I found a tip on rootsweb review about using public information to search for owners of properties. Below is website of State of Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury, Real Estate Assessment Data. I tried it, searching surnames I research in Decatur Co. TN. The date when the property was sold is available, deed book, property value, when sold, etc. The information appears not to go back to real early days, but then I haven't tried old addresses of my ancestors yet.
