Surnames: Lancaster Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JeB.2ACE/627.1.1 Message Board Post: Thanks, Linda, After I posted I found also on www.topozone.com, Pleasant Grove Church to be located at the current site of Turman Creek Baptist church. It appears that after the original Pleasant Grove School burned that a new building was built that was used as the Turman Creek Church and also as a school. I also saw the article about Dr. Brooks donating land for the Three Way School. The only remaining mystery is why is the school at Three Way labeled as "Lancaster School" on the www.topozone.com map. It may just be a mistake that was made on the topo map that was done for this area. What I have on the Pleasant Grove School is posted at http://www.tnyesterday.com/yesterday_decatur/pleasant_grove/pleasant_grove.htm I am interested in any additional information that anyone has on this school. thanks, Jerry

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JeB.2ACE/627.1 Message Board Post: Jerry, I looked for year 1911 on microfilm of Decatur County Herald newspaper. As luck would have it, the whole year of 1911 is missing. I thought I might find something about the Pleasant Grove School fire. I just happen to have this microfilm at my local Mormon library on loan from Mormon FHL, Salt Lake. I keep renewing, they let me do it for free now and have had access to this microfillm for over 2 years now. I saw you mentioned "Three Way" and I wanted to tell you that there is a small piece about a school at Three Way on page 20 of History of Decatur County TN, published 1996. It's at the bottom of the page, 1st column, and continues into 2nd column. It said, 1913, Dr. Brooks donated land for new school. I had the thought that maybe Dr. Brooks bought land where the Pleasant Grove School used to be after it burned. If you don't have this book, let me know and I will post what it says. I will keep your request with me and will keep a lookout for information about Pleasant Grove School and/or Lancaster school as I go through microfilms of Decatur County Herald. I have found the Decatur County Herald often has information about schools, teachers, which students were boarding and at whose home they were boarding. Linda Re: Your Request Does anyone have any information on the Pleasant Grove School? The land is supposed to have been donated by David Lancaster. The school was also know as Lancaster School. The building burned in 1911. www.tropozone.com shows the Lancaster School to be located at "Three Way" near Bath Springs. I am looking for any history that anyone has on this school.

    1. Re: [TNDECATU] Nancy Allen GIBSON burial place
    2. Jerry, You might consider getting microfilm of Decatur Co TN "Herald" newspaper for year 1912 and reviewing that year for death of your ancestor. It might have been called the "Decaturville Herald" during 1912, don't have history of name changeover handy. Sometimes deaths were mentioned under the Personal Column. If I were you, I would be checking the newspaper for 1912. Check with Tennessee State Library, Nashville, TN, or on www.familysearch.com doing place search to see if microfilm is available for that year and can be rented from Mormon FHL in Salt Lake City through your local Mormon Library. There is a charge to order from FHL or around $3.75. You can order some microfilms through your local library from TSL. There is a charge. Another choice, would be to check for a volunteer on website of random acts of genealogical kindness (http://www.rogk.org) to see if a volunteer is doing lookups at Tennessee State Library in Nashville and can check death index and newspaper. You can also write or email Tennessee State Library and Archives to ask if they will look up in "Herald" newspaper for death of a person, but you need exact date of death for TSL to do that. It costs anywere between $10-$15. Also, check death index of 1912 on TSL website: http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/death2.htm <A HREF="http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/death2.htm">Index to Tennessee Death Records 1908-1912</A> I suppose you checked the files of Christian Advocate, Methodist newspaper transcribed by Jonathan Smith, online. If family was a Methodist, death dates of people were often mentioned in church publication. Go to www.google.com to search for Christian Advocate or Jonathan Smith. Even death notices of non Methodists were sometimes included. Another thought is to ask volunteers in Tennessee Room at Jackson/Madison Co. TN library to check newspapers of 1912.......but you need month and date to have them do lookup. Use google.com, to find Jackson/Madison Co. TN library. Deaths in Decatur Co. TN were sometimes mentioned in newspapers of Jackson, TN. Since you are at a brickwall, nothing to loose by exploring remote resources. FROM YOUR EMAIL: My great aunt Nancy "Nannie" Allen was born in Madison County, TN in 1859 and died in Decatur Co., TN in 1912.  In 1891 she married Mitchell Roger "Mitch" Gibson in Decatur Co., who survived her and whose burial place I also do not know

