Wow! What an incredible find! I wish you would run across my Burnside/Howe album that I saw 30+ years ago in PA that now no one seems to have remembered seeing. Glad I took pictures of some of the pictures. Tsla has their microfilm inventories online. Check those to see which roll you need. Then search FS for that deed book. Faye, you are so kind to offer your help. I am researching Thomas Hobby Puckett from Williamson County, TN he died in 1802, do you think there would be anything there that would help me. I am trying to connect him to his father Richard Puckett from Henrico/Prince Edward/Amelia Counties, VA. Thanks for being so kind. Faye, Would there be records for Dickson County, TN there? I am searching for probate records for William B. West who died in Dickson Co, TN 1820/1821. He came to Dickson County from Bertie, NC before 1812. There was a William West Billips that changed his name to William B. West in Bertie. I suspect it is this man. I am hoping to find a connection to Billips in his probate records. I have been through the ones on familysearch.org with no luck. His wife is Elizabeth and William West Billips married an Elizabeth Fleetwood. I would love to know if there is a connection to that family in the records also. William B. West is my 4th great grandfather and I would love to know if his birth name was Billips and not West. That is so sweet of you to offer to do a look-up. I appreciate it so much! Thank you! Sorry for the last message. I thought I had deleted the unnecessary parts. Hi again, Thank you all for your replies; I'll keep your suggestions in mind. The US Genweb map for Tennessee where you click on the different years and see the formation of the counties, is very interesting, as are the other sites you all mentioned. Cheryl's idea that the ancestor was born in Tennessee and moved to Illinois is a good possibility. If you go to www.mapsofworld.com/usa/, you can see that the upper northwest corner of Tennessee is very close to Illinois. Tennessee, Missouri, and Kentucky meet in the northwest corner of Tennessee and Illinois reaches down almost to where these states meet. At this point, Tennessee is probably only 20-30 miles from Illinois. Another person reminded me that the birthplaces listed on the censuses can often be wrong. I'm not quite ready to accept this, as both the 1860 and 1880 censuses gave the birthplace as Illinois. An online acquaintance who is working on this same line is out of town right now, but when she returns, we'll discuss it. If she has any new ideas, I'll let you all know. Thanks again, Valerie Gibbs

Many Tennesseans migrated to Illinois between 1820 to 1840. Several branches of my family, from various middle TN counties, were separated by this quest for cheap land. Illinois did State Censuses in 1825, 1830, and 1835. This is very helpful in learning when our ancestors arrived in IL, (as of course are their Deed records). ancestry.com has all these IL State Census in their database. They are easier to access by selecting the Search "Card Catalog" feature. You need to check these records to find the earliest date your ancestor's father was in IL. Another source is the Davidson County Deed records to see if / when the father sold his TN land. If you do not subscribe to ancestry.com, I will be happy to do a lookup for you. Valerie, You reminded me with your post, that one of my Tennessee ancestors was from TN and crossed the river near Fulton, to Illinois and they farmed there in Illinois, and later came back across the river to TN! There was a ferry at that site, and I know it went to Cairo, Illinois, as that is where my g.g. grandfather left when he went off to the Civil War across the river to Cairo! He had been living in the Henry Co TN. Cheryl On Wednesday, July 9, 2014 7:54 PM, Dibrellion <dibrellion@verizon.net> wrote: Sorry for the last message. I thought I had deleted the unnecessary parts. By 1830 Tennessee (1796) and Illinois (1818) were both states and there was no cross over. If he was born in Illinois in 1830 then there would have been no way to confuse that place with Tennessee. Two separate place many miles apart in 1830.

Gene What a great summary! Underscoring North Carolina's early "ownership" of what would become Tennessee, North Carolina set aside large quantities of land to be granted veterans of the Revolutionary War. This served as both a reward for faithful service and as an incentive to settle the territory.
