    3. Bessie, There is a Sallie Ricketts Shelton buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Henderson Co. She was later married to a John Tom Shelton; her dates are 1859-1941. I don't know who his first wife was, or what became of her. Thomas had another son, John Wesley, who was born in 1831 and was already out of the house by 1850. I, for one committee member, was exhausted after 6 weeks of final preparations and had to come right home to finish preparations for a family reunion the following weekend. Had to rest a little. DCH was grand. I think that I speak for all who attended in saying that everyone had a good time. There were folks from TN, KY, AR, MS, OH, and as far away as Washington State.....to name a few. The attendance was about 60 which was a little down from the previous year....but the rest of us made up for those absent!!! There was laughing...story telling....kidding....visiting....exchanging information....making new friends.....renewing old friendships that were started last year.....it was like a great big family reunion. One first time attendee went away saying that she felt like she was leaving family! What a testimony! This year's workshops were a terrific addition....jan had EVERYONE acting really crazy with her Appalachian storytelling....Ranger Jobe came from Ft. Donelson and gave us alot of information on the battles of Ft. Henry, Ft. Donelson, Dover, and Johnsonville. He answered questions as long as they were asked.....M.T. talked to us about surviving in the 'old days'.....Mr. Buchanan taught us how log cabins were built and brought examples of some of the old tools.....Mattie Childers entertained us royally with her Appalachian stories...then jan finished up with a workshop for prospective list owners... Oh the food....that's another story....on Saturday night for the banquet we had southern-fried catfish, fried okra, white beans, slaw, potato salad, key-lime pie....it was all mouth-watering good.....don't think anyone went away hungry... As for the weather...it was HOT in Tennessee...but that is to be expected....with the exception of one short shower on Saturday morning, the skies were blue with not a cloud in sight....there was a pretty good breeze at night....I think that all who wanted to go cemetery-tromping got to without difficulty.... Most of the area historical/genealogical societies took part at one time or the other. All the area libraries were open and had volunteers on hand to help out. I think it would be fair to say that everyone found something....a new cousin/friend, a cemetery, a grave, a marriage certificate, a missing date....something to aid in their search..... Don Simmons was present with his books for the entire event. He was a virtual treasure trove of information for many lucky researchers. Well, I have rambled enough.....hope this helps....I'll be glad to attempt to answer any questions... Have a great weekend! 2. I am seeking information about Benjamin Taylor and his descendents/ancestors. He was married to Frances Caudle, daughter of Absalom Caudle, Jr. and Mary Haney Caudle, daughter of Hezekiah Haney. She was born in Anson Co., NC in 1829, and died about 1880 in Decatur Co. In the 1870 census of Decatur Co, the children of Benjamin and Frances were listed as Martha J., 19, Jesse M. 17, James H. 15, Emily B. 12, Fredonia C., 9, Benjamin, 6 and Rebecca E., 3 months. The oldest child, Mary was not listed. She had already left home. The youngest child, Jonas, was born after 1870. I believe that their daughter Emily B. was my gggrandmother. She was born 7/13/1858, and died in January, 1901. She is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery listed under "other cemeteries of interest" on the Decatur Co. cemeteries page, along with 2 of her children. 3. I asked this question before on the Tennessee list and couldn't remember exactly so I seached the archives and this is what I found: [Bastardy Bonds were devised to protect the counties from being responsible for the support of illegitimate children. Warrants were issued to unmarried mothers to appear in court to be questioned and asked the name of the child's father. The named father was also brought to court and required to post a bond. If the woman refused to name the father, she was responsible for posting the bond. If she refused to post bond or name the father, she would be sent to jail. Recording of Bastardy Bonds can be found in county court minutes.] Happy 4th of July! 3. Karen, mom and I have just returned this late afternoon from a research trip to Raleigh, NC. I know she has not gotten on her computer to check email and probably will not tomorrow. So, I'll answer for her and later she may add her thoughts. Mom ( Barbara) was NOT saying that Cozette was part of Bible Hill. They are separate communities. In a northeast direction from Bible Hill, one would reach Jeannette first and then Cozette. Are you looking for the burial place of the daughter of Elizabeth and Isaac? Do you know where Cherokee Heights Road is? Although not the same communities, Bible Hill, Cozette, and Jeannette are not far from each other.
