What a fascinating surname! What nationality is it? What do you mean by "500 working plantation" and "dark family history?" Betty, I don't know if you received any response to your request for a look-up on William Mosely/Moxley or not, but I did check on Ancestry.com census records, and did not find a WILLIAM MOSELY/MOXLEY in Dickson Co. TN. However I did find a WILLIAM MOSELY marriage to a MARY ERB, no location or date given. WILLIAM MOSELY marriage to a JANE WARD, Sept. 12, 1858 in Weakley Co. TN, which is not the date, but the county is fairly close to Dickson. Sorry I couldn't find more. Pat Durham McRae, in Indiana

Welcome to the list!!!! I don't have any infor. on those families, but wondered if you knew what the name of the plantation was at that time maybe it might ring a bell. "Dark family History" to me is one of the perks of genealogy research, it's almost like uncovering your own mystery story! I found out not too many years ago of bootleggers, horse theives (maybe, they denied it and weren't convicted but still makes you wonder) and the best one by far was my great great grandfather who's parents were well to do cotton farmers in New Orleans and he married the "kitchen maid" and was forevermore the black sheep. Interesting !! Well,, hope you have a great night! While looking at early records for Montgomery County, TN, I found a few Ellises that I'd like further information on. I'm hoping someone will recognize them and can "fill me in". Elisha Ellis---listed on the 1800 Tax List, 1 WP, Capt. Brinson's Co.--also signed 1803 petition to form Dickson County, TN from Montgomery Co. lands. He is also mentioned in a Wells Family history as one of the families moving from SE NC to this area of Tennessee. George Ellis---married Sarah Felton on 3 Apr 1802 and served on the jury in June 1806. John Ellis---was bondsman when Daniel McIntosh married Franky Beard on 26 Apr 1802. Robert Ellis---received Land Warrant 2028, dated 20 May 1793--Deed Book "B", page 207--land "south of the river" on Johnston's Creek. (Note: this "Johnston's Creek" is in what became Dickson Co., TN)----7 Aug 1794, Deed Book "B", page 215--Robert Ellis "late" sold above mentioned land to John G. and Thomas Blount in NC. I would appreciate ANY information on these Ellises--or any possible connections to them. Sandy Ellis
Well, I know I may have driven many of you to tears with my queries on Matthew Gilmore ( my brick wall and I just can't lay down the hammer!) Since there hasn't been much action lately I thought maybe I would post the names of his siblings all of which did live in Dickson County at some time during their lives ( circa 1800-1850) in hopes that it might ring a bell with someone, so here goes----- Elizabeth Gilmore married George Davidson they had two children George and Jane Mary Gilmore married Alex Scott Jane Gilmore married James McCrory (McCrory Lane in Nashville is named for his father) William Gilmore-at one time lived on Barton's Creek Road James Gilmore John Gilmore And of course my Favorite MATTHEW GILMORE married Margaret Logan. My next question is not related to the Gilmore family but looking for information on Fannie Cooksey daughter of George T.Cooksey. Fannie married in the 1860's and was widowed and remarried in the1880's. Hope you all have a great night! Caroline
