I want to share with you the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. Probably a lot of you are already familiar with this site. For those of you who are not, I think you will find the site really helpful. To get an idea of how the GNIS works go the the site and follow the instructions below. You can put in any state and any county. After you do the cemetery search, you might try putting in a surname of family you have in the county at "Feature Name" and see if there are any hits. Leave "Feature Type" blank. http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html At "State or Territory Name" choose Tennessee, at "County Name" type in Davidson, at "Feature Type" choose Cemetery. That is all you need to enter. Scroll to the bottom and click on "Send Query". You will find links to this site and many other useful web sites at the Metropolitan Archives of Nashville and Davidson Co. web page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/3661/ Debie
Are newspaper obituaries from 1913 available in the Nashville/Davidson area? Advice? Thanks. Chuck Burress CBurress@tcia.net
I want to thank everyone who sent me information on the War of 1812. It was very helpful. Genealogy on the internet is great - being able to share and receive information with others. Thanks again Marla
Is there anyone researching the HOLT or UTLEY families on Davidson Co? I am looking for the following ties to the GRIZZARD's of Davidson County, TN. Edney Frances Grizzard married a __ Holt. They had Manervia, Jooseph, David, Mary, Edney, Francis, James, Elizabeth, and Luracy. Edney died before 1850 and apparantly her husband died before of after her as their children were living with Edney's family in Davidson Co. Also looking for Lucy "Martha" Grizzard who marred an Utley. They had Zebulon, Gabriel, Lucinda, and Elizabeth. I believe my Utley died and Lucy married a Mr. Nowington. I haven't found a marriage record for either of these couples. I have only had access to the Sistler's marriage index to check. Thanks, Sandra Beaver, Birmingham, AL

Can anyone tell me if the following streams and "landmarks" still exist in Davidson County? Can you help me pinpoint where these descriptions would be today? I found references to them in various documents that appear to involve my ancestors, dating back to 1792. At the time they were in Davidson. The later formation of new counties from Davidson may have affected where they are today. Thanks! 1. North side of Cumberland River on the south fork of Macadoe (or Macade?) Creek. (1792 deed reference). 2. Area of Edmonstons Branch to east fork of Mill Creek, beginning at mouth of Lick Branch to the head, thence to Edmonstons Spring down said branch to Sinking Creek, down said creek to Mill Creek east fork, up to the mouth of McCutcheons Branch, up to William Burris's thence to west fork at Stovall. (1799, appointment of road overseer). 3. Road from Williamson County line to top of Bells Hill, hands to work thereon beginning at Wm. Burris at county line along old line to Hides Quarter. Then direct course to Bells Hill then a direct course to Indian Spring. Then down said branch to Mill Creek including all inhabitants. (October 1800, oversee road work). Hello Marla, Here is some info on getting records from the National Archives. You can order request forms on the Internet from the National Archives for free on the items they will look up (census records, veterans records, etc.). You can get a NATF Form 80 for veterans records. There is three different files they will search on this form on your veteran- Pension Records, Bounty- Land Warrant Applications, and Military Service Records. You have to send a separate form for each file checked. They will bill you or you can use a credit card for the search and copies. The fee for this is $10.00. If they do not find anything then there is no charge. It takes roughly 4-6 weeks to get the copies. I have never looked up veterans from the War of 1812, but have got them to search on Confederate Veterans. They have sent copies of some good info, muster rolls, pay vouchers, capture papers, hospital records and etc. I highly recommend this service, it has helped me a lot since I live so far from a National Archive. Hope this helps... Jim J. Gray
I am looking for some connection to gr-gr grandfather, Joseph McDowell. He was 69 on the 1850 census of Davidson County. Wife, Polly, children, Violet, Mary Sufforonia(gr-grandmother) and Amanda. Email me if you can help. thanks, Jane Sanford Keppler Conroe, TX
Marla, Try cruising www.nara.gov (National Archives and Records Administration) for info on their archives. They have some microfilm records of 1812, among them "Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served during the War of 1812", 234 rolls. No. M602, 38/8-10 (Cabinet 38, Drawers 8-10). I don't know how to go about getting these, just have a list of them. The Great Lakes Region mailing address is 7358 S Pulaski Rd, Chicago, IL 60629. Good Luck, Gayle

William Mc Gaugh born 1720 Ireland, lived in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia 1766 to 1785, married Ruth Hill in Virginia, then moved to Davidson County, Tennessee. William, Ruth and a daughter Mattie were killed by Indians at Hickman Station near Nashville in 1789. Where is Hickman Station? Was it a town or a settlement??? Who were the parents of William Mc Gaugh and Ruth Hill ??? William was suppose to have fought in the Revolution, but no proof of that. Would appreciate any help. Carolyn S. Clark

Looking for George L. FLETCHER and Harriet FLETCHER. George FLETCHER was bondsman on a marriage between Charles H. Ryman and Margaret Bayne in 1863. Mary F. RYMAN is buried on the George FLETCHER lot in the Nashville City Cemetery in 1888 at the age of 67. Perhaps Mary F. is Mary FLETCHER RYMAN? Harriet FLETCHER is listed in the 1840 Davidson County census as 30-40 years old and head of household with children. She is next door to another RYMAN family. Who are these FLETCHERS and what is their relationship with the RYMANS? ANY information is appreciated! Jeanne
Looking for the family of Prudence Mary V. REDDICK, b. 1818-1819, in Tennessee. On her Davidson County 1834 marriage license, James REDDICK is bondsman. She married Charles RYMAN. Any REDDICK or RYMAN information is very appreciated. Jeanne
Thanks Debie for the information on the USGS mapping site. Also, for free indexes and catalogs (by state) of topographic and other published maps and indexes, call 800-435-7627. These maps show every mountain, valley, town, and many churches and cemeteries. I ordered some catalogs a year or two ago and had to eventually leave a polite complaint as they would not return my phone calls. After that I had no further problems. Sandi Bruce
Links to the following site and many useful sites for TN researchers can be found on the links page for the Metro Archives of Nashville and Davidson Co,. web site. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/3661/ Geographic Names Information System Data Base Query Form at: http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html This is an excellent site to search for geographic features such as creeks, towns, cemeteries. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), developed by the USGS in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. A search of Capuchin yielded the following results for TN and KY. Capuchin Creeks in Whitley County, KY and in Scott County, TN and a Post Office (historical) in Scott County, TN. I assume historical means the post office no longer exists, but do not know this for certain. Even though the sought after cemetery is not in the GNIS data base, many others are. Debie Cox
