A retired beautician and member of the Business and Professional Woman's Club and the Smithville Church of Christ, she was the daughter of the late Bethel M. and Laura Edwards Young and was preceded in death by her husband, Joe T. Young; and two sisters, Irene Smoot and Lila Sain. She is survived by two sons, Billy S. Young of Smithville and Edward C. Young of McMinnville; one brother, Dr. B.C. Smoot of McMinnville; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Services were held Sunday at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home in Smithville with Dan Gulley and Tim Woodward officiating. Medical pioneer dies at 86: Treatment came first, payment was secondary for Dr. Smoot Prominent local physician Dr. Bethel Campbell (B.C.) Smoot Sr. died Sunday at River Park Hospital, the facility he co-founded in 1972 with the late Dr. Thomas Frist and HCA group. He was 86 and had suffered from a lingering illness. Dr. Smoot was a general practitioner and surgeon in Warren County and the surrounding area, practicing medicine from 1937 until his retirement in 1976. Early in his practice he was associated with the Medical Clinic and Hospital, which he later co-owned with Dr. C.M. Clark and continued to operate until it closed in the mid-70s to make way for the new River Park Hospital. A wing of the hospital was later named in his honor. Dr. Smoot was known as a community doctor, often making house calls. He delivered an estimated 6,000 babies during his career. He was known in the community as the doctor who never kept records because he knew each of his patients by heart. "Dr. Smoot had an enormous impact on the community," said Dr. Ray Troop, who began working with Dr. Smoot in 1970. "He came along when there wasn't a lot of doctors. Back then the main thing they had to offer was themselves and reassurance. Dr. Smoot was in practice several years before penicillin came along." Dr. Troop pointed out his colleague worked night and day and was always available to his patients. "At one time, I'd say about 50 percent of his work was home visits," Troop said. "He would make house calls and do home deliveries. He probably delivered about half the people in this town." Smoot. Born Bethel Campbell Smoot in 1913, he was raised in Morrison and graduated from Morrison High School in 1931. His father agreed to help him through medical school - under one condition. The condition was in Smoot's treatment of patients, there would be no borderline as to who could pay and who couldn't. The senior Smoot's wish turned out to be a philosophy B.C. Dr. Smoot was a man who practiced medicine long before insurance companies controlled the way health care was provided, making frequent house calls and charging only a nominal fee - if anything at all. The patient's financial status was never a factor. He knew the patients that could pay would, and the ones who had no means didn't have to worry about it. His generous nature was just one of the qualities which made Dr. Smoot one of this community's great residents. The Hippocratic oath, taken by all doctors but often forgotten in today's world of insurance card first, medical treatment later, meant something to Dr. Smoot. A cornerstone of the medical community for almost 40 years, he experienced every aspect of the healing profession - delivering babies and performing surgeries for many generations. The standard price for an office visit during Smoot's early years of practice was between $2 and $5. While that fee was often negotiable, he very seldom charged handicapped patients. He had a special place in his heart for them. When Warren County needed funding for a training activity center, Dr. Smoot, as always, did his part. He offered the nursing quarters from what had been McMinnville Medical Clinic free of charge. Warren County Association for Retarded Citizens soon located in the building. In another touching story, Dr. Smoot gave a family with a Down's syndrome daughter so much encouragement, they named their newborn after Smoot's wife and daughter. The baby was named Jonnye for his wife and Kathleen for his daughter. In 1965, he became involved in the location and construction of Warren County General Hospital. In the hospital's formative years, he played a significant role in its advancement. Later, a wing at River Park Hospital bearing his name was dedicated in his honor. Dr. Smoot operated the Medical Clinic until 1970, at which time the potential for the new hospital made closing seem like a wise choice. He continued to practice medicine using the clinic as his office until retirement July 17, 1976. In his opinion, maintaining the Medical Clinic was his single biggest accomplishment and contribution to Warren County. His oftentimes caustic and gruff remarks to patient and friend alike brought to mind a top sergeant talking to a recruit, but underneath that crusty outward appearance was a caring individual who was determined to see his patient got the best treatment and attention available. Dr. Smoot was a truly dedicated physician with a life-long commitment to helping the well-being of Warren County's citizens. He gave health care to those in need when they couldn't make payment, and that was one of his greatest payments to the community. There won't ever be another one like Dr. Smoot.
