Yes, these deed books are FULL of slave data - more slaves than anything else! I have a copy of Sue Smith abstracted deed book H if anyone needs a lookup. The book is indexed by slave names and owner names for the period Sept. 1, 1835 through February 7, 1839. In case anyone is interested in more info about the African American Porter and Cook family, I did some lookups in some Davidson Co. TN genealogy books I own. RE: 1. For researchers of African-American ancestors who may have been slaves, I suggest viewing the early deed books of Davidson County. Currently, I am viewing Deed Bk W that covers "personal property" (non-real estate transfers) from August 15, 1833 through August 27, 1835. Many slaves are mentioned in these conveyances and they usually include names, ages, and entire family units. Deed Book Z covers the time period of Sept. 1, 1835 through February 7, 1839. Deed Book H (which has also been abstracted by Mary Sue Smith and published by Heritage Books, Inc.) covers the period December 1809 - August 1821. I'm sure there are other time periods in other volumes as well. J. Johnson, Florida
Hi Taneya, This is absolutely wonderful. There is a real need for this information for those of us researching African-American ancestors from the Nashville/Davidson area. I will pass this information on to other people I know of who are doing family history research in the area, via Afrigeneas. What a great Christmas/New Years gift for us all. I am loking to find out the relationships between the following men of Davidson and Wilson abt 1785-1807: Dr James FERGUS of New Hanover Co, NC who was granted 4800 acres of land along Mill Creek in Davidson Co, TN for serving as a surgeon in the Continental Line of NC. Men owning ajoining property at various times were Jonathan Phillips, Samuel Barton, William Walton, Osmond Allen and Cornelius Glasgow. Land (4800 acres)sold by Nicholas Perkins Hardiman (sheriff and collector) to Howell Tatum on Sept 19, 1795. Witness to sale of 480 acres to Samuel Barton on Dec 1, 1790 include John FERGUS. William FERGISON's possessions were inventoried in Oct 1796 and appraised on April 12, 1797. Philip Phillips was the Administrator. The court ordered such inventory to be issued by deed from William Walton to Ormond Allen and was proven by Cornelius Glasgow. John FERGUSON of Wilson Co issued a bill of sale on Aug 22 1806 to William Matlock of Davidson Co a negro woman named Lucy. Witnesses included Jonathan Phillips. Notice the names Jonathan Phillips (and Philip Phillips), Wm Walton, Ormond Allen and Cornelius Glasgow appearing with each of these men. Could this James FERGUS, Wm FERGISON and John FERGUSON be father and sons? Your thoughts are appreciated. For those of you who may have further interest in the Nashville Globe, we have a searchable index to the newspaper that was created by one of our patrons/donors. It's really more than an index, as it also has abstracts of the articles. At this time, it is only available in-house, so you would have to come down to the library to the Nashville Room and sign on to one of our Genealogy computers to use it. We are looking at the possibility of making it available via our website soon. Thanks, Aimee B. James, C.A.