    3. My great aunt Nancy "Nannie" Allen was born in Madison County, TN in 1859 and died in Decatur Co., TN in 1912. In 1891 she married Mitchell Roger "Mitch" Gibson in Decatur Co., who survived her and whose burial place I also do not know. Since my family is one of those with the "tradition" of using fieldstones as headstones (a tradition of "can't afford it right now, but will get around to it if I ever get the money"), I have been unable to find her burial place The Nannie A. Gibson in the Gibson cemetery with no headstone appears to have come later than my Nannie Allen Gibson. I wonder if anyone is familiar with the person buried there and can confirm the information on the cemetery site as it relates to this particular grave. --Jerry Allen

    2. Tom, re: "and I will ask them to help me with the TSL in Nashville. I have never done that, but I have known about it. Thanks,Tom Goodman" It's easy to do. You do have to pay and as I recall, it takes 2-3 weeks for items to come in. Should also tell you I heard when I spoke to someone at funeral home in Decaturville that MR. JAMES ENGLAND, for lack of better word head man at Bank of Decatur Co. TN, supposedly had bank staff do location map of downtown Decaturville, using old deeds. Been meaning to write Mr. England, another one of those things on my long "to do" list. You know how it goes. best regards, Linda FULLER Long, Yorba Linda, CA but born in Lexington, Henderson Co. TN

    1. website TN State Library
    2. FYI, new look coming to Tennessee State Library website. Look for the revised TSLA web site to launch on May 17, 2005. There's a new look coming to the web site of the Tennessee State Library and Archives. We will soon be unveiling a redesigned web site for our users. Some of the main characteristics of the newly designed web site: *A simplified URL, making the TSLA web address easier to remember. *A consistent format, with an appearance designed to maximize accessibility and ease of use. *An organization arranged by subject content, rather than by TSLA departments. *A set of common features on all of the pages -- links to contact information, a link to the TSLA online catalog, a site map, and a box to search the TSLA web site.   The redesigned TSLA site will have some new features, including: *A State Historian's page. *A rotating TSLA slide show, showcasing our photographic collection. *Downloadable forms for ordering materials and services. *A"How do I find?" button, with answers to the most frequently asked questions received by Public Services. *Expansion of the section on Government Documents, both state and national. *Key links to the Tennessee Blue Book and the Tennessee Encyclopedia, as well as a page of links to other sites, all of them government, professional associations, or non-profit sites.   -- Edwin S. Gleaves State Librarian and Archivist

    1. 5000 photographs DeCoTn
    2. Re: 5,000 photographs of Decatur Co. TN Tom, you might find the home you seek on the below microfilms at Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville. Be advised there is NO INDEX for any of the microfilms. I recall microfilm 20-3 of Record Group 189 was mostly Decaturville. I had to go back and search archives of this mail list on rootsweb to find my original posting about the 5,000 photographs. Not only were there photographs of homes, buildings, schools, churches, but sometimes information would be mentioned, i.e., the family left Parsons and moved to Decaturville, who owned the home, who built it, when it was built, how big, floor plans, who was current owner, and so on. Excerpts from messages on 2003 TNDECATU-L mail list: photographs taken by MARY V. MOORE, who undertook the job of photographing the Decatur Co. area as part of the 1986 statewide project of photographing structures over 50 years old in Tennessee. 5,000 photographs of more than 1700 structures, plus a few cemeteries. FROM LIBRARIAN AT TENNESSEE STATE LIBRARY & ARCHIVES: Record Group 189 (County Architectural Surveys by the Tennessee Historical Commission).  Here at TSLA, we have only the microfilmed photographs and records, and you are welcome to borrow the Decatur Co. rolls through interlibrary loan (ILL). Ask your librarian to request: RG 189 (County Architectural Surveys), Microfilm Rolls 20-1, 20-2, 20-3, and 20-4. For more detailed instructions on borrowing through interlibrary loan: http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/mailill.htm These microfilms are well worth the time it takes go through them, but one needs a lot of patience. Linda Thanks, Linda, for the site. You tried! But the aerial shot of Decaturvile might have been Tim-buck-too. MapQuest may call them aerial views, but the views look a lot like the moon's surface! I was hoping to see a house or houses I once lived in  and about Decaturville until I was  10 years old
