Kathy, Ebenezer Erskine Larkins, born 27 Nov 1812; died between 1870-1880, is the son of James M. Larkins and Mary McAdoo; grandson of John Larkins and Sarah McAdoo, all early settlers in Dickson Co. James M. and Mary McAdoo Larkins had 6 children: 1. Margaret, born 22 June 1811; died 15 Oct 1898; married Robert McNeilly 2. Ebenezer E.; married Elizabeth Alice Dickson and Mary Jane Good 3. Dorcas, born 26 Aug 1814; died 31 Dec 1892; never married 4. James Calvin, born 9 Aug 1816; died 21 Sept 1878; married Susan Gatewood 5. John McAdoo, born 15 June 1819; death date unknown 6. Felix Alexander, born 14 May 1826; died 9 July 1827 The following text is from Robert Corlew's "History of Dickson County": Professor Ebenezer Erskine Larkins, who devoted nearly a half century to teaching in public and private institutions of Middle Tennessee, was one of the best known of the early faculty members of Tracy Adademy in Charlotte. Born and reared in what is now Houston County (Dickson Co. then), Larkins came as a young man during the 1830's to take charge of Tracy, and for the most of the next half century served either as teacher or principal. It's tragic to me that a person so well-respected and influential lies in an unknown grave in the Town Cemetery in Charlotte. Public records show that as his place of burial, but anyone who knew the spot has long since died. Charlotte
Lenora -- Can you give me any more information about this Sarah McAdoo? What is the date of the document Sarah is a name that appears in our family regularly. Of course, Sarah may be the wife of a McAdoo rather than a McAdoo herself. At any rate, there are several McAdoo lines in Kentucky. John McAdoo, Sr., "originally" of Botetourt County, VA, came to Barren County with his daughter, Martha Allen, and died there in 1801. He had several sons, and there is a lot of uncertainty about where they wound up. Also, several McAdoos out of the Pennsylvania lines moved into and out of Kentucky at various times. The Pennsylvania lines also includes one that "started" in Maryland. There also were descendants of Barnett McAdoo, my ancestor, who settled in Kentucky, although the one on which I have the most information is his daughter Rhoda McAdoo, who married William Taylor Malugin and lived in Calloway County, Kentucky. By the way, I put "" around "originally" and "started" because those are the first documents we have for these lines. Anyway, with a little more info, especially the date of the document, I may be able to be more informative. The Larkins family has been closely associated with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church since its founding, by virtue of intermarriages of nieces and nephews of Samuel McAdoo with Larkin or Larkins young men and women. Can you give me a little more ancestry on Ebenezer Erskine Larkins? I might be able to link him up with some of the Larkins who came to Hickman County in the period 1795-1815 or thereabouts. Thanks Sandy for the verbal pictures of the lay of the land. I certainly am trying to get to TN one of these years!!!! Sounds like my kind of country already. Love Lenora
Lenora, You really need to check www.tngenweb.org and you can find all of the TN counties you need. If you look at a map of Tennessee and follow the Cumberland River, it runs from Eastern KY and "dips" into Middle Tennessee before leaving TN in Stewart Co and going back into KY and "emptying" into the Ohio River near Paducah. The Cumberland River was (and still is) very important for transportation in the "Upper Cumberland" area. Overton County is in the upper eastern portion of Middle Tennessee in an area we call the "Cumberland Plateau". This is "hill country"--my granddaddy called them "knobs" because they weren't as large as the mountains further east. The lay of the land wasn't very suitable for travel by wagon. Even today, you can travel many of the old roads--there is no "interstate highway" although they are almost finished with a nice, new road in Clay County--and they have finished the road in Overton County. The old roads are narrow and full of curves---up, down, and around those hills! The Obey River runs into the Cumberland very near the KY state line. There is a little town (smaller than Dover) there by the name of Celina---used to be known as the "Strawberry Capital of the World" before Portland! Celina is the county seat of Clay County and where Dale Hollow Dam is located. Your Mitchell Creek isn't too far from the dam--maybe 3-5 miles by water. It runs from Overton County into Clay County and into the Obey River (Dale Hollow Lake). Depending on the time period, you may be looking for records in Jackson, Overton, or Clay Counties in Tennessee! Since Mitchell Creek runs into the Obey River in Clay County, I think I'd start looking there but I wouldn't count Overton County out! Oh---this area is where the family I was researching (last year) lived. Mitchell Creek isn't far from "Hunter's Cove"---settled by my step-mom's ancestors. It's also not far from the cemetary I told you about where John Sevier's daughter is buried. It's beautiful country! (I keep telling you to come to Tennessee---the invitation still stands!) Sandy Ellis
Thank you Lenora. Bette
Thanks for the Norris info.. I know that William W. Mitchell and Arabella were on tax list in Humphries county in 1838-40 list.. they had several children there and next appear in 1850 in Dickson. It appears that they lived in almost the same area all their lives until William died in Civil War Prisons in Illinois in 1863.. Now that we know there were Norris,, despite repeatedly being told there were none!.. so Arabella must be found somwhere with one of these families....Perhaps in a will of one of these persons?? Much to do.. Now to find the sources that I can search for these/ Thanks you so much Lenora
Thanks Caroline.. I think if I can connect my grandmother Arabella NORRIS Mitchell to parents it might open a lot and maybe connect us even more.. Lenora
Thanks Sandy.. I wrote Obed as thats the way the book wrote it.. Mitchells Creek must have been important in its day as it was frequently mentioned , as a measurement of lands surrounding it The MItchell names are still carried down to this day!. If I could finally get info on their pppparents etc I might have an open door to the rest and connection all. Interesting to note that Norris was for two women. I have searched for years for Norris in the Dickson area and none were to be found by me or anyone alse for that matter. It would be a big help to those searching for Norris who have written over the years. Where is this Mitchell Creek in comparison to where Dickson lives in actual traveling distance I mean. Do you ahve the web site for Overton??? Hope you are having a good weekend.. I am needing to take a breather this weekend myself. Lenora
