    1. [TNDAVIDS] Thanks on Anna Baker comments
    2. Lorene Lambert
    3. Thanks to Kathleen and all others. Yes, I too, have that photo. It is interesting to note that there was also a Jacob Sanders in Stewart County with wife and children. I agree that the Benton records in NC may point to a possible county origin. Some Benton and Armstrong families also settled in Robertson County at Cross Plains. Supposedly the Benton's Anna and father were traveling with did not survive the earthquake on the waters of the Cumberland. The writing referred to by one of Anna Baker's daughters was supposed to have originally been a newspaper article. I have yet to verify that, as I have hand copied copies. It also says a complete chart on her descendants was recently made (1890). Anyone ever seen it? I would believe it resided with the Wrights. I believe Anna's mother died in childbirth or during her first 10 years, hence their uprooting trip to MT and no further mention of any siblings. Her father was a frontier type. My grandmother told me that Anna's mother was bought with a bag of salt. She didn't like it, but of course we know that salt may have been a valuable dowery. She seemed to indicate there was no actual marriage. As to Anna's middle name of Lawrence. That I did not know that! Interesting: that name was carried on by Nancy Baker Evan's daughter, Sarah Foster to one of her sons, Lawrence Foster. Perhaps it is a reference to Anna's mother's people. I agree that Joseph Sanders never returned. I have absolutely no record that he ever came back. I once heard that it was believed that he remarried and went further west, but I presume an early death is why we can't find him. When he was moving from NC through TN, he was between census recordings, and Davidson County has many records destroyed or non-existent from those early days. Unless someone surfaces with more detective work, we may never know. Again, keep in touch if anyone can find more. How quickly we all forget. I grew up within a few miles of were James and Anna lived, yet some of us did not really know our own cousins. Lorene

    3. I descend from Anna Lawrence and James Baker also, thru their daughter Rosanna who married Gregor MacGregor EZELL. I have a copy of a photo of Anna and James. Do you already have this photo or would you like for me to forward you a copy? No leads as to Anna's mother but it is said (not proven that I know of) that her father was a Joseph Sanders. ------------------------------------------------------- Re Sanders of Rutherford Co TN I also descend from the SANDERS bothers who migrated to RUTHERFORD Co. TN from Edgecombe County, NC. The brothers were the sons of Thomas Sanders (died 1802 in Edgecombe Co. NC) and Sarah Jordan. They were: Thomas II, Cornelius, Luke, Elisha, and my 4th great grandfather Isaac. (Comment - my great grandmother also descends from this Isaac Sanders line and she married the son of Rosanna BAKER and Gregor Macgregor EZELL.) Anyhow, in my research of this Sander family, I have never come across a reference to any Joseph Sanders. Also I have not been able to find any Joseph Sanders in early Davidson Co. TN records. One source I have gone thru is both volumes of "Davidson Co. TN Wills and Inventories, 1783-1830", by Tim and Helen Marsh - looking for his name as a buyer at an estate sale or as a debtor to an estate. --------------------------------------------------------- Re Joseph Sanders and Gates Co. NC and Stewart Co TN If you will refer to the "bio" of Anna written by her daughter in 1890, it states that "their next halt was in STEWART Co. TN,................. where Mrs. Baker married at the age of 19, in 1811". I'm not sure that Joseph Sanders ever made it back to Davidson Co. after the earthquake. Anna and James probably only came back to Davidson because all of James's siblings were in that area. Joseph may have returned to Stewart Co. TN or settled elsewhere or died shortly after 1811. The daughter who wrote the "bio", Elizabeth Jane Baker Wright, born 1828, doesn't cite any memories of her grandfather Joseph Sanders and it "seems" that she didn't personally know him. Aside from it being strange Anna's mother is not named, I find it odd that no siblings of Anna's are mentioned, or if she was an only child, that she is not mentioned as perhaps "Joseph brought his only child ........". In my opinion (no proof of course) Anna's mother died when Anna was too young to remember her and therefore Anna didn't talk about her mother to her own children. ---------------------------------------------------- The 1800 Census of North Carolina shows 3 households headed by a Joseph Sanders. 1. GATES County, Joseph Sanders males 1 under age 10, 1 age 26 to 45 females 1 under age 10 slaves 8 2. Carteret County, Joseph Sanders males 1 under age 10, 1 age 26 to 45 females 1 age 10 to 16, 1 age 26 to 45 slaves 4 3. Jones County, Joseph Sanders (also on 1790 census) males 1 under 10, 1 age 10 to 16, 1 age 26 to 45 females 2 under age 10, 1 age 10 to 16, 1 age 26 to 45 no slaves The 1810 Census of NC does not show ANY of these Joseph Sanders, so that's no help. -------------------------------------------------------------- Re Stewart Co. TN and the BENTON and ARMSTRONG families Stewart Co. TN Deed Records (1800 to 1810) show that the State of North Carolina granted land to: BENTON, JESSE Armstrong, John Armstrong, Thomas Armstrong, Martin (The above Armstrong names were all listed on the 1800 census of Stokes Co. NC) Personally, I think the 1800 Census Gates Co. NC, Joseph Sanders is of interest as he had no female of an age to be his wife, AND because JESSE BENTON is also on the 1800 Census of Gates Co. NC Of course none of the above is actual proof but I do find it be to a very interesting possible clue. ------------------------------------------------------------ Let me know about the photo and what you thing of the above. 3. Dear Lorene, Hello, I have a Sanders connection in Wilson County, TN. My husband's 3rd great grandmother was Elvira Jemima Sanders. Her parents were Rhoderick Sanders born about 1808 in North Carolina and Drucilla or Priscilla Sanders born about 1808 in North Carolina. I do not know if her mother's name is Drucilla or Priscilla and I don't know what her maiden name is. I believe Rhoderick's had a sister named Rhody or Rhoda Sanders born about 1803 in North Carolina. My husband's Elivria Jemima Sanders married Andrew Jackson Barker on January 4, 1854. I don't know if any of this sounds familiar to you, but thought I would share.
