http://www.tn.gov/tsla/history/manuscripts/findingaids/ths889.pdf This was donated to the TSLA. It's by far the best documentation relating to Lt. Robert Armstrong II of Knox Co. that I've ever found. I have been looking for a direct male Armstrong descendent from this line for sometime willing to DNA test or already tested that I can compare my husband to with the goal of determining if the Armstrongs of Augusta Co., VA are the same branch later found in Knox Co, TN. as many trees show. >From the intro. on the collection: Anna Coile Durham (wife of Walter T. Durham, local historian and businessman) donated the materials to the Tennessee Historical Society. She inherited the papers from her mother, Grace Armstrong Coile. If anyone knows this family, I would so appreciate being put in touch with them in hopes of learning of any surviving direct Armstrong male descendent. Thank you, Dianne di@montanapets.org
Are you referring to William Armstrong b 1757 in Augusta Co. VA. If so the connection would probably have to go back to Ireland or Scotland William's father, also William, was born in County Fermanaugh Ireland as was his father James. James's father was John, no info on him. James appears to be the immigrant as he arrived in 1734 at the age of 50 with his family. I have found only one son per generation in this line until William b 1757 had a family. He had 3 sons mentioned by name in his will. William, Clinton & Carry. There is a daughter-in-law mentioned, but it's not clear if her husband had passed or she was the wife of one of the sons. She did receive a substantial inheritance. It's sort of confusing since the eldest son in each generation was named William. My gggg-gm was the sister of William b 1757. William 1757 owned lots of land and slaves which he passed on to his children. He also built the first stone house in Rogersville TN, which still stands today and I'm told it is still owned by an Armstrong descendant. Gene, thank you for responding. Gene said: Are you referring to William Armstrong b 1757 in Augusta Co. VA.? Answer: If you're talking about Wm Armstrong married to Elizabeth Jane Erwin, then yes my husband descends from his brother, John Morgan Armstrong. Only I have Wm as born 1759. There is a third son Amos. Nobody knows what became of him. Many online trees have these three sons descending from Lt. Robert Armstrong II with a previous marriage to Jane Van Arsdale before later marrying Margaret Cunningham. I am seeking to prove or disprove if Lt. Robert Armstrong II is the father of Wm, Amos and John Morgan Armstrong. I personally don't think they are. None of the three are in Robert II's will. I haven't found any evidence that Lt. Robert ever lived in Augusta Co. and John Morgan lived there all his life. Also Robert II would have married Jane at age 15 if the online trees are correct. Answer: I sent a query to the TSLA asking if they could connect me with the family of this collection. Since Grace Armstrong Coile was an Armstrong, if she has Armstrong male cousins, who have tested or are willing to test, then we could match their DNA to my husband that descends from John Morgan and hopefully prove/disprove if the two lines are one in the same and Lt. Robert did have an earlier family. They responded it wouldn't be a good time to contact the Durham family due to a recent death. If anyone knows of any Armstrong descendents from this line please pass this on to them. Thanks, everyone and Gene if this is the same family, let me know. Dianne di@montanapets.org
