Thanks Mickey for responding. I do not have anything on she or her family, and if you have the time someday, I would appreciate what you have. Who knows, there may be a connection somewhere down the road. Again thanks Bette
Actually yes. He knew the graves were in the grove of trees. The previous owner had barred children of James Linzy years ago and they didn't know they had rights. When the new owner bought the place he discovered the graves and moved some stones around after a tree fell. My dad told me about where it was and I went on a search and found it a few years ago. When I asked he went with me to the site and was cordial. the second timeI went to record the stones He advised it would do no good to return. that was the last time I found him there , but the week after he had moved the feeders into the grove and all his cattle was milling about. Just after that time I became disabled and was restricted for about two years. I intend to do something, but at this time I do not know what. I have always thought it was counterproductive to have a fenced area in the middle of a pasture and I do not think that would be the best way to handle the situation. I would just like to Id the graves and restore the stones disturbed.I may persue this in the late fall. Doug - Have you tried talking with the landowner in a very pleasant way, the way you would like to be approached? I have found most people who understand a problem will help you solve it. I just found my ggg grandfathers Jones Family Cemetery (which consist of only 7 graves) on his old farm. The owner knew it was there, but had no idea of the family descendants as no one had ever approached him. He was very nice and advised he would be glad to help me, that I was more than welcome to come back anytime to restore the cemetery. This I plan to do. Good luck. Mollie - Have been talking with THE SHADOW and we have had a great conversation. She gave me some great tips and was really nice to talk with her. As usual the folks on TNDICKSO have proved to be the most helpful I have talked to. My project now is to get the Jones Family Cemetery back in shape and see if I can get a historical marker put there. My ggg grandfather who was born in Dickson Co. Tn, served in the Ky. General Assembly and as sheriff of Graves County Ky. Hope this will qualify for the historical marker. Have a great day!!!! Janet and I found a cemetery today (if you could call it that) It is listed in the cemtery books as Strong Cemtery. The headstones were all leaned against trees and each other , some where readable and some were not. But it was a shame that it was allowed to get in that shape. No MacAdoo in Dickoson... but saw a few in Henry not far away when I searched there . Also had a lot of Ellis too. Worth a try. I found my Dickson relative there when all the rest of the family stayed in Dickson. Some of them went to Henry after serving in Civil War. Lenora

Sharon,, I will get back tomorrow as I have to shut down know.. Joseph Peeler Gist would have been the circa 1820 to 1840. I just received his Civil War Papers after many many years of searching...First time we ever had this in the family records. Will get out the book in the morning and look at the dates. But I know this is the general area. No one ever questioooned his but me. And I also thought that thought they sometimese named them after friends etc..I knew because of the family names that they were always, so far, from related lines and families. When I saw them in Dickson where the Mitchells were located,, the opposite paternal line, I knew there ahd to be a clue there somewhere. I do not have the time yet to search the Halliburotns that also appear there .. but I know that Joseph Peeler Gist and wife Elizabeth Thompson, named one of their sons Halliburton. So that pretty much says that there was a connection in most likley, South Carolina where many of the settlers were originally from. Gets intriguing doesn it?? Lenora
Lenora- wHAT ARE THE DATES FOR YOUR GREAT GRANDFATHER? I might some day run across since I haven't researched the Peelers all the way back. That is strange that his middle name would be Peeler, unless someone in your family was a Peeler at one time . It is very hard when 2 families have the same name and live in about the same location and name their children the same names almost. I have run across this a time or two, I bet you have too. Sharon
Mollie, have you checked Linda Cole's Dickson website? You are re-copying cemeteries that have recently been recorded and given to Linda. I know, because I have given her some of them, including the Strong Cemetery! Charlotte
Micheal... Wish I did know about the Peelers! There were loads of Peelers from Spartanburg and areas in South Carolina...... but I didnt connect to the Gist Family genelaogy which had already been done and in a documented book....always bothered me though as I see Peelers gave land for a school and apparently had a great deal to do with the area around Spartanberg in South Carolina... My family descended from Christopher Gist the famous Frontiersman and Explorer in many history books...I keep trying though as they were early settlers..you might find thats the begining of some of your lines...many were going West as mine did for land grants and war bounty lands given. Mine ended in Texas in the early 1850's when it was still so wild and woolly that they had a hard time settling communities there. If you have time it would prpobably help you in your search if you looked through some of the Deds and Wills etc. of South Carolina. Sure wish we could connect... apparently no one has ever done the Peelers as far as I can see Lenora
