Re previous inquiry (below). Subject: Street names <<Is there any place on the web to learn the relationship of old street names to current Nashville streets (e.g., Water St., Cherry St., Front St.? Macalyne Watkins Fristoe >> SANBORN FIRE INSURANCE ANNUAL MAPS.From about 1880 to about 1930, a fire insurance company insured structures WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS OF TOWNS across the United States. They did an annual hand drawn extremely detailed map of every city, every street within the city. What is remarkable about these maps is they did a detailed drawing of the outline of every piece of property as it lay on each lot, within each block throughout the city. All streets were named, all blocks were drawn and (as I said) outlines of all the structures were drawn on each lot. For example, if there were 3 structures on one lot, then the outlines of all 3 structures on that lot were drawn, true to shape (a house, perhaps a garage and an outbuilding). Didn't matter how small the structure it seemed. Unfortunately the individual residential lots did not show who owned them. BUT, the streets were all clearly listed and most churches, some businesses and downtown section usually included details around the square. In addition, within each year, it would give some details on the whole city such as population, fire houses and other 'brag items'. The cities or towns did not have to be very big, to be included in the Sanborn Fire Ins. Maps. WHERE TO FIND THEM: these maps exist in their entirety at Library of Congress but very expensive to access thru them. I am pretty sure that Knoxville library has a collection of these maps on microfilm for just the cities of Tennessee. (Try the McClung collection of Knoxville). Perhaps somewhere at Nashville they might have them too (often colleges do) and maybe one of our subscribers can tell you where. I don't think the local Tennessee sources will have EVERY YEAR FOR EVERY CITY IN TENNESSEE (from 1880s to 1930s) but I'm guessing they have every 5 years or so. Therefore you should be able to view and copy from these collections of Sanborn Maps for City of Nashville, at random years during their existence. I'm sure each street will be clearly defined for each year you select. Hope this proves useful to someone. Joyce (Woodruff) Terrana, Burleson, Tx.
