I saved an email someone sent to a list with a LARGE list of names of those making the trip with Col. Donelson, and a separate list of those coming with Capt. Robertson. The Donelson list has "Jesse Maxwell family" To answer another question as to anyone killed, it shows Eli Payne (killed). This list came from a large chart the original poster ordered from a Virginia historical society. I'm reluctant to post the entire list here, but anyone who asks me I will send it to them. Thank you Ken for removing the question mark on which Maxwell traveled with the Donelson group. The history I have is that our Maxwell was with a large wagon train leaving from Charleston shortly after the Revolutionary War. Buchanan and Drake went out first to check out the area that became Logan Co., KY. Our Maxwell family and some others settled in the Sumner Co area until 1795 before going on to Logan Co., KY. Some of the names that were supposedly in that wagon train were: Buchanan, Carnahan, Pyeatt, Shannon, Billingsley, White, Blair, Newton, Porter, Preston, MAXWELL, Rankin, Marrs and most likely Morrow, Tennant, Pylant and Garvin. Wherever I have looked for our Maxwell's I have found many of these names from the ongoing generations from VA, TN, KY, AR and into TX. I would love to have the list from the Robertson group, thank you. Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2007 07:33:46 -0500From: [email protected]: Fleming House Question To: [email protected]: [email protected] Does anyone have any knowledge of a turn-of-the-century Nashville house, known by the family name of Fleming? I am trying to trace down the location of that house, which was still standing back in the 60's. Would appreciate any information anyone might provide. Thank you. Here is a link to a great "Photographic Collection of The Good Old Days" of south Nashville. An index on the site lists 130 photos. I highly recommend the site. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/jimrv6/index.html The website's description of its contents is: "These pages are mainly photographs of the homes, the streets, and the places located on and around Rutledge Hill, Howard School, the old University of Nashville, Carroll Street, 2nd Ave, Wharf Ave. and Lindsley Ave. The pages will also include the areas all the way from Hermitage Ave. to 8th Ave, South. And, they will include the areas all the way from Broad Street to Trimble Bottoms and Dudley Park." "This is a special Nashville history shown in photographs of the residential architecture of the old victorian section of the city. The years of the photos will eventually range all the way from the Civil War era to the 1970's." Jeanne Johnson, Florida

Do any of these records mention Samuel Barton? -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Richard and Pat Sent: Monday, July 09, 2007 5:57 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [TNDAVIDS] Col. John Donelson's Co. - Maxwell Thank you Kathleen for your input. I'm sure I have read a partial list of Donelson's party in one of the history books but never saw a Maxwell on a list of his party. I have seen David and James mentioned in early TN history and there was also a John and Jesse, among others. There are mentions of a William who had mail waiting at the post office in Davidson Co. but that was in early 1800's after our William had left the area. Tennessee Genealogical Records show that William Maxwell's daughter, Margaret (Peggy), married Joseph Morgan Sept. 22, 1793 in Sumner Co. In Williams Will he mentions his daughter, Marget Morgan. He is on the 1788, 1790 &1794 tax lists for Sumner Co., and probably the other years but that is all I have. He was the only Maxwell on the lists though there were supposed to be other Maxwells in the area. He left TN. for Logan Co., KY in 1794/5 and was on the tax list for Logan Co. starting in 1795. Thank you all for your help. Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: "alan ishikawa" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, July 09, 2007 12:27 PM Subject: Re: [TNDAVIDS] Col. He was killed by Indians at Caney Fork one one of the later trips he made from VA to Davidson County. William and Moses, the heirs of David inherited his land grant and sold it to Judge John Overton. The land grant is located around the site of Traveler's Rest. David's brother Jesse (my ggg-gf) claimed 640 acres to the south of David's. My ggg-gf William Phillips did not have an original land grant, but lived on adjoining property to the west of Jesse. He married Jesse's daughter, Elizabeth. Judge Overton's son, John Jr, married Jesse's granddaughther. Harriett. Her father was Jesse Jr. John Overton Jr built the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville. He named it after his wife's family. Jacob Cheek, a coffee merchant persuaded him to serve his coffee in his hotel. That was the start of the Maxwell House Coffee Company. Also a history of the Maxwell family says the William and Moses Maxwell went to Cincinnati "Northwest Territories" Gene
Anyone seen a list of the folks who died on this trip? Thank you Kathleen for your input. Pat - Do you know when was William Maxwell born? It seems unlikely that he came to TN with Benjamin Drake if he fathered a son in 1885. According to history passed down he migrated with the John Buchanan and Benjamin Drake group. I find them mentioned in the history books but haven't found mention of Wm. Maxwell. I guess he was one of those "others". I do find William in the Sumner Co. tax lists in the 1880's. Jeanne: William was born 1742 in Augusta Co., VA, son of John Maxwell and Mary. He died 1820 in Logan Co., KY. OOOO! I see what you mean. I wrote 1885 instead of 1785. Thanks for catching that for me Jeanne. I have been following this conversation with interest because my husbands GGG-Grandfather, William Maxwell, was in that area at the same time. According to history passed down he migrated with the John Buchanan and Benjamin Drake group. I find them mentioned in the history books but haven't found mention of Wm. Maxwell. I guess he was one of those "others". I do find William in the Sumner Co. tax lists in the 1880's. I can see that much good research has been done by all of you and was wondering if any of you might have come accross mention of William Maxwell. I would like to confirm that he was actually with the Buchanan group and when he actually went to Tennessee. His son, William Jr. was born in TN in 1885. Thanks so much for that info. I was unaware of the other children. My father had a cousin, Louise Butler, who once verified that there was a connection but never would say exactly what. I'm going to check those leads, especially the Butlers. That might very well be the link. Diane Clover-Evans "Roll with the stars and run with Orion...."
Thanks so much for the information. I figured that if there was a relation it would actually be through John Donelson. I know Jackson adopted one of the Donelson grandchildren. But as far as I can see there's no link there. Then there's the matter of why my family was so mysterious about it. Recently I contacted a couple of my father's cousins (ages 88 and 93) and they both clearly remembered the story but they never knew what the connection was either. I can only think there might have been a hidden woman and baby in the background and they all tried to keep it a secret due to Jackson's political career. Sorry, Edmund's father was born in NC (not VA) according to the 1880 census. -----Original Message----- From: jj [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2007 9:39 PM To: '[email protected]' Subject: RE: [TNDAVIDS] Edmund Jackson, b. 1830 TN It wasn't too difficult to follow Edmund Jackson back but the trail becomes more difficult before 1850. Andrew Jackson had 2 adopted children, one who took his name. He was Andrew Jackson Jr. He was the son of Rachel's brother., Severn Donelson. The other was an Creek Indian boy named Lyncoya who died at age 16. The Jacksons also acted as guardians for eight other children. John Samuel Donelson, Daniel Smith Donelson and Andrew Jackson Donelson were the sons of Rachel's brother Samuel Donelson who died in 1804. Andrew Jackson Hutchings was Rachel's orphaned grand nephew. Caroline Butler, Eliza Butler, Edward Butler, and Anthony Butler were the orphaned children of Edward Butler, a family friend. They came to live with the Jacksons after the death of their father. As you can see lots of people were named after Andrew Jackson around Nashville. My gg-gf's brother was Andrew Jackson Phillips.
