The name Caney Fork came from all the wild cane (Bamboo) that grew along the river. Fork is branch of another river. It is the Caney Fork of The Cumberland River. I would like to know how Jones Fork off of Indian Creek in DeKalb County got its name. Tommy Webb and I have never been able to determine how it got its name. D. Does anyone know where the name Caney Fork came from? I'm trying to find out information about an Elizabeth Allen who married a Caney (first name unknown) and is found in the 1870 DeKalb County census living with her parents and daughter. Thanks, Claudia Allen
Ardis Taylor put out three Taylor Books over a lifetime of research. I've just posted his/her name and address. They may be able to sell you a copy or point you in the direction of someone who has them for sale. I have a copy of all three volumes. Too bad they are NOT indexed to any extent.
I don't know if they are still in print. There were three volumes printed. You can try this Ardis Taylor 13532 77th St. S.E. Lisbon, ND 58054-9473 701-427-5595

Are you sure this is my Isaac? Geeze! I am so confused! I haven't been able to find Isaac on any censuses and had thought that his father was John R. Taylor. Then I got the info from Chris Hawkins' website which had my branch descended from Barzele. What are your sources for this info, if you don't mind my asking? I see this name in my file, I don't know an awful lot about the TAYLORS, as most of my research came with help from others. I do have a Isaac G. TAYLOR son of Barzilla J. Hi--- I am a descendant of Isaac Joshua Taylor (b. 10/24/1863) and Elizabeth Phelps of Indian Creek, Dekalb Co., TN. His son, John Douglas Taylor (b. 7/15/1882 in White Bluff, Dickson Co., TN) remembers poling a raft across the Caney Fork River with his father for a living when he was a young man. Anyway, I have been working on this Taylor branch of genealogy and recently received information that Isaac was the son of Barzilla J. Taylor of Indian Creek, and the grandson of David Jacob Taylor of Smith Co. This line originated with Thomas Taylor who was born in 1637 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. Does any of this sound familiar? I would love to correspond with you regarding this family. Thanks, Angela
I believe they're at the LDS Library. I believe the author was Robert Taylor, a cousin. I know that an Isaac Taylor and I think James Taylor "chained" land (surveyed it) for several folks up in Overton County in the early 1800's, among them being a John Rice in old Smith County on roaring river (present-day Algood, Putnam County), and Elijah/ElishaChisholm/Chisum. I'm pretty sure these are the same Taylors who later wound up in White County on Taylor's Creek. They surveyed the Rice land in 1802, and it wasn't far from the land owned by Chisum. Curiously, both a John Rice and this same Chisum fellow lived pretty close to each other back in Hawkins County in the 1790's, foot of Bay's Mountain near the Sullivan County line. I am trying to find Alyce Adcock Lack. Before her marriage to Corder Lack of Falling Water (White Co) on Aug. 7, 1856, she lived in the household of David Turner & Maria Turner (Pinegar) in the 1850 census of Dekalb Co. of Dist. 7. Why? Was she an orphan? Which Adcock family did she belong to? Was she divorced from Corder Lack? He is in the Adcock cemetary without her! In the 1900 census of Dekalb she is the mom-in-law listed with the Johnson family whom her daughter Sophronia married into. Her grandaughter Sudie Clay Lack was my grandmother. Would like to find death certs. for Corder & Alyce. Please help. Thank you. [email protected]
The notes i have is from the Daniel and Comfort Pittman family. Dewey being in the third generation as the son of Marshall Cain Pitman and Lydia Martin. He had Good, Edna, Irbym and Connie as his brothers and sisters.
Joanne, I was going threw my Pitman papers today and i saw a Dewey Martin Pitman and i remember that i had seen something about that name on email. This is what i have from someone else researching Pittman, Pitman, Pitmon. Dewey Martin Pitman, born 5 February 1899 in Liberty, Dekalb Co. Tn: Died October 1982 in Liberty, Tn. Notes.. Lydia died shortly after giving birth to Dewey. His maternal Grandparents raised him. He may have been given their surname(martin) Good, Connie, and Fannie E. are in the household of David and Mary PITMAN(paternal grandparents in the 1900 census. I also have the rest of his family listed if this is who you are looking for.. Mary nell Paris
I'd like to get info on this bunch too! There apparently is a will for James Reynolds, I think in Smith County. His daughter Alcey married John Fisher III, grandson of old John Fisher of Warren County, TN the Revolutionary War veteran. John and Alcey's son Logan Gay Fisher of Putnam County was my ggg grandfather on my maternal grandmother's side of the family. He and his wife Martha Gregston Fisher are buried in the old Thomas cemetery near the Cookeville Boatdock Road area. I've never been there but would like to find it. There's a Driver cemetery up in Putnam County near Double Springs that isn't far from the Alex. Byers cemetery. This may be part of the same folks from DeKalb. This cemetery is just a tad bit above Baxter, which isn't far from Silver Point. My Jacob Grimes is buried at Alex. Byers, so I've been up there a few times. Will I would love to find land deed records, wills, etc...for all of these Reynolds boys you have mentioned. Logan and Martha were married in Smith County in 1853. Their daughter Alice C. Fisher married Charles Smith Jr. in DeKalb County, TN in 1874. Their daughter was Oma Green Smith (1880-1933) who married James Lawson Steele (1879-1919) in DeKalb on May 8, 1901. James L. and Oma Green (Smith) Steele were the parents of my maternal grandmother, Mary Dell Steele (1906-1987) wife of William Logan Rice (1904-1981), and they were married in Putnam County on March 23, 1926. From what I gather, Martha (Gay) Reynolds was descended from old Henry Gay of Isle of Wright, Virginia, so in all likelihood, that is also where our Reynolds families resided. Wake County is a strong possibility as well, since a lot of the Tidewater Virginians did move through Nansemond into Chowan, Perquimans, Gates Counties, etc.. and settled in Wake and surrounding counties. My wife's Copelands originated in Isle of Wright and wound up in Chowan and Perquimans and Pasquotank counties, N.C. Her Speights were also in Wake County, N.C. from Nansemond Co VA, and Perquimans and Gates Counties, N.C.
