My great-great grandmother Charlotte Jane Batson was born in 1821 in Tennessee. She married James Thompson, and a statement from a family member says that they migrated from Bear Creek, Tennessee to Belleview Valley, Missouri around 1848. The only two Batsons I find in the 1820 census for Tennessee are Thomas in Montgomery County and Richard in Dickson. Since it appears that there was a Bear Creek community in Dickson County, I'm going to start first with Richard, trying to determine if he could have been Charlotte's father. Can anyone tell me if birth records are available for that time period, and if so, who do I contact to request a search? Thank you for any assistance, Marilyn Gerrard-Hartman Moniteau County, Missouri

Happy Halloween out there! Every Halloween all of the "Ghost" stories around town start popping up! I just thought I'd share a couple with you--- Feel free to jump in with your own comments on it! CAYBERRY HILL---- A long time ago in the late 1800's along a section of highway 49 west between Vanleer and Charlotte "Old" Dr. Bell ( who has had son's and grandsons since that are still doctors) was driving his horse and buggy on the road. A man stopped him at the bottom of the hill and asked for a ride. Dr.Bell stopped and he got on. He talked to the man for the couple of mile ride or so up the hill and around the curve. When he got to the top he stopped to let the man off, but the man was GONE! Since that time many people have said that they have seen someone trying to get a ride on that rural stretch of road. When my husband was a kid, he got out of the car and walked a stretch of the road with his cousin for a quarter. He was scared but brave and didn't see a thing! Interesting that this story has been around for so many generations! Pinnacle Point Bridge-- this is a new one on me, but some of the high school students told me that they had heard stories around town that if you stopped in the bridge in Southside after dark that a ghost would lift up your vehicle. I'll just pass on checking that out! Train Light in Burns--- I don't know where exactly, but supposedly during the post civil war era a train derailed somewhere in the Burns area. It was because the man that was supposed to signal the train to stop several miles up track's lantern had burned out just as the train came by and he had no way to signal the train at night to slow down. Ever after the man died a light can be seen at the location at night. I've never actually been there but it's one of those stories you hear people around town talking about and saying that either they saw the light or someone in the past few generations of their family had seen it. I'm staying clear of there myself! Well, just thought ya'll might enjoy hearing a couple of those! If you had family in these areas about 100 years ago, they might have been talking about some of these things! The Cayberry Hill one apparently was a big thing because Dr. Bell was a highly respected member of the community and there's not many people around Vanleer even today that haven't hear something about it! Have a great night ya'll! Caroline

That is just a hop, skip and jump from Tennessee City. Being the rural kind of backwoods community that it is, I feel it is pretty likely that there is a connection. I have a minnie Bell Daily b. March 1889, d. Dec 1940; David Crockett Daily b. April 5, 1852; d. Nov 24, 1931; and John Daily who was Dave's brother. I know Dave was married three times. I recently found him, his 3rd wife and 5 children in unmarked graves in McKenzie, TN. I know he had children with his other wives, but not their names.
I am researching a John Wright who came to Dickson County, TN about 1812 and migrated to Illinois soon after 1832. He was probably involved with laying out and maintenance of pioneer roads. Census records indicates that he was born in North Carolina.

There is a surname and given name index in both documents which are available at the Dickson County Archives in Charlotte. I have almost completed abstracts of all the entries of the surnames DICKSON, JAMES and PARRISH. I can send those Word documents to anyone intested via an email attachment (no cost) but forewarn you they are fairly lenghty (especially DICKSON). Also, I am making copies of those abstracts and leaving them at the Archives. If you are interested please feel free to email me. Russ James of Houston Co. TN but can tell you that there was a very wealthy WEST family whose plantation "West Point" was on Yellow Creek very near the current Houston Co. and Montgomery Co. line. The family is covered in some detail in William J. NESBITT's book "The Primal Families of the Yellow Creek Valley" but there is no Green WEST noted in the index. There is a historical Marker near the WEST plantation home (still standing and occupied) which relates the story of "Sailor's Rest" the location of George WEST a seafaring man who came to this area very early (late 1700's or early 1800's). West Point is located on Ellis Mills Road in what is now Houston Co. (form 1871)and the Sailior's Rest location is on Hwy. 13 in Montogmery Co. I'm no expert on the WEST family but "bump" into them frequently as I research the DICKSON family living in the same area. I do know the family history has some trajedy with many children dying young and the vast WEST land holdings and fortune being eventually lost. The GRAY name is not familiar to me so your Green WEST may have no connection to the WEST family on Yellow Creek. Have you tried the 1850 Dickson County or Montgomery County Censuses? Green WEST might very well be found there with a marriage occurring in Dickson Co. in 1851. He might be listed still living with his parents. I would suggest you also include Montgomery County in your search. It is very possible that the WEST plantaion was part of both Montgomery and Dickson Counties back in the 1850's. I research at the Dickson County Archives quite frequently and would be happy to take a quick look at the Will book and Deed Book entries for Green WEST for you in the 1850's as courtesy or you might try contacting Linda at the Dickson County Archives in Charlotte, TN. Email me if you would like for me to take a quick look. Russ James of Houston Co.
