The two Braswell boys mentioned in the February 1900 "Liberty Herald" article were Herschel L. Braswell and Charles ("Charley") Braswell. They were the sons of Leroy ("Lee") Braswell of Dry Creek and his young second wife, Lucinda Bray. Herschel's and Charley's older sister was Frances Ellen ("Ellie") Braswell (my great-grandmother) who married William L.D. Fuston of Dry Creek. I remember hearing my grandparents talk about Herschel defending his brother Charley who was killed. While Herschel may have had some notoriety in his youth [he is the subject of another "Liberty Herald" story], I take exception with the writer who said "These Braswells must have been pretty rough people..." Leroy Braswell (abt 1810 - 1882, son of Sampson Braswell and Priscilla Williams) was first married to Mary Sellers of Dry Creek and produced several children by that union. Following Mary's death, he remarried at age 55 to a 25 year old woman from Warren County, Lucinda Bray. Their daughter "Ellie" was born in 1867 and Herschel was born in 1877. Cheryl, Check with the TN Supreme Court records in Nashville. Usually murder convictions were appealed to the Supreme Court as well as other state crimes at the time. This was true with the Teek and Joe Braswell who were hanged in Cookeville for the murder of two Allison brothers about 1877, and also for two other murders that occurred about 1900 and 1901. I have a letter written by William A. Rice, my great-grandfather, about this. This letter was written to his brother, John H. Rice, of Red Boiling Springs, Macon County, TN at about the time frame you mention. He says...... "......Well John, I weigh 162 lbs this winter more than I ever weighed before in my life. I have been selling medicine this fall & winter and have been taking medicine and it has built me up and made a new man out of me. The medicine I have been selling is called Brown Herb Tablets. I will send you some of them if you want them. Leitha (Leitha Catherine Judd Rice-Hickey 1877-1941) has ben taking them she always was a little scrawny thing till this weinter and she will weigh 150 now. Jimm Brassell (Braswell) and his two oldest boys starts to Nashville a Tuesday to attend the Supreme Court and abide its decision for the murder of Giles Bradford. A few years ago they had two trials in the Circuit Court being sentenced the first time to 15 years in the Penentiary the second time 10 years. Also White Maxwell and Jordan Vaughn goes at the same time to answer the charge or wait the decision of the Supreme Court for the murder of John B.Bradford, Giles Bradford's brother. These are boys of the old man Giles Bradford. Also Dent Thomas goes on in April for defrauding the Government. He was Post Master at Pine Fork. I heard from Cinda (Lucinda E. Rice 1861-1934, wife of John Denton Brown. They moved to McMinnville by 1908, when John died there. Their family is buried at Faulkner Cemetery) a few days ago, they was all well. I hant heard from Sarah (Sarah C. Rice, wife of Jesse Thomas. She died Rhea County 1937) in some time. Leitha said tell Sopha (Sophia Lee Slate 1845-1920, wife of John H. Rice) and Mary (John's daughter) to write to her and she will answer. Well Ruphus (Rufus Edward Rice, John's son) you ought to have been out here in time of the snow to help me caught Rabbits. I caught two out of one tree this snow and allso the other little snow before this. John Sliger went a hunting the other day and caught three rabbits and one squirrel and 23 possums and saidit was not much of a day for Possums either. So I will close.Write soon and fail not. Yours Truly, William A. Rice Burton, TN" Notes I have: Giles Bradford was murdered on January 1, 1898, as shown in the indictment of James Cloy, and Claude Braswell. John B. Bradford was murdered January 15, 1901, as shown in the indictment of Jordan Vaughn and Whitt Maxwell. Putnam County records show that Isaac Denton Thomas was postmaster at Pine Fork from February 21, 1901 until Jonathan L. Ensor replaced him on April 21, 1902. This letter was probably written during the winter of 1902/1903. These Braswell's must have been pretty rough people, as Joe and Teek Braswell were hanged for murder about 1877 on Billy Goat Hill in Cookeville, and are buried pretty close to the Baxter Elementary School. Cousin Will, James Lefever (1816-1896) m. Nancy Jane Steele about 1833 in then White Co. Nancy died prior to James' second marriage to Mary Ann (Polly) Boyd 28Jan1857 by Rev. Levi Perkins, White Co. All 12 children were Nancy's. Their daughter Charlotte /Carlotta/Lottie born 1834. died 1891. Married (1) William R. or James Nash (2) Rev. Lewis Howell. Rev. Howell was first married to Jerasha Duncan 19Dec1848, White Co.. They lived on the Falling Water near the Perkins Cemetery. James is in the White Co. Census with wife Polly in 1860, 1870,1880. The Steeles came fro Montgomery Co.,VA. I'm not sure of Nancy James' parents. I have quite a bit of information on the Steels but would have to study it some more. James' brother Andrew Lefever (and your ancestor) married Celia Steele, dau. of Alexander Steele and Lucy Compton. Their bro. I am enjoying the old Dekalb Co. newspapers too. I read a bit of it every day. It's good to see more than just Liberty. There were a lot of districts & other communities of people. I'm trying to find the parents of Charlotta/Charlotte LaFever, James and Nancy (Steele) LaFever in the 1860 census. Charlotte is said to have married a William Nash, who died and she then married Lewis Howell after the death of his first wife, Jerusha Duncan Howell. Can anyone help me figure out where James and Nancy's family were in 1860? I cannot find them in White County. Nancy was a daughter of old John Steele, so they're probably in 1860 DeKalb County census. Thanks, Will
