To Linda, David and Betty; I am a Pope in Dyersburg, Tn. I know many Popes in this area. Have been researching the Pope name for many years. Most of the Popes I have found in Hickman, Lewis, Decatur and most especially in Wayne Co. Tn. all desc from the old Parson John Pope b in N.C. Old John had abt 14 kids and his son Cary Whitaker did also. Both were Methodist Ministers, the community of Pope , Tn. just East of the Tn. River on Hwy 412, short distance from Parsons , Tn. was named for one of them. There is a Methodist church in Wayne name Popes Methodist Church also. A Pope reunion is held in Waynesboro , Tn. annually each summer. Should you wish to see many desc of these two Pope just attend one reunion there. I do not desc for either of these Popes but am related way back in the 1700;s. I desc from William Pope b in Bristol, Eng in 1634, came to the Isle of Wight, Va. prior to 1656. I desc from a gwhat ever gson of his, Charles Pope b in N.C. in 1776, m Sarah William in 1796 in Wake Co. N.C. He migrated to Robertson Co. Tn.in abt 1805, two brothers either came with him or followed, they were Dempsy and William Pope. William and wife is buried in Robertson Co Tn. Charles Pope left Robertson in 1828 moved to Henderson Co. Tn. where he died between 1840-50. After his death his children moved from Henderson Co. Three sons and one dau moved to Dyer Co. TN. in the 1860's. Charles Pope was my gggfather. The Popes are an interesting clan of people, if you don't find one that is interesting just keep digging and you will find; very good christian folks, bootlegers, horse theives, adulters and illig children. Sincerely, Grover Pope , Dyersburg, Tn.

I have a Gibson I assume came from Perry Co., as that is where his wife came from. Amanda J. Gibson (nee Tracy) had a son named Roger Mitchell or Mitchell Roger Gibson, the issue of her first marriage, when she married my grandfather Richard "Dick P." Allen in Perry Co. in 1871. Roger Mitchell Gibson, who went by the name of "Mitch," was born about 1866. Mitch Gibson married my great-aunt Nannie Allen in Decatur Co. on 27 Sep 1891. I would appreciate knowing any and all information about related Gibsons. Betty, I have come across the placename Pope in Perry Co. That is where my great-uncle Joseph Henry Allen and his wife Frances Byrd Allen lived after 1864 and before the turn of the century. However, I am not aware of there being a connection between the names Pope and Allen. To answer more to the point, no, I have not come across anyone by the name of Pope. I am searching for information on the parents and siblings of MARY JANE GIBSON, who married NEWTON J. HENDRIX (a/k/a N.J. Hendrix; a/k/a I.N. Hendrix, a/k/a Isaac Hendrix) on February 2, 1871 in Decatur County. They were married by _____________ Totty, J.P.; their bondsman was Covington Tubbs. If anyone has the 1870 census and would be willing to do a lookup, I'd sure appreciate knowing where Newt Hendrix was living and who his neighbors were. I feel certain Newt was living with his mother, Elizabeth, and his brothers, Will and Elisha. (They were living in District 5 in 1860.) Thanks, Karen

Pat, Shelbyville, TN, is located in Bedford County. Your best bet is to obtain the death certificate of C. S. Cromwell. The parents of the deceased are often identified on it. Also, the funeral home in charge will be listed. Funeral homes often have additional information about the deceased. Sometimes the local library will have copies of obituaries for persons who died in their county. Visit the Bedford Co. website for information on death certificates. http://www.tngenweb.org/bedford/death.htm For 1923 death certificates, write the TN State Library, Nashville, TN. There is a link to the TN State Library on the Bedford Co. website. However, some 1920's death certificates are online, maybe you will be lucky and there will be one for C. S. Cromwell. The fee for a copy of a microfilmed death certificate is usually $5.00 from the TN State Library. Hope this helps you. Linda ------------------------------------------------- I would appreciate if someone who has access to the 1920 Census for Henderson County please do a lookup for me. I'm trying to find the family of C.S. CROMWELL, I do not know what the C.S. stands for. I do know that he died in Shelbyville in 1923. If anyone knows anything about this family, I would appreciate hearing from them. Supposedly C.S. Cromwell was known as Rev. C.S. Cromwell. He was married and was the guardian of Clarence D. FOSTER. Thank you for any help you can provide. Pat [email protected]
