While I would ove any pictures of the area.. I am looking for a cmemetery where my grandfather Jeremiah Van Buren Mitchell was buried there in very early 1920 to 30.. after his death there in the area. He does not seem to be buried in a National Cemetery for his Civil War Service.. He was a local Sheriff for twenty years according to the papers I received.. and was discharged from the Confederate service due to bad feet and legs and other things from war service.. he was in failing health but continued to be of much service to he communnity.. So we feel that he must be bureid there somewhere.. His young wife Mary had died after a few short years of marriage...He did not say in his Petition where she was buried so we might assume it is in the same area. Do you know how I might contact the Cemeterys there.? And or old newspaper searches in a library or records there?? Thank you so much for your time with this effort which has been stalled for years in regards to the above situation... Lenora Cherry courthouse?? Maybe they would have a record on him!!!!!??????
Sandy I have long wondered about Catherine in NJ OR PA....when searching all those years ago.. they both pointed towards leaving there and moving towards TN. MANY years ago someone sent me the Catherine you spoke of and , said that they believed this was the one we are now searching for. They also questioned the fact that in TN there was only James W. Hays and Solomon and Catherine.. leaving us to believe there is a whole "rest of family" somewhere there. Somewhere in the chest in the garage is a note to myself regarding fnding Solomon Hays in another county in TN.. not far if I remember correctly from TN in pages of old newpaper articles someone had posted ...It definately said "the Solomon Hays had just built himself a large and grand house in the area"....I think I mentioned it to you but we never followed it up further..I just remember that it proved that he was still alive after we had found him on the Census. and that he was alone according to the article. Other people have written also searching the Hays lines and have said that they though there was a "whole " family somwhere that we havent seen yet. I really ahve to see if I an dig back some years and find that note.....as I know it was shortly after the census where we last saw him.. He was still in TN... And the fact that he was building a large house might mean that he expected other family members to stay with him from time to time... I knokw this is so vague. Wil try to get back soon.. Sprained my first finger yesterday so its hard to type very fast and also cut the small finger on the other hand...some days are just not safe! Lenora
Hi Linda-- I haven't done any research on Solomon or his family. Lenora and I descend from James W. but we know Solomon was his brother. The 1850 census shows their mother Catherine living with Solomon and Angeline. It also shows their 2-month-old son James W. (I also found a marriage record that shows Solomon and "Angaline" were married 9 June 1850.) The census I'm looking at is too dark to read Angeline's age when the census was taken. Since Lenora and I haven't had any luck researching James W., I thought I'd see if I could find anything on Solomon that might lead us to their father. Maybe Lenora knows who Angeline's parents are. She has been working on this line longer than I have. I'd be willing to claim your James C. or his brother (if he has one)---but I think I'd better try to document her parents! Lenora and I are at a complete standstill with this family and our brick wall is in Dickson County! With the Hays/Hayes line, we haven't been able to get past James W., Solomon, and Catherine or the 1850 census. We know James W. married Mary Bartee, daughter of Jesse and Sarah Harkleroad Bartee. Jesse and Sarah were also in Dickson Co but we can't find them before they came to the area! (Goodspeed says Sarah is the daughter of Henry Harkleroad but we can't find any proof of that, either!) Hello Lenora, When you say pictures of Savannah, what exactly do you want....the Cherry mansion, the court house, the river???? Give me a list of some things that might interest you and I will see what I can do. Also, I can go through Bolivar, which is in Hardeman Co., if there is something there that is of interest to you. Have a happy day! Linda in W.TN At 12:14 PM 10/07/2001 EDT, you wrote: >Linda that would be great.... Dear Sandy.... I saw your posting below regarding HAMBRICKs in Dickson Co. Who are the parents of your Angeline HAMBRICK? My 2-great-grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth "Bettie" HAMBRICK from Dickson Co. Her father was James C. HAMBRICK. I do have some information on the HAMBRICKs though not a great deal and am certainly glad to share what I have with other researchers. Let me know and have a grand week! Linda in W.TN At 08:30 PM 10/09/2001 -0500, you wrote: >Does anyone know anything about the Hays/Hayes people that were in Dickson >County in the 1850s? James W. Does anyone know anything about the Hays/Hayes people that were in Dickson County in the 1850s? James W. Hayes married Mary Bartee and Solomon Hayes married Angeline Hambrick---both marriages took place in Dickson County. Maybe someone has something "new" on the Bartee family or knows something about the Hambricks? Lenora---here's a curiosity for you. James W. and Mary Bartee Hayes were the parents of my gg-grandfather Theodore Baxter. Theodore married Clara Trump. Clara was the daughter of Isaiah Trump and Hester Reitzel. Isaiah and Hester were married in Dauphin Co., PA where they both lived. Isaiah drowned during the Civil War, Hester remarried and the family moved to Stewart Co., TN---just a few doors from James W. and Mary Hayes. Last night I was playing around (I was bored!) and did a search for Solomon Hays. I found several Hayses in Dauphin Co., PA! We know the census records say James W. and Solomon were born in KY. We know my "greats" said they were from W VA. We know the census says Catherine (their mother) was born in NJ. What we don't know is who their father was or where he was from! (Could these families have known each other in PA?) The 1850 census isn't too clear--James W was 37 and it looks like Solomon was 26 on that census. (Are we missing a half-dozen or so kids?( And Catherine is shown as 62---sure she could have had Solomon at 36 but would James W be her firstborn at 25? (Maybe we are missing a full dozen kids!) Okay----this list is SLOW!!!! Come on, people----I'm bored! I miss my friends----where are you folks? Sandy Ellis

