Decatur County Bank, Decaturville, TN On the below website of The Tennessee Bankers Association is a photograph of: MR. JAMES A. ENGLAND current Chairman/CEO/President of Decatur County Bank, Decaturville. http://www.tnbankers.org/about.htm In a telephone conversation with staff member of a local funeral home in Decaturville, the staff member said it was her understanding that Mr. England and some of his staff at the bank had used old deeds to do a history (could be a diagram) of early downtown Decaturville. If there was such a history, maybe Mr. England would allow the host of Decatur County website to include on the website. Would appreciate any information about this. Thank you. Linda

Unfortunately at this point I do not have any information to help you. Jackson is such a common name but it is interesting yours and mine are in the same place, same time. William Jackson b 1797 and his sister Rebecca b 1810 were born in North Carolina. They moved to Perry County around 1830. William married Charlotte Kerus and had 2 sons prior to moving to Tenn. Rebecca married Thomas John Carter. He died in a well cave in near Linden Sep 1833. Their only child was born in Dec 1833 near Lindon. Rebecca remarried about 1836 to John Sullivan. They had 3 children prior to moving to Missouri about 1843. Linden is on the east side of the Tennessee River. In 1845 the west side became Decatur county. There was a William Jackson and a John Sullivan living on the west side in 1837 and I believe both voted for the division of the counties. So many of the records were lost in the fire of 1865. But who knows maybe someday we will find the missing links. Your James could be a brother to my William and Rebecca. I'm not sure when North and South Carolina became 2 states. Any way lets keep in touch. Janet

This book is like similar books produced by history/genealogy societies in counties in all states of our country. A few people take on an enormous task with very little help. These people are not certified genealogists or professors with history degrees. Most have never done genealogical research in state archives or participated in the rigorous research required by some lineage societies. These few people are just regular folks who still live in the county or near to it and have a great love and pride for the people who have lived in that county and the events which have occurred there over the years. The Decatur County book was a project which took about a year. The family articles are as good as what was submitted. Some family names are not included because no one of that family submitted information. My book is open to the first 2 pages in the family section - James and Rozina Aaron born ca 1805; George W. Adair came with his parents form Giles County in 1854; William M. Adams born 1869; Gary L. Adkisson born 1952; Edgar C. Akin born 1912; John F. Akin born 1836; James E. Akin born 1868; William V. Akin born 1785; John Akins, Sr. a Revolutionary soldier; Charles Alexander born 1820; Lewis Goff arrived in Decatur County by 1850. The information may be of little value to someone who has researched a number of years on a particular family and so already knows the same information, but it could be a gold mine to someone just starting a new family line! I am not sure where my mind was when I answered Tom Goodman. I read the A. B. C. D. as initials. A more fair answer would be yes on Crawley. I was looking forsomeone named B. Crawley born in the nineteenth century. There are two articles mentioning Crawleys in the nineteenth century. Tom Good I will email scanned copies in a few minutes. David
A great answer & a great picture, David! Thanks, Tom Goodman
l. Is it a history book? No. It is more a vanity publication. The publisher talks some local organization, in this case the Decatur County Historical Society, into being responsible for getting material. Most people submit a picture of their immediate family and a family history and purchase copies. What history is available is various odds and ends submitted by various people, and the quality varies extremely. The Bath Springs article states that it was settled in the late 1700s (it was not settled until about 1819-1820) and that the first ferry to Wayne County was the "Carivalle Ferry" (it was the Carrollville). 2. How far back in years? Most people do not know their families beyond grandparents or great-grandparents they knew personally, though it is relatively easy to trace families back to the civil war period. So, in the history, many familes are not taken back earlier than the 20th century, and most of the rest go back only to the Civil War period. Very few family histories go back earlier. There is almost nothing about the history of or life in Decatur County in the nineteenth. The discussion of the history of Perryville begins in the 1920s, when Perryville was a century old. There is no discussion of ninteenth century merchants, agriculture, or industries. 3. Are there mentioned A. Goodman NO B. Crawley NO (no B. Crawley born before the 20th century is mentioned; an item by Mary Jean Johnson Good mentions that the family came from Barren Co., KY) C. Treece NO D. Smothers NO David
Could someone tell me a bit about the History & Families Book mentioned on this site. l. Is it a history book? 2. How far back in years? 3. Are there mentioned A. Goodman B. Crawley C. Treece D. Smothers Thank you, Tom Goodman
