Renea, I haven't had a chance to look at Perry Co. marriage records yet, but that does sound probable. I'm sure Dutton and Miriam (Myriam) married there. I recently purchased Tennessee Land Grants, H-Hz and sent all the Hill grants in Decatur, Perry and Henderson Cos. to Decatur Co. Archives. I don't think Mike has posted them yet, he said he had another project in the works but did post some more deeds I had submitted. I have ordered the grants for L and will get those for R next but think that will be all, there are so many records I need and this town is so small, the FHC is very small too. I hope to get to Salt Lake City eventually for a few days. If you could just remind people that the Archives are available and can be very helpful, it might remind them to submit records there too. Just wondering where the nearest family history center was to Decatur county? Amy
Betty, My GG-Grand father married a Rebbeca Blackwell from the Henderson Co. area around 1870. I have not had much luck finding anything on her. I have not been able to look at an 1870 census for this county, so not sure of her birth year or the exact year she and Aaron Pierce married. Their first child was brn. 1874 (James Richard Pierce). Her husband Aaron Pierce was brn. 1842. Family states Rebbeca had two brothers, James and Granger? She died late 1880`s and is buried in Roellen, a small town close to Dyersburg TN. Do you have a Rebecca or her two brothers in your data? I would love to find something on her. My search is mainly with Pearce/Pierce, but she has been such a mystery! Thank-you for your time. Hi Sharon, There's not been much / any discussion yet. I ran across an article about the Underground Railroad activity in Henderson Co. It was the first I had read, although knowing a large number of the county was pro - Union, it was not surprising. The article in particular named Asa Hays as a participant. I was interested in whether there were any other families that were known of who were also participants in the underground RR. What I shared about my relative was told to my mom by my grandmother as she had heard it from her grandfather and is all I know. My mom might have more details. To me, all the stories are the meat to fill in our family tree skeletons. TNGenWeb 's Decatur Co has moved. We are now located at http://www.netease.net/decatur/. I have added a small amount of information and queries have been upated. Thanks to NetEase for donating the space for our use. I will now be able to upload myself which will make it much easier to change and add information. Hi, Just came into some info that indicates Asa's house may have been a station on the Underground RR . Because of a run in one of my ancestors had ( he was literally tarred and feathered and ridden on a rail in Henderson Co because he was a Union sympathizer ) , I am very curious about this I didn't know we had any underground activity going on in the Henderson / Decatur Co area. Do you know about this ? Renea At 09:42 PM 4/19/98 -0500, you wrote: >I've collected some information. Phyllis, Maybe a marriage for Jane to the Doherty can be found in Perry Co. The land may have come into the Hill family as a land grant - have you ever checked grants for Hills? Thanks, Renea, I think Dutton Hill and Jane Doherty must have been brother and sister. Dutton's wife was Miriam Lassiter, according to a death certificate in my possession. The person who furnished the info was a grandson of Dutton and his parents lived with him in their last years. He tried to help me once but was too ill to keep up the corresondence. Hi Renea, You mentioned J.L. Gulledge on the 1880 census. This is my ggreat uncle James Lane, wife Mary Ann Taylor Gulledge and children, Charles and Sarah Elizabeth. You also mentioned 4 other Gulledges listed on the same census page. Would it be too much trouble to get their names? Thanks, LuAnn

We could be talking about the same Martha Gibson, but got another question for you (or anyone else). Who is John Lane Gulledge's parents? The Gulledges are alot like the Hills, same names, different combinations used over and over again. Bet they never realized how difficult this would make our jobs. Oh well....I have a James Lane Gulledge in my tree and he has a brother named John. Their is a John Gulledge buried next to Linda Ann Quinn in Gibson Cemetery. Since you got info on the Quinns maybe you can help me straighten this out. Thanks LuAnn

Don't forget when you're looking at families who lived in early Decatur to research the Perry Co records also since Decatur Co came from Perry Co. Also, many families crossed back and forth over the river after the establishment of Decatur Co. I have a family that was in Decatur Co in 1860's then moved over to Perry Co, along with some , but not all the grown children.
