The undersigned citizens of Tennessee beg leave to represent to the Legislature that, owing to the law passed at the last session, authorizing the notes of the Nashville and State Bank to be received in payment for all debts due for taxes and to individuals, it has by this preference, caused the notes of the Farmers and Mechanics Bank of Nashville to depreciate and thereby many persons have been seriously injured, and the community deprived of a portion of its circulation emdium, which, at this time of embarrassment, is very interesting to them. It has generally been believed and admitted by all who have known the situation of this Bank, that its capacity to redeem its notes in circulation, is equal to any of the banks of this state; and we consider it entirely safe and solvent. We therefore pray, that owing to the great pecuniary distress, and as an act of justice to this institution that the legislature will grant it the same privileges and immunities as are granted to other banks, whose notes have been made currently law; and we will as in duty bound ever pray. 15 June 1820.