Billy, I have to agree with you. Janet and I found a cemetery today (if you could call it that) It is listed in the cemtery books as Strong Cemtery. The headstones were all leaned against trees and each other , some where readable and some were not. But it was a shame that it was allowed to get in that shape. I became aware of my ggg grandfathers cemetery just this year. I found it thanks to a genealogist who answered a query I had written. Even though I lived within 12 miles of the family cemetery I did not know it existed not had any of my family ever discussed it. > > I made a trip to my home town Mayfield Ky. in early August with the purpose of finding the Jones Family Cemetery. It contains only 7 graves. Thanks to a good friend who helped me search and a old map from the early 30's we found the cemetery. It was overgrown with weeds and a huge cedar tree had fallen through the cemetery knocking all of the markers off of their base. Some were covered with dirt and we had to use a probe to find the headstone. The cattle could roam through the cemetery. > > I plan on going back this fall and plan to attempt to reconstruct the cemetery, see if the headstones can be remounted on their base, and to have them cleaned. If necessary I will erect a fence if the landowner will not do so. He said he was aware of the cemetery but had not viewed it in several years. He advised he would help with the problem. > > The oldest grave in the cemetery is my gggg grandmother Jane Jones who died March 18, 1856. She was born in Dickson Co. Tn and moved to Graves Co. I believe my Gilmore brick wall is higher and thicker. Caroline has already helped me a lot just by eliminating some possiblities. So...if you can help Caroline, can you also keep me in mind? I am looking for ANNA GILMORE. I really know little about her except family tradition which said "Anna was one of those Dickson County Gilmores." She was born in 1786 in Virginia and died in 1851 in Humphreys County, TN. She was married to JAMES TEAS about 1807 (based on the fact that their first child was born 20 October 1808). I am relatively sure that James Teas was a brother to William Teas who was a member of the first court of Dickson County. Other siblings were, Joseph Teas, Charles Teas, George Teas, Jane Teas and Martha Teas. They were children of Charles Teas who died about 1799. I do not have a will but I do have the sale of his estate which was recorded in Montgomery County as Dickson was not formed yet. I am quite sure the family lived in the Yellow Creek area - I am not sure exactly sure where of even if the elder Charles owned his land. So far I have not found a deed. However, his son, William, did buy and later sold land "on both sides of Yellow Creek" mentioning a cemetery in both documents. On 9 November 1806 Joseph Teas sold his rights to 6 slaves to his brother William Teas. Those slaves belonging to the estate of their father, Charles Teas. One of the witnesses was Matthew Gilmore. Most of the Teas family did move on west by 1809 or 1810. Most lived in Humphreys County for a short time, but only James Teas stayed there. He and Anna were my gg grandparents. Surely there is someone out there who could give me and Caroline at least a hint as to where to look next. We have run out of ideas.........Help. Best wishes, Susy Anderson Johnson
For those of you researching the Collier family, don't forget to look in Stewart Co. I was there researching a few weeks ago and the name Collier pops up now and then ! Deanna
Dear Sharon.. cant remember if I contact you or not... I am related through the Gilmores as one of the William W. Mitchells daughters married Samual Gilmore.. I think we conversed befor but it has been some time.................Also, though you found no connection to me for the Peelers, please keep me in mind.. My great grandfather was named Joseph Peeler Gist... and we have never been able to find out why they used this particular name. Checking in....... Lenora
Caroline, I have a little history of a Major, FRANCIS LOGAN b 1734, in New York, d April 2, 1826, in Rutherford Co., NC. He married HANNAH TRIMBLE b 1733 in Augusta Co., VA, d March 24, 1805, Rutherford Co., NC. They married Nov. 30, 1761 in NC. My line comes from HANNAH TRIMBLE, not the LOGAN's, but as I glance through the history I do find a MARGARET (which is a very common name) mentioned a couple of times. If you think this could be of any interest to you, I would be glad to send you copies. There are a lot of notes of documentation included. Pat Durham McRae, in Indiana Researching: TRIMBLE, IVY/IVEY/IVIE, ELDER, HALL, FUSSELL, DURHAM, THOMPSON & FLORA in the South.
Lenora - I just happen to be doing a bit of research for someone who descends from the Galloway's who moved into the Dickson county in the late 1860, early 1870's. (my Galloways were long since gone from Dickson - no relation) Anyway I find that a Nettie Peeler (b.abt. 1887) married John Washington Galloway probably about 1902 or so - their first son was born in 1903. J.W. Galloway was a member of the Dickson Co City Council in the early 1900's and Neetie Peeler was a native of Hickman Co and her father was Jake Peeler! Any connection on these Peelers! --- LAnde12781@aol.com wrote: > Dear Sharon.. cant remember if I contact you or > not... I am related through > the Gilmores as one of the William W.
