Teri, William Bozarth was the son of Levi Bozarth and Sarah Pierce, who were married 1802 in Kentucky. William married probably about 1834 to Nancy Allen Burton, dau. of Henry Burton and Mary Williams Burton. Levi Bozarth had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Alexander (or Nathaniel?) Steele, and they had a son named Levi Bozarth Steele who married in DeKalb County about 1853. Alexander (Nathaniel?) and Elizabeth Steele moved up to Sumner County, TN by 1853 but I have no idea where they went from there. I'd like to find out. Our Bozarths tie in to the family of Benjamin Borden Sr., and he is our common ancestor with Lizzie "took an axe...." Borden. It was John Bozarth who married Innocent Borden, I believe either in New Jersey or Virginia. I'm thinking they were Levi Bozarth's grandparents. His parents were Joseph Bozarth and Elizabeth. Some say she was a Smith. Sarah Pierce was the daughter of William Pierce, and she was born in South Carolina. She married Levi Bozarth I believe in Nelson County, KY. Hope this helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard & Teri Lindsay" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 21, 2002 9:00 AM Subject: [TNDEKALB] Roll Call: BOZARTH, PIERCE > My research interests are: William BOZARTH, d-1880 in Mine Lick; His wife > Sally PIERCE. I am looking for information on Joshua D. Phillips, he married Mary E. Johnson in Dekalb.County, Tn. I am alos looking for information on his father, he was Martin Phillips and his Mother was Sarah.
I am descended from William Bozarth and Nancy Burton. She was the daughter of Henry Burton and Mary Williams. Their daughter Mary Jane Bozarth was born in April 1838. Her first husband was George Smith, whom she married in DeKalb County in 1856. Her second husband was James Knox Polk Lewis, whom she married in 1863. In 1872, she married James Steele, son of William Steele and Sissy McDole, in DeKalb County. Their children included: 1, Henry Levi Steele born about 1874, who married Amanda Jane Smith about 1894. She died 1943 in Roane County, TN. Henry died in Richmond, Indiana in 1959. 2, Feby Francis Steele - married James Henry Ausutin, and moved out of state. I haven't found anything else on her. They married about 1907 in Putnam County. 3. James Lawson Steele (my great-grandfather) born July 1879. Married Oma Green Smith, dau. of Charles Smith Jr. and Alice C. Fisher, May 8, 1901 in DeKalb County (interestingly, after Alice Fisher died, Charles married Oma Steele, James', Frances's, and Henry's sister, about 1895 in Dekalb). 4. Oma Steele - married Charles Smith Jr. She died about 1945 and is buried in Palmer Cemetery, Silver Point. James Lawson Steele was epileptic, and was sent to the mental hospital (Central State) in Nashville, where he died July 23, 1919 at the age of 40. Back then, they locked epileptics up as "insane". I believe this was inherited from the Bozarths or Burtons, as Phebe Bozarth, according to the 1880 or 1900 census, suffered "fits". Puckett, have you found any other reference to the Bozarth family suffering from epilepsy? Anyway....Mary Jane (Bozarth) Smith-Lewis-Steele died in 1923 or 1924, and is buried at Palmer Cemetery in Silver Point next to her husband, who's grave is unmarked. He died between 1900 and 1908, and I've not found anything to tell me exactly what year James Steele died. Hope this helps! Some place I have seen information about the Turner brothers who married the Turney sisters. It gave another brother, Jeremiah Turner who married a Nancy Hancock. Does anyone have further information about this? Carolyn
Cathy, Unfortunately, I don't have a Sarah. My Steele line is via my GGG grandmother, Mary "Polly" Steele (abt. 1809-18 Nov 1889) who married Eli LaFever (abt 1803-10 Sep 1886). I have as Mary's parents, John Edward (or Alexander) Steele (1786 VA-Aug 1871 DeKalb), m. first Jane Compton (d. 1844), second Mahala Goodman, and Mary's siblings as Matilda, Nancy Jane and William (via Jane - I list no children via Mahala). I then have Andrew Steele (abt 1755-?) and Martha Buchanan (1761-1803) as the next line up, with two sons, Alexander and John Edward (who my records indicate may have also been named Alexander -maybe the same guy but I don't know). This Alexander (b. 1787), I have married to Lucy Compton who may have been a sister to Jane. Alex's and Lucy's daughter Celia Afton (or Ann) Steele, also married into my LaFever line. I haven't tried to trace/find some of the descendents of these other Steele descendents so far, so if you have any further info on your Sara's parents/siblings, I'll continue to look. Hi Betty, Thank you so much for this. I really do appreciate it. My grandmother's bible records are on the DeKalb Co. Internet Page. This was the oldest son, and she was the youngest, so I guess she did not know much about him. I guess he moved out of DeKalb Co. She had some marriage records but she did not have his in her Bible. I wonder if there is a Warren Co. Marriage book that might cover them. I really do appreciate your help. You are a great help to me. Amos WATSON m. Clementine BERRYHILL in Dekalb County on 11 August 1883. Clementine died approx. 1906 in childbirth and I believe may be buried in White County, TN. Amos' mother was Cindy or Cinda WATSON; this was probably her maiden name. She married a VAUGHN (VAUGHAN) but divorced him. Amos & Clementine found in 1900 census living in White County with children John, Hassie, Robert, Ethel, Mattie Bell, Albert, Amos. Riley born later in 1900 or 1901. When Clemie died in 1906, Amos farmed out the children to family, friends, neighbors and he left for Oklahoma or Texas; nothing more is known about Amos. I'm looking for any information on these families. Would love to know Cindy's parents and Clementine's parents, supposedly all born in Tennessee. Thanks so much, Sheryl Mullins Watson [email protected]

Dear List Members, We are entering into the last 24 hours of our Roll Call. Remember, at 8:00 pm, Mountain Standard time, Sunday, April 21, it is over. Please respect this time and DO NOT put Roll Call in the subject line after it. I will send out an announcement when the time comes, so you will know. I appreciate how each of you shared your information and surnames and I especially appreciate how smoothly this Roll Call went. If you missed all the fun you can review the message by going to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ type in the list name and go to April. For those of you with very sore delete fingers, I know how you feel. Thinking of putting mine in a sling for a while. ;) Kathleen Burnett List Mom
