    2. You could also add the mtDNA test to the group. Gives some information on the female to female side of the family.

    3. Gerelene, the Smith DNA testing I did cost me $171.00 for the 25 marker test, but some DNA projects sometimes have reduced rates. The 12 marker test is less expensive, but it's always better to take the extended 25 marker test. Check with http://www.familytreeDNA.com to see if someone is testing for your surname. They will have the cost for the testing posted, or should have anyway... Can it detemine genetic ancestral origins in proportion, such as Celtic, English and German? Could the many people who think they are "part Indian" prove/disprove same by this testing? It really can not determine if Celtic, English and German, but can give you where like matches are found. They can determine Indian Blood. In Sept 2003 at a Conference in Orlando I spoke with one individual from Family Tree DNA on testing for Indian Blood. He said they had did a number of tests for it, but found only few. But did find several with African blood. A 12 marker match only means kinship if with same surname, or maybe an event outside of marriage if not same surname. A Smith cousin took DNA test and matched up on 12 markers with 94 individuals but only two were Smiths. D. Mitchell Jones http://www.dmitchelljones.org

    3. Clyde, If the first twelve markers in the DNA alleles match, it establishes proof of a genetic match, if I understand this correctly. If most or all of the additional 13 markers after that match, then there's a 99 percent chance of a recent common ancestor. My Rice family matches exactly in 24/25 markers to the other participants in Group 9 in the Rice DNA test group, whom I've proven via documentation to be direct descendants of Francis and Sarah (Womack) Rice of Prince Edward County. There is only one variation in ONE gene, the 464 gene, which is spread out over the last four alleles 22 through 25. For this reason, t is highly recommended that participants order the 25 marker test instead of the 12 marker test. I will use the Rice DNA results as an example. The results of the DNA testing on our Rice family there in White/DeKalb/Putnam Counties has RULED OUT ALL OTHER Rice families who were in Tennessee, genetically, with the exception of a James S. Rice who was in East TN and went to Alabama, who matches 11/12 on the first 12 loci alleles, but apparently doesn't match us at all on the other 13 markers. It seems this Francis Rice born 1711 is possibly the only MALE descendant of an earlier Francis Rice who died in Warwick County, Virginia in 1696, but we're not yet certain. The Edward Rice in Warwick County, VA on the 1704 Quit Rent role may have been his brother. That Francis had an adult son, also named Francis Rice, who administered his estate. So OUR Francis may have been Francis Rice 3rd.. I am totally sold on this technology. I do not yet know if the Lefevre family has tested through Family Tree DNA, but it would be something to look into. They have several names that are being tested, and folks can go to http://www.familytreeDNA.com to see if there is a DNA test group for their particular surname. 3. I'm passing this on to the DeKalb, Putnam and White County lists to see if anyone in the HERRIN/HERRON/HERREN families in the Upper Cumberland might be interested in participating in the "Herring" DNA project... This was probably the original spelling of "Herrin" etc... I've participated in DNA testing myself, and my Rice cousins have done the same, with remarkable results. I'm sold on this technology for genealogy, and I think our Herrin/Herron/ etc.. cousins would greatly benefit from it as well.
