Isn't Putnam Mountain, near Scottsville, in Jackson County? Apparently around the turn of the previous century, some land was being opened up for homesteading, as my great-granduncle Christopher Columbus Judd and his family homesteaded Putnam Mountain, named after Putnam County, TN. My great-grandfather William A. Rice wrote a letter in 1908 saying he "was going to look at that land that was opening up in Alabama...." to his brother-in-law, John Denton Brown of McMinnville, Warren County, TN, and would stop by their house to stay on the way down there and on the way back. So, a great many families apparently moved down there from the Upper Cumberland, and not just from DeKalb County. I'm wondering if the Thomas Pittman family moved to Alabama between 1850 and 1860 or if they moved to Texas? They lived in Cannon County, where their son Thomas Pitman Jr. married Martha G. LaFevers in 1852. They're gone by 1850.
