Hi Folks, Looking for ANY info on Hatchetts of Henderson county,Tn. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thank Bessie
As to the school for which G. H. buck signed his name to a teaching contract, my best bet would be Shady Hill, or at least one of the nearby small schools which was later consolidated into Shady Hill. I do not know if there was a school at Mt. Gilead Church in the nineteenth century. If so, that be the best bet location. G. H. Buck is buried in the cemetery there about 2 miles south of Shady Hill. A. H. Fuller also taught at Beech River school north of Lexington, see http://www.henderson-lea.hc.k12tn.net/donahue/he-stuff/school.htm David
Does anyone know how long G. H. Buck was a director of schools, district 32, in Henderson Co. TN? Mr. Buck signed his name out to the side of Directors on a contract with my grandfather, A. H. Fuller. It was a teacher's contract for the year 1896. My grandfather was to teach at School #1, District 32, Henderson Co. TN. The salary was $25 per month. That's right, PER MONTH. Imagine trying to live on $25 per month today. Is there anyway to find out what school was designated as School #1? Thank you for your help. Linda Fuller Long
The East Tennessee Historical Society is unveiling a new family heritage program, Civil War Families of Tennessee. Civil War Families of Tennessee (CWFT) seeks to identify and honor the sacrifices of the valiant soldiers on both sides of the conflict. This lineage program will link current descendants with their Civil War ancestors, encourage new research, and combine the experiences of thousands of individuals and families to tell more fully the story of the Civil War in Tennessee. If you are a direct or collateral descendant of any individual who served in Tennessee during the Civil War-Union or Confederate-you are eligible for membership in CWFT. Service may have been in either a Tennessee unit or any non-Tennessee unit which was active in the state. Membership is also open through an ancestor who served elsewhere but lived in Tennessee either before, during, or after the war. In order to recognize the service of the many young men who died unwed and without children, CWFT offers membership through collateral descent also. Like its sister program, First Families of Tennessee, CWFT applications and membership files will be housed in the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection (Knoxville, Tennessee) of the Knox County Public Library System where together the two projects will provide an unparalleled resource for family and historical research in the Volunteer State. CWFT members will receive a handsome certificate with the names of the applicant and the ancestor, along with the name of the ancestor's company and regiment. A roster of the members and their ancestors will eventually be published in book form. CWFT members will also be recognized at a grand reunion to be hosted by the East Tennessee Historical Society. For additional information about the Civil War Families of Tennessee project, including a downloadable application form, please visit the ETHS web site at www.east-tennessee-history.org. Anyone unable to download a form may request an application form by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to: Civil War Families of Tennessee c/o ETHS PO Box 1629 Knoxville, TN 37901-1629 Additional questions about the new CWFT project may also be addressed to [email protected] (Please note that ETHS does not provide email-based research assistance at this time.) The East Tennessee Historical Society, founded in 1834, is one of the oldest cultural institutions in the state of Tennessee. ETHS, a non-profit organization headquartered in Knoxville, is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and promoting the history of East Tennessee. The society's programs and activities are made possible through the support of its membership. The society's First Families of Tennessee family heritage program was founded in 1992 and now includes more than 13,000 members in 50 states and eight foreign nations.

I'm looking for information on McWhirters also, in particular Lucinda McWhirter b. about 1817 m. John James. Also, George McWhirter b. about 1825 who married Martha White. Linda Wesson any WESSONs out there?
Barbara. Since you are on the Decatur list, I wonder if your McWhirter is from TN? My James Finch b1825/1827 married Mary 'Polly' McWhirter before 1853. Ruth
Am still looking for information on Charles Franklin Murphy who married Pearl Smith. Charles Franklin was a brother to my grandfather, Perry Houston, both were sons of John Tye and Mary Ann Jones Murphy. John Tye was son of Daniel H. and Martha Kissah Tye Murphy, Daniel son of Daniel and Keria Murphy. Daniel (father of Daniel H.) was a Rev war veteran. I would also like to know if anyone knows anything about a Bartholomew Murphy. He appeared first in Perry County with Daniel H. and then later shows up in Henderson County next door to Daniel H. They then both appear together on Decatur census. Am not so sure that they really moved that often, but that the changing of the county lines may have entered into it. There are some more Murphys buried at Bethel Cemetery nears Scotts Hill, which is where John Tye and Mary Ann are buried as well as a couple of John Tye's daughter. I wonder if they descend from Bartholomew? I have not spent a large amount of time researching them, but do know that Daniel and Bartholomew witnessed some deeds and sales in Anson County, North Carolina before coming first to Perry County. I know that John Tye fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy and I believe that two sons of Bartholomew fought for the Union. Am wondering if that is why my dad and his brother do not know these Murphys. I may be chasing something that is not going to end up being family, but that old gut feeling says there is something here! I also descend from Micajah Scott>Wiley Scott (Catherine Caudle, 2nd wife).Jesse B. Scott>Zula Scott m Ervin Maness (my grandparents). AND James Maners>William Robert [Bill] Maness>Ervin Maness. AND Eliphous Vice>George Vise>James Little Vise>Bland Vise m to Perry Houston Murphy. Other lines from Decatur County/Henderson County area that interest me include: Eason, Caudle, Tucker, Keeton, McWhirter (have nothing on these except for names of great, g-g grandparents).

No, I do not have any idea who she is. She could be an aunt for all I know. Rains is the last name indicated on census. Any ideas? Renea Burkholder > Are you sure that May Rains was married? Are you sure that May Rains was married? Could she have been a relative to these people rather than Mother? Are you saying that Rains is her married name? I found a little on the Family.History Board, that may not be relative to your search, but they are in TN. I don't know how current this person's email address is, either. Please be careful when opening attachments. I just received a "reply" to an earlier Rains query I sent to this list. Added to the duplicate of my message was "Take a look to the attachment". Very innocent seeming, but I've learned the hard way and down loaded the attachment to a floppy not my hard drive. Actually, my virus protection program would not allow me to down load as it identified the attachment as the badtrans virus. Yes, that virus is still out there and it is being spread by people who are not even aware they have it. I have privately contacted the sender, it was not intentional. Be careful, it is easy to get the virus and then send it on. I found this site and thought anyone else interested in the Scotts Hill area might like it. It gives a good discription of the early pioneers cabins. Linda web.utk.edu/~ddonahue/turner/gt-til.htm
These notes are in a letter written by my anscestor John Grigg about the family. " Jake Grigg married-died in Hardin Co., (Tn), left two children, Jones and a girl, Jones married, died in Decatur Co., Tn, and left four children who lived in Decatur Co., , near Scotts Hill" I have very little on him. He was born to Samuel Grigg and Mary Polly Grimes..He lived in Wayne co., abt. 1842, land deed,. He was named in his father's will in 1856. So he died after that. I have not found him in the 1850 Census of Ten. Jacob F. "Jake" Grigg(s)/Gregg b. betw.1805-1821 Maury Co.,Tn married unknown in Tn. had two known children one named Jones Grigg and a girl unnamed. I thought maybe it was James or Jonas, but I studied the letter and it seems to be Jones. Does anyone connect to a Grigg fimily in Decatur Co.,Tn? and Can anyone tell me somthing about the Area of Scotts Hill. I understand it is close to the line of Henderson co., Also. Are there any History books for that area? or a area library? Thank your for any help Linda
