    1. [TNDAVIDS] Flat Rock School
    2. A few years ago I wrote an article - African-American Public Schools in Nashville and Davidson County - for Delores Black Kennedy for her publication Nashville Black Yellow Pages. Nashville Black Yellow Pages is a directory of Nashville area African-American owned businesses. Ms. Kennedy often includes articles of a historical nature in the yearly issue. I just found the article and Flat Rock School is listed. I believe my source would have been a 1920 report on Davidson County Schools. The report does not usually give the exact address of the school just a general location. I will check next week to see if I can find a location. Gene do you have a source for "northwest corner of Joyner Ave and Foster Avenue?" That is so exact that I would bet Gene is correct. I can't post the article because it appeared in a copyrighted publication but I will be happy to check the list for a specific school. 2. Regarding the "Flatrock School" I was raised in the area of Woodbine locally referred to Flatrock on Thompson Lane just off Nolensville Road. I do not recall any school of that name in the years 1946 to 1956. I doubt if there was ever a school by that name since "Flatrock" was a colloquialism. I can only remember Turner Elementary, Woodbine Elementary, Whitsett Elementary and Central High. Others have been built since that time. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

    2. No Anita, I'm sorry. Jack Spalding has been researching the history of the Flatrock and Woodbine areas for several years and he may know. If I see him I will ask. Gene's location sounds good, that is certainly right in the heart of Flatrock - Gene Phillips [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) wrote: "The location where Flatrock School is the northwest corner of Joyner Ave and Foster Avenue. Gene gave a good description of where it is located. The name comes from the Gower family who were among the first settlers on the Cumberland. This utility can help you locate geographical features - _http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic_ (http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic) Once you run the query and find what you are looking for you can view a map showing the location of the feature. I chose the google map but there are other map choices as well. _http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis538/getgooglemap?p_lat=36.2103337&p_longi=-86.976113&fi d=1306501_ (http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis538/getgooglemap?p_lat=36.2103337&p_longi=-86.976113&fid=1306501) I zoomed in on the map to the third level from the top and got a good view of the roads running near the river bank closest to where the island is. You can use the satilite or hybird feature to see an an aeirial view of the island. They must be recent images, everything looks brown. Grass and trees in Middle Tennessee are brown right now from the drought. Or you can skip all of this and just go to any map utility and query a map of Davidson County, TN. Find Ashland City Highway and follow the path of that road near the river and you will see the island. II'm not finding anything in my files of a property genealogy of the island but from helping with the research of Metro Archives patrons, I seem to remember that the island was owned first by James Russell, then by some of the Gower family. If Bill Meadows is on this list he can tell you who some of the later owners were, I think. I found the island on the nashville.gov site planning maps. The current owner is Wallace Investors, LLC and the property description is 36.95 acres - GOWER ISLAND S OF ASHLAND CITY HY W OF BACK CREEK RD Debie ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

    3. The location where Flatrock School is the northwest corner of Joyner Ave and Foster Avenue. That's in the Woodbine community in Nashville east of Woodlawn Cemetery and Hwy 31. There is also a Flatrock School in Wilson and 3 other counties. 3. The D. Reed (David and Harriet Wallace Read) family, part of which is listed in P.O. Goodlettsville, District 24, Davidson Co. TN, is surrounded by Fergusons. I have all the marriages in my Read family and to my knowledge we have no ties to the Ferguson family. When younger, David b. 1799 NC d. 1872 TN once operated a carriage/blacksmith shop with his younger brother Guilford Read b. 1803 NC d.1883 TN and wife Elizabeth Wallace Read who moved to Gallatin, Sumner Co. TN in 1853. James Read brought these two sons to Nashville in 1805 and they married Wallace sisters whose family arrived in Nashville in abt. 1808. James Read then moved to Robertson County and died there in 1826. my tngenes <[email protected]> wrote: I am looking to find out the identity of an "S" Ferguson (female, b TN 1810) listed on the 1860 census for Davidson Co, District 24.
