    3. Cheatham County was formed in 1856 from parts of Davidson & Dickson County. Before westward exploration the states of PA, VA, NC claimed everything due west of the state. Hence NC claimed TN and VA claimed KY and part of OH, IN and IL. Sullivan was the first county formed in 1779. Name Changed to Hawkins 1786. Davidson and Greene Counties were formed in 1783 from Washington County NC. Davidson County being essentially Middle TN and Greene County Eastern TN except for that of Sullivan County. All still considered part of NC until 1790 when "The Territory South of the River Ohio" was formed. TN became a state in 1796 Gene At 05:04 PM 7/8/2014, Dibrellion wrote: > Hi Folks, >--- >I am trying to figure out if the Nashville, Davidson County, or Cheatham County area in Tennessee could at one time have been considered to be in Illinois. 3. Valerie, He probably was born in Davidson Co TN and the family moved across the river. At one time Virginia went all the way to the Mississippi River, that included Illinois and Tn.....just as North Carolina was part of Viriginia too! 2 Great books to have are: Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses 1790-1920 by William Thorndale and William Dollarhide. and The Handy Book for Genealogists Everton Publishers., Inc. 2. Thanks so much for your offer. My ancestor is Orman(d) Allen SIMPKINS, b ca 1794, died after 1856 (date his will was written). I have been researching this man since the 1970s and have some unverified info (which I will not use until it is verified). One such is this: "believe Orman is buried behind the Weidne house on Old Hickory Blvd in NE Davidson County". Are you familiar with the Weidne house? Is there a cemetery behind it? If so, has that cemetery been surveyed? Again, thank you so much for your generosity. 3. Faye, How generous of you to offer to do lookups. Would either the Nashville or State Archives have divorce records? I'm looking for the years 1938 to 1955. My grandmother was a singer and radio show personality who was married several times. She was also a WAC during WW II. We are trying very hard to sort out her marriages. I've been told that, since Nashville was her residence, all her divorces would have had to be in Davidson County. See this Link to my grandmother's Find A Grave Memorial http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=28720621 If this lookup request is possible for you, please let me know and I will send you all the details of names and dates. 2. Hi DAVIDSON list, I have a Naomi ARMSTRONG (1795-1872). On April 1, 1816, I have it that she married James LEEPER (1790-1839). Her parents were Mathew ARMSTRONG and Margaret Shipley SLOAN, but I lack further data about those parents. The LEEPER family is a major family in my data base. They settled in colonial Virginia and in the late 1700s moved on to Tennessee. Some in the 1800s moved to Missouri. Knowing that spelling varies, I also have a Narcissa P. SLOANE (1825-1865) who married on September 17, 1850 in Washington Co, Missouri a Garrett F. TIDWELL (1823-1886). The TIDWELL family also came into colonial Virginia, lived a couple of generations in Tennessee, and moved to Missouri. Our lineage includes a LEEPER-TIDWELL marriage. If any of you can relate to any of these folks, I am glad to share. I do have considerable LEEPER and TIDWELL data. I don't recognize any of the Armstrongs mentioned but for anyone researching Armstrongs, if you have ancestry, this is my husband's brick wall: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/15365304/person/1349307725 John Morgan Armstrong I have a rock solid paper trail to him. Many think Lt. Robert Armstrong was his father with an earlier marriage to Jane Van Arsdale which is still showing on my tree but I am increasingly convinced he is not the father of John Morgan Armstrong. Still hoping to find a direct male Armstrong descendent of Lt. Robert Armstrong to compare to my husband. If anyone researching Armstrong's sees anyone familiar, would love to hear from you. I believe there are many descendants in TN. Dianne di@montanapets.org

    3. Gene, thank you for responding. Gene said: Are you referring to William Armstrong b 1757 in Augusta Co. VA.? Answer: If you're talking about Wm Armstrong married to Elizabeth Jane Erwin, then yes my husband descends from his brother, John Morgan Armstrong. Only I have Wm as born 1759. There is a third son Amos. Nobody knows what became of him. Many online trees have these three sons descending from Lt. Robert Armstrong II with a previous marriage to Jane Van Arsdale before later marrying Margaret Cunningham. I am seeking to prove or disprove if Lt. Robert Armstrong II is the father of Wm, Amos and John Morgan Armstrong. I personally don't think they are. None of the three are in Robert II's will. I haven't found any evidence that Lt. Robert ever lived in Augusta Co. and John Morgan lived there all his life. Also Robert II would have married Jane at age 15 if the online trees are correct. Gene said: If so the connection would probably have to go back to Ireland or Scotland William's father, also William, was born in County Fermanaugh Ireland as was his father James. James's father was John, no info on him. James appears to be the immigrant as he arrived in 1734 at the age of 50 with his family. I have found only one son per generation in this line until William b 1757 had a family. He had 3 sons mentioned by name in his will. William, Clinton & Carry. Answer: That doesn't sound like the same line. Gene said: There is a daughter-in-law mentioned, but it's not clear if her husband had passed or she was the wife of one of the sons. She did receive a substantial inheritance. It's sort of confusing since the eldest son in each generation was named William. My gggg-gm was the sister of William b 1757. William 1757 owned lots of land and slaves which he passed on to his children. He also built the first stone house in Rogersville TN, which still stands today and I'm told it is still owned by an Armstrong descendant. Answer: I sent a query to the TSLA asking if they could connect me with the family of this collection. Since Grace Armstrong Coile was an Armstrong, if she has Armstrong male cousins, who have tested or are willing to test, then we could match their DNA to my husband that descends from John Morgan and hopefully prove/disprove if the two lines are one in the same and Lt. Robert did have an earlier family. They responded it wouldn't be a good time to contact the Durham family due to a recent death. If anyone knows of any Armstrong descendents from this line please pass this on to them. Thanks, everyone and Gene if this is the same family, let me know. Dianne di@montanapets.org

I have found only one son per generation in this line until William b 1757 had a family. He had 3 sons mentioned by name in his will. William, Clinton & Carry. There is a daughter-in-law mentioned, but it's not clear if her husband had passed or she was the wife of one of the sons.
