    3. Hi Folks, --- I am trying to figure out if the Nashville, Davidson County, or Cheatham County area in Tennessee could at one time have been considered to be in Illinois. I have looked at maps and timelines for the development of Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina, but it isn't clear to me. I believe Virginia at one time included land that later became Illinois, but I can't figure how Tennessee fits into the picture. --- The 1880 Census for Tennessee states that an ancestor was born in Illinois abt 1830, however we have other sources that state that he was born in Davidson County, Tennessee. --- Can someone clarify this for me or recommend a website, book, or map that would be helpful? --- Many thanks, Valerie Gibbs

    3. Cheatham County was formed in 1856 from parts of Davidson & Dickson County. Before westward exploration the states of PA, VA, NC claimed everything due west of the state. Hence NC claimed TN and VA claimed KY and part of OH, IN and IL. Sullivan was the first county formed in 1779. Name Changed to Hawkins 1786. Davidson and Greene Counties were formed in 1783 from Washington County NC. Davidson County being essentially Middle TN and Greene County Eastern TN except for that of Sullivan County. All still considered part of NC until 1790 when "The Territory South of the River Ohio" was formed. TN became a state in 1796 Gene At 05:04 PM 7/8/2014, Dibrellion wrote: > Hi Folks, >--- >I am trying to figure out if the Nashville, Davidson County, or Cheatham County area in Tennessee could at one time have been considered to be in Illinois. 3. Gene What a great summary! Underscoring North Carolina's early "ownership" of what would become Tennessee, North Carolina set aside large quantities of land to be granted veterans of the Revolutionary War. This served as both a reward for faithful service and as an incentive to settle the territory. 2. There used to be an area called Territory south of the Ohio. Not sure what years, but was before Tn was a state.   On Tuesday, July 8, 2014 5:05 PM, Dibrellion <dibrellion@verizon.net> wrote: Hi Folks, --- I am trying to figure out if the Nashville, Davidson County, or Cheatham County area in Tennessee could at one time have been considered to be in Illinois.