Don't give up, Lenora! Someday we will find a census record of some Hayes man who was married to a woman named Catherine and had 2 sons named J.W. and Soloman. Of course, it will only raise more questions for us! From what I've heard, maybe we need to check the genealogies of some "outlaws"---those Hayeses were "mean"! I remember my great-grandmother telling my Mom that she'd better do something (I don't remember what she wanted). "Aunt Pearl" said if Mama didn't do it, she would come back an haunt her. Mama was afraid NOT to do it---she was sure "Aunt Pearl" would come back! "Aunt Pearl" was also known for her "doctoring". Daddy always said whenever any of the boys got a wart, they went to see her. She would sit down and talk to the boy and rub his wart while they talked----the next day, the wart would be gone! (Maybe she got it from that German side--her mother's family.) JW and Mary Bartee Hayes moved to the Hayes farm in Stewart County. Theodore and Clara Trump Hayes lived on that farm until the early 1900s. "Aunt Pearl" told that some of the other family members moved in the house and told Theodore to move his family out! That's when/why he and Clara moved their kids to Montgomery County. Daddy also wants me to pull the deeds on this Montgomery Co. land. He said that the land went to all the children when Theodore and Clara died. The land was eventually sold but "Aunt Pearl" claimed she never signed the papers to sell the land---she also mentioned others that didn't agree to sell it. I'm told that this land is across the river from Clarksville, between the sand company and the railroad bridge. (There used to be a "foot bridge" across the river and that's the way they came to town on Saturdays.) The Ellises in Hardeman County are probably related to Gary but I haven't researched them yet. I'm still "collecting" the ones in this area. I'd sure like to find someone that could document the children of Miles and Polly Bobbitt Ellis or when/where Miles and Polly died. Speaking of Ellises----Gary's g-grandfather was in the Battle of Shiloh. I've had his records for over 20 years and still go back and read them---and learn more every time! He was denied his pension because he was classified as a deserter so he wrote a letter telling about the battles he was in. He named names, too! He was in a hospital and the doctors gave him his discharge papers but he couldn't get to his company for his commanders to sign them. He was captured and escaped with 3 other men. Since they couldn't get to their company and they had their (unsigned) discharge papers, they decided to walk home. He told how many days it took to walk home to Stewart Co. and how many weeks he was in the bed after he got home---said he'd fought the last battle he was in with the mumps! After his accounts of what happened, he was approved for his pension but died before he got a check. His widow applied for the pension and was approved---but she died before she got a check, too! Don't give up on the Hayes---we will find them! And we are going to find out just who Jesse Bartee and Sarah Harkleroad were, too! Sandy Ellis
Lenora- I loved them!!Thanks for a wholesome laugh or a lot of them !!! Sharon
Yep.. I am tired of feeling depressed.... Say did any of those Ellis I found in Hardeman belong to you?????? I am at a standstill here in the US searches. but the searches in The West Indies have given me a bonanza of family information.. Much more than I ever thought I would have. To bad we cant say the same in our search.. I have come to the conclusion it IS all about money.. IF we were rich I bet we could go throug hte records personally of all the places you mentioned in your letter just know and ahve a host of informaton...It still grips me that we cant nail down positive information on Solomon Hays..... Lenora
Thanks Lenora! With all that has been happening in our world, we sometimes forget to laugh. (Sept. 11th was my son's 30th birthday--he's older than my daughter who was born on July 4th.) Many of the messages I've received have been reminders of our tragedy and if we dwell on it too much, we tend to get depressed. While I don't want to forget what has happened or the people that lost their lives, their families, and the many people working toward "closure", I think we as a nation need to go about our daily lives as normally as possible. If we live in fear, if we give up our freedoms, the terrorists "win". While we mourn our loses, let's not forget to laugh! Now----anyone got any stray Ellises wondering around their family trees? Does anyone in the Leatherwood area know anything about an old Ellis homeplace and a family cemetary? Several of us sure would like to know who's buried in that cemetary! Sandy Ellis

