I am descended from William Bozarth and Nancy Burton. She was the daughter of Henry Burton and Mary Williams. Their daughter Mary Jane Bozarth was born in April 1838. Her first husband was George Smith, whom she married in DeKalb County in 1856. Her second husband was James Knox Polk Lewis, whom she married in 1863. In 1872, she married James Steele, son of William Steele and Sissy McDole, in DeKalb County. Their children included: 1, Henry Levi Steele born about 1874, who married Amanda Jane Smith about 1894. She died 1943 in Roane County, TN. Henry died in Richmond, Indiana in 1959. 2, Feby Francis Steele - married James Henry Ausutin, and moved out of state. I haven't found anything else on her. They married about 1907 in Putnam County. 3. James Lawson Steele (my great-grandfather) born July 1879. Married Oma Green Smith, dau. of Charles Smith Jr. and Alice C. Fisher, May 8, 1901 in DeKalb County (interestingly, after Alice Fisher died, Charles married Oma Steele, James', Frances's, and Henry's sister, about 1895 in Dekalb). 4. Oma Steele - married Charles Smith Jr. She died about 1945 and is buried in Palmer Cemetery, Silver Point. James Lawson Steele was epileptic, and was sent to the mental hospital (Central State) in Nashville, where he died July 23, 1919 at the age of 40. Back then, they locked epileptics up as "insane". I believe this was inherited from the Bozarths or Burtons, as Phebe Bozarth, according to the 1880 or 1900 census, suffered "fits". Puckett, have you found any other reference to the Bozarth family suffering from epilepsy? Anyway....Mary Jane (Bozarth) Smith-Lewis-Steele died in 1923 or 1924, and is buried at Palmer Cemetery in Silver Point next to her husband, who's grave is unmarked. He died between 1900 and 1908, and I've not found anything to tell me exactly what year James Steele died. Hope this helps!
