    1. Re: [TNDICKSO] war of 1812 muster rolls
    2. Billy Jones
    3. Michael Smith - I don't have a muster roll for the 2nd Reg West Tn Militia, however my GGGG grandfather John Jones was a soldier in Captain Pipkin's Company of Military Infantry and fought in the Battle of New Orleans. He was wounded in the chin by a British Musket Ball, the wound was not fatal and he did not ask for nor receive any compensation according to the info I have. The following is from info furnished by one of my relatives in the 1930's. John Jones is listed among the Earlly Day Militia Officers of Dickson County. A good idea of some of the early families who lived in Dickson County Tennessee may be obtained from the following list of officers of the 25th Regiment of Light Infantry, of Tennessee which was raised mostly in that county. Among the officers listed is William Jarnegan, Lt. 1809, John Jones, Ensign, 1809, Thomas Jones Ensign 1807 James Lewis, Lt, 1807. This info from Tennessee Cousins - Ray pp. 700. I thought you might be interested in this info. Billy Jones ----- Original Message ----- From: michael smith Sent: Tuesday, August 14, 2001 12:21 PM To: TNDICKSO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TNDICKSO] war of 1812 muster rolls Does anyone have muster rolls for 2nd reg. West TN. Milta? I have posted a brief history below - it would appear any of our relatives from Dickson or surrounding counties probaly served in this unit and thusly "The Battle of New Orleans". In my research for John Galloway, I have determined that prior to 1816, there were only 4 male Galloways in Middle/West Tn. Of those 4, John in Dickson is one of them. Because of his age at that time - I thought I better check to see if there was a John Galloway in the war of 1812 - of course there were several - but only one from West TN, and only 3 Galloways total from West TN. John (Dickson) Enoch & James (Williamson - later Maury) ******************************************************* COLONEL JOHN COCKE DESIGNATION: 2nd Regiment of West Tennessee Militia DATES: November 1814 - May 1815 MEN MOSTLY FROM: Montgomery, Williamson, Dickson, Hickman, Robertson, Rutherford, and Stewart Counties CAPTAINS: George Barnes, Samuel Carothers, Richard Crunk, John Dalton, Francis Ellis, James Gault, James Gray, Bird Nance, Joseph Price, John Weakley BRIEF HISTORY: This regiment was one of three West Tennessee militia units at New Orleans under the command of Major General William Carroll. They were part of the flotilla that went down to New Orleans via the Cumberland, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers. The Nashville Clarion of 21 February 1815 mentions that Captain John Weakly, of Montgomery County, was at the breastworks of Jackson's line at New Orleans during the battle of 8 January. Muster rolls of the regiment show no battle casualties, but do reveal many deaths due to sickness -- a common occurrence for troops stationed at New Orleans in the months of February/March 1815. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 2. Floreda - Thanks for the WHITEHORN information. He is one of my brick walls. You saw my REEVES info that I posted, right ? I have heard of Elvis WHITEHORN and i know he had a brother named James but I have been unable to find anything on him. Poison ivy - I wouldn't even know it if I saw it. I guess it doesn't grow out here - i'm not sure. When my aunt was a child she was jealous of the fact that her sisters got to stay home from school because they had poison ivy rashes, itches, etc. so she went out and layed in the poison ivy and rubbed all over in it. She was sorry ! haha !! Again, thanks for the information . Linda in NM

    3. Thanks for the information, Roger. (I remember you from JayCee's cooking list! You been building any more barns lately?) I have been satisfied with Mindspring until the past few months. When I contacted them about the access number, they basically let me know they'd received my message. (No solutions/suggestions.) It's "bad" when I try to get online between 3:30 and 5:00 (in the morning!) and get busy signals. I don't plan to ever "hire" anyone to go near my computer. My son wouldn't allow anyone else to touch this computer. (He is a "principal database developer, architect, and administrator"---whatever that means. I just stomp my feet and he comes running!) Are you two planning another trip back to Tennessee this fall? (It's difficult to keep up with all the people visiting this area!) If you do, be sure to check out the new location of the Montgomery Co. Archives if you get a chance. (I forget what families you are researching!) Sandy Ellis

    2. Saandy. after my three weeks of computer ell I can sympathize.. took the other computer back and went back to Compaq.. HOWEVER I never did get my free MSN adn AOL to work together in the new Windows 2001! three weeks of slaving was long enough.. Now I am told that yes they can work togehter. but till Windows 98> They should have told me that first....I think it can be done.. but with the new windows it seems that it is not the best thing to do. I sometimes rave and rant to AOL.. some of the "tech"s are about as informed as to programing etc than I am. Stay with the though as they actually respond.. which I find some of the others don't.. apparently they hope if you wait long enough you will forget! I asked one of them how to get Winzip out of my computer as it messed everything up;. He said if I was having that much problem to contact winzip themselves..Idiot. after I bumbled around in the control panel I found I clicked on uninstall and it was done.! I am waiting for the customer service follow up they always send.! Keep my address handy in case everthing disappears in the dark insides of your computer.. Seems like many are always starting new again like I do.. Must be a computer necessity thing to see if you really want to do this. I understand the only DSL can get you through faster.. but a few days ago I hear they are having problems too.. Cant win I guess. Have a better day cuz. Lenora

    3. Is anyone on this list using Mindspring/Earthlink and having problems getting on line? My local access number was changed to include Ft. Campbell and Hopkinsville---the only local number has a 439 prefix! For the past month or so, I've had to compete with everyone else---kept getting busy signals! Well, for the past 2 days, as soon as I get online, I get kicked off and a "reconnect" message. The good thing is I have a "free trial" with MSN and AOL---so Earthlink might be losing a customer! (Not that they would care) They just raised their rates, too---not a good time to have lousy service. I just sent a message to "customer support" and if I don't get some kind of satisfaction (in the past couple of months, the support has been about as lousy as the service), I will be changing my email address. Since I correspond with many people on this list, I thought I'd let you know there is a "problem"---and I wouldn't want Mollie to get upset if she sees an "unsubscribe" message because she would immediately get a "subscribe" message from the new address! 3. We have been with earthlink for four years now, and have had minimal problems with them. Before you go to MSN or AOL, call their support 800 # ans talk to a rep. Your beat bet would be to call very late at night or early in the morning. We are hearing all kinds of horror stories about MSN and AOL has it's own problems. I do know that once you download a free AOL program, you will not be able to get rid of all of it until you call a professional or replace yopur harddrive. As I said we have had good luck with calling them in the wee hours, and they have helped us tremendously.