They were ready to discuss the last one. The teacher asked if anyone could tell her what it was. Susie raised her hand, stood tall, and quoted, "Thou shall not take the covers off the neighbor's wife." I had been teaching my three year old daughter, Caitlin, the Lord's Prayer. For several evenings at bedtime, she would repeat after me the lines from the prayer. Finally, she decided to go solo. I listened with pride as she carefully enunciated each word, right up to the end of the prayer: "Lead us not into temptation," she prayed, "but deliver us some E-mail. Amen." One Sunday in a Midwest City, a young child was "acting up" during the morning worship hour. The parents did their best to maintain some sense of order in the pew, but, were losing the battle. Finally, the father picked the little fellow up and walked sternly up the aisle on his way out. Just before reaching the safety of the foyer, the little one called loudly to the congregation, "Pray for me! Pray for me!" One particular four-year old prayed, "And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets." A little boy was overheard praying: "Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I am." A Sunday school teacher asked her little children, as they were on the way to church service, "And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?" One bright little girl replied, "Because people are sleeping." The preacher was wired for sound with a lapel mike, and as he preached, he moved briskly about the platform, jerking the mike cord as he went. Then he moved to one side, getting wound up in the cord and nearly tripping before jerking it again. After several circles and jerks, a little girl in the third pew leaned toward her mother and whispered, "If he gets loose, will he hurt us?" Six-year old Angie and her four-year old brother Joel were sitting together in church. Joel giggled, sang and talked out loud. Finally, his big sister had had enough. "You're not supposed to talk out loud in church. "Why? Who's going to stop me?" Joel asked. Angie pointed to the back of the church and said, "See those two men standing by the door? They're shushers." A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5, Ryan, 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. "If Jesus were sitting here, He would say "Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait." Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "Ryan, you be Jesus!" A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore, where a seagull lay dead in the sand. "Daddy, what happened to him?" the son asked. "He died and went to Heaven," the dad replied. The boy thought a moment and then said, "Did God throw him back down?" After the church service a little boy told the pastor, "When I grow up, I'm going to give you some money." "Well, thank you," the pastor replied, "but why?" "Because my daddy says you're one of the poorest preachers we've ever had." A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year old daughter and said, "Would you like to say the blessing? "I wouldn't know what to say," the girl replied. "Just say what you hear Mommy say," the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, "Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?" While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently his five-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased. The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said. "Glory be unto the Faaaather...and unto the Sonnnn...and into the hole you goooo." When my wife quit work to take care of our new baby daughter, countless hours of peek-a-boo and other games slowly took their toll. One evening she smacked her bare toes on the corner of a dresser and, grabbing her foot, sank to the floor. I rushed to her side and asked where it hurt. She looked at me through tear-filled eyes and managed to moan, "It's the piggy that ate roast beef." We had spent the day moving from our farmhouse into our new house in town. Early the next morning, our 3 1/2-year old ran into our bedroom to wake us up. I dressed him and told him to play in the yard and to quit bothering us. About 20 minutes later, he came running back. "Mommy, Mommy," he exclaimed, "everybody has doorbells and they all work." A little girl had just finished her first week of school. "I'm wasting my time," she said to her mother. I can't read, I can't write--and they won't let me talk!" Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?" "Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life," her mother tried to explain, keeping it simple. The child thought about this for a moment, then said, "So why's the groom wearing black?" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Do You Yahoo!? Linda that would be great.... I am still looking for Jeremiah Mitchells burrriel there somplace after he was discharged from the Civil War due to ill health..His war records states that he entered from Savannah...there is some confusion here, not knowing the area well.. as he appears late 1880 and early 1900's,.(died in 1932) in Hardeman county. He is not buried in a Nathtional or Confederate Cemetery as far as I can see. . Since he was in poor health but still Sherriff and Justice of The Peace, I feel that he would have been buried in that area as he was alone until he died according to his records. I have tried to find Funeral Homes that might be able to locate him for me with no success though so far. He disappeared from Dickson in lst census of 1850 so that is when he left for Savannah and joind the Conferdacy. I loved the description of Savannah as it adds to his surroundings and history and becasue as I said he was alone without family.. So I have tried to give him a "place" in the family memories and records.. Thannk you for any help and suggestions. Lenora
I tried to fiind a newspaper or so that I could borrow from a library but found none so far. Thanks, Lenora
