I hope the traffic on the list can bear one more comment on the mental hospital. I have a copy of a 1900 Davidson County soundex index census entry for John RYMAN. He is listed an "enumerated with Davidson County Asylum for the Insane" and an inpatient. So yes, Brenda should look for her ancestor in the census because they WERE listed there.
