Does anyone have information regarding the writings of Rev JW Matlock? He supposedly wrote " The Reluctant Pioneer", which is suppose to be an account of the Cotton family which came to Tennesee with the Donelson Party. I am also searching for information on the family of this John Cotton who came to the Nashville area with the Donelson Party. John Cotton's wife has been stated as being Mary Lodema "Deem" Felston Cotton. Looking for information regarding his ancestry and descendants or historical items of interest during this time period. Thank you Marla
I will be on the lookout for the family of John Cotton as I continue to research the Davidson county records. Checked the signers of the Articles of Agreement or Compact of Government entered into by the Settlers of the Cumberland River, 1st May 1780 and did not see a John, or any other Cotton listed. Also checked North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee, 1784 and did not see a Cotton listed. Have lists of persons in Davidson county in 1812 and will check them when time permits. Margaret Nichol
I just received in the mail from my cousin Belinda the fact that William Philips signed up in the military and he was a major. One thing I noticed through the whole document that he signed his name with Philips rather than Phillips. I also noticed on the 1830 census he appears as William Philips, although his gravestone is marked with Phillips and it appears that all of his children names came out as Phillips. How confusing. Anyway if anybody has the 1840 Hardin or LaRue county census, I would appreciate them looking them up for me. He lived in Sonora. Thanking you for taking the time. Betty

Searching for information about my paternal grandmother, Bessie (or possibly Elizabeth) TURNER, b. 13-Oct-1864 somewhere in Tennessee. She and my grandfather, Thomas A. PRICE, (b. 26-Apr-1862 in Russellville, Logan Co., KY) were married 19-Sep-1883 in Tennessee and moved to Abilene, Taylor Co., TX 24-Dec-1884. At the suggestion of several of my fellow rooters, I sent off for her death certificate and found that her mother's maiden name was TRIBUE. There is a chance that TRIBUE was a misspelling, or maybe a variant spelling of TRABUE, the family name of a group French Huguenots that fled their homeland in the 1600's to escape religious persecution. One line of Trabues migrated to the DAVIDSON Co., TN area and were prominent in business, medicine and politics, where Charles Trabue was mayor of NASHVILLE 1830-32. Does anybody have any information on these Trabues? Hopefully there may be some connection here. And does anybody have any information on a TURNER male, born possibly 1837 to 1844, and a TRABUE (or TRIBUE) female, born possibly 1840 to 1844, who married probably earlier than 1863, somewhere in Tennessee, possibly in Davidson County, and had a daughter, Bessie, (or Elizabeth) b. 13-Oct-1864. Many thanks to all who have been so helpful. As always, I'll be most happy to share any information I have. John E. Price JohneP4596@aol.com Ft. Worth, TX

I will be in Davidson County next week and would like to know the best resources for research in that county and for other TN locations. Family names: FULTON, STACEY, JONES, JOHNSON, TURBEVILLE, OWENS, CLINTON, SMITH. Thanks! Jane Chandler Holt
Isn't it funny how you go back and read what you wrote after it has already come out and you think why did I say that. That is the way with money. I have not idea what I was thinking of. Anyway here is mine. If somebody recognizes anything please let me know. As you can see they later moved to Kentucky. Thanking you ahead of time. Mine starts out with William Phillips (1773 -1860) who arrived in America from Wales about 1795 with a brother named Philip and an elderly relative a cousin. I think they first arrived in Virginia. They then moved on to Davidson County TN. where they lived for a time with another relative. Not long after settling in Davidson County, William met Nancy Henderson in 1797 and married her and lived in Nashville and was friends with Andrew Jackson, he marched in the war of 1812 and attained the rank of Colonel. Nancy and William had eight children. They were 1. William Henderson Phillips (1798 -before 1870)in Davidson, county, TN. . 2. Isaac Cullen Phillips, (3-19-1800-1883) born in Davidson County, TN 3. John B Phillips, (11-6-1803-1875) born in Davidson County, TN 4. Madison Phillips, (1805-1882) born in Davidson County, TN 5. Josiah Phillips, (1808-1834) born in Davidson County, TN (my Gt, Gt. Grandfather)Moved to Hardin County (now LaRue county) with his parents and rest of the family, 6. James M. Phillips (1809- ?) born in Davidson County, TN 7. David Phillips (1810-1890) 8 Philip Purdy Phillips (1812-1890) in Davidson County, TN.
I am still looking for the William Phillips family. He married a Nancy Henderson and while they lived there had 8 children. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Betty

My grandfather was Thomas Elmore CRUMPTON, and is a mystery to us, in that there is some memory of him saying that his real father was VAN DYKE. He is gone now, so too late to clarify. He was b. 30 DEC 1902 in Nashville TN. I have just begun to make a search. Does anyone recognize either of these names for this time/place? I believe his mother's name was Willie LOWERY. His father (or step-father) CRUMPTON was a grocer somewhere in town, and my mother believes her father visited him in the late 1930's. My grandfather also played minor-league baseball, though for a short time, we do not know what team. This was probably 1930ish, and somewhere in the East. Probably not TN. Forgive the beginner question, but does anyone know if birth records are available for this time in Nashville TN? Thank you ahead of time! Sharyn
