It so happens my 3 great grandfather signed up in Tennessee to be part of the 7th Kansas Cavalry for the Union. It would be worth your while to check which Union forces had sign-ups in Tennessee. By the way, he was from Henderson county, but married in Decatur county in 1865, a year after he mustered out. Several Union regiments were formed in Tennessee. My gr grandfather was mustered into Co A, 7th. Tenn Calvary, U.S. Army August 20, 1862 in Jackson, Tennessee. Your Smith could have bee in this one, but it is not the only Union regiment from Tennessee. Maybe he was from Decatur County instead of the town of Decatur.
