Hi--- I am a descendant of Isaac Joshua Taylor (b. 10/24/1863) and Elizabeth Phelps of Indian Creek, Dekalb Co., TN. His son, John Douglas Taylor (b. 7/15/1882 in White Bluff, Dickson Co., TN) remembers poling a raft across the Caney Fork River with his father for a living when he was a young man. Anyway, I have been working on this Taylor branch of genealogy and recently received information that Isaac was the son of Barzilla J. Taylor of Indian Creek, and the grandson of David Jacob Taylor of Smith Co. This line originated with Thomas Taylor who was born in 1637 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. Does any of this sound familiar? I would love to correspond with you regarding this family. Thanks, Angela
I know that an Isaac Taylor and I think James Taylor "chained" land (surveyed it) for several folks up in Overton County in the early 1800's, among them being a John Rice in old Smith County on roaring river (present-day Algood, Putnam County), and Elijah/ElishaChisholm/Chisum. I'm pretty sure these are the same Taylors who later wound up in White County on Taylor's Creek. They surveyed the Rice land in 1802, and it wasn't far from the land owned by Chisum. Curiously, both a John Rice and this same Chisum fellow lived pretty close to each other back in Hawkins County in the 1790's, foot of Bay's Mountain near the Sullivan County line. Isaac Joshua Taylor is descended from John Douglas Taylor b. 1819 in White County, TN. Yes, on Taylor Creek. His father was Isaac Taylor b. 1781 VA, who went on to become the White County Surveyor.
