I have a question about John Inskeeper and Matthias Kerlin, Jr. listed as "Test", or I guess "Testators", for deeds listed in Deed Book C, Davidson County Deeds 1791-1793. These deeds are transcribed in a book, Davidson County, Tenn Deeds Vol. 6 (Dec 1791-Apr. 1793) transcribed and typed by Laura Willis. Pub. by Simmons Historical Publications, 1998. My question is whether these two testators were physically present in Davidson County to witness the recording of these deeds. Some of the deed records are folks in Monmouth County New Jersey, or Philadelphia and a person living in Davidson County. The reason I am asking is to ascertain whether Matthias Kerlin, Jr., one of the testators, was in Davidson County during this 1791-1793 time period. Thank you. George Kirlin
Perhaps someone can verify this for me but this may shed some light on George's query ---- I believe the deed itself was witnessed at the date of the deed - not when it was recorded. Years could go by without an official recording of the deed itself. SO....the witnesses would have been in the presence of the deed transaction when it occurred, not when it was recorded. In every case that I have seen, the deed has a date and the recording of the deed has a date and they are usually not the same date.
