buried in a soldiers cemetery somewhere....havent found him yet... died in 1936 after more than twenty years as J.Peace.. wouldnt you think there might be an newspaper article on him maybe?? I get confused as his Pension states that he lived in Hardeman and Henry...believe that Henry was where Savannah is located.. and need to find info there if possible on Mary Jarrett the wife....its been a long time coming .. but have those personal letters written in his records that made it all worthwhile..... Later. Lenora
I'm glad to see Carole has joined our family and Marie has come home! That's the way it is Carole---we might have to leave the list for a while but we usually come back because we miss it so much. You will find we are a lot like family here and will do what we can to help you with your research. Along the way, life gives us a few bumps in the road and we all pull together. Right now, we are all thinking of Ira and praying for him and his family. We've been missing him on the list but he's in our hearts---the man is full of information and willing to share when he has time. Please bear with us when we take time out from our research to share our joys and sorrows with each other---that's what makes us "family"! Many of our ancestors probably shared their good/bad times when they were living in this area so we are only carrying on what they started. And now to brag!!! Most of you have heard about my granddaughter Brittany so "Nanny" is going to brag a little. Brittany's 10-year-old All-Star softball team (Clarksville Nationals) won their district----yes, that means they beat Dickson County! (I don't quiet understand just how they beat Dickson because Dickson County's softball teams are usually the best in the area and tough to beat. The word for Dickson County has always been "awesome" and we always dreaded playing them--even 15 years ago when my daughter played.) Anyway, Brittany is leaving in a couple of hours for the State Tournaments in East Tennessee. She and her team are representing our area (Dickson and Montgomery Counties) and I have to admit that I am proud to have them representing the area. They are young ladies both on and off the field. So many times, I see parents and teams that show very little sportsmanship but I've not seen it in this group of kids (and parents). When the girls won their district, the coach asked what they wanted---he's now sporting a new Mohawk (haircut)! I sure hope they win the State competition because if they do, he's given them permission to dye the Mohawk red, white, and blue! Braggin's over---I'm going back to my apples! (Sure wish Jay Cee had them---like she needs more apples!) Sandy Ellis
Ira Bell is a corner stone to middle Tennessee's genealogy research. I dont know how many lists he is on, but I think he is on Benton, Stewart and Danville Crossing...probably LBL. Nobody carries in their memory more information on Middle Tennessee and Central U.S. railroading history than him. He is ALWAYS a gentleman and a scholar; a sharer of anything he has that will help fellow researchers...or lift a down spirit. Ira's family is being tried sorely right now and they are in great need of our prayers. Imogene his beloved wife appears to have suffered a stroke that may well be catastrophic. Please pray for this family. I have never met a kinder, more loving man and his devotion to his family is exemplary. My heard is so saddened by this news... Ira loves God and knows the power of prayer. Let's put that power to work for him right now. Thank you so much. Cher (Please share this with Prayer Warriors that you know..... )
Lenora: Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I'm a new researcher and it's tips like this that can really make a difference. BTW, I've only been a member of this list for a couple of days, but already have found everyone so courteous and helpful! I'm gonna LIKE it! --- LAnde12781@aol.com wrote: ===== Carole Ann Heller "Profanity is a small mind's way of expressing itself forcefully." __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? To all who looked so hard.. I have just received and extra envelope of Civil War papers.... in recieving the first pages i noticed that there was a top corner of a letter handwritten that was laying on the copier when they sent my records for Jeremiah...... after sending back the requested amount money due I copied that corner of the letter and included a few extra bucks and ask if the a letter was still in the file that I wanted that also as it had a family name in the corner.....I was still trying to be absolutely sure that was my Jeremiah V. Mitchell...... Lo and behold an envelope came back already with not only that but copies of six other letters that had been type in behalf of Jeremiahs getting a Pension... took three years to finally get it! the letter was written by W.J. Dudley Climer! Who I suppose is probably the father of Dudley Climer that married my Susan Mitchell! and it stated that they had been neighbors for many years... and gave particulars........ Another letter was from J. Averritt who stated that Jeremiah was his uncle and lived near them and told that Jeremiah had quit school to join the Confederate Army!.. He told of the battles the family had said that he fought in and the defeats of the army and the fears for Jeremiah's safety by the family.. and that Jeremiah was very young and barfooted and ill health because of the hardships of the war..... The reasoon that I tell all of you is to tell you that when you write fro somone's war records.. you might get something differnt. or even more evry time you ask! All the letters were in the file and it would be better if they copied whole files upon request......My daughter in law just received pages and pages of war records to add to her grandfather that were missing from the file when she had first sent for it.... So I am a happy camper tonight after all these years on this member at least... maybe now I can find wife Mary Jarrett... It also told me that Jeremiah was in school when the war started.. maybe there are old school records for 1861 somwhere......and that fact that for at least twenty years Jeremiah was a member of the law as they said... and served repeatedly as Justice of The Peace...... lots of nice family things to know........ So all keep trying and you might get a lucky as I did... Lenora...
