The Cumberland Settlements (Nashville area) was given over first to the white settlement and permission was given to 'cross' indian lands to get to it. It was somewhat of an island in early Tennessee settlement. Some times when you see large 'family moves' to a new area or county it is because that the land was just recently made available for settlement. This happend a lot in the 1830s and 40s in Tennessee.
