>From the book, Tennessee Genealogical Records, Records of Early Settlers from State and County Archives, By Edythe Rucker Whitley, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1980, Baltimore, Maryland, Pg. 138: To the Honorable the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee. 1819, Davidson County. The undersigned citizens of Tennessee beg leave to represent to the Legislature that, owing to the law passed at the last session, authorizing the notes of the Nashville and State Bank to be received in payment for all debts due for taxes and to individuals, it has by this preference, caused the notes of the Farmers and Mechanics Bank of Nashville to depreciate and thereby many persons have been seriously injured, and the community deprived of a portion of its circulation emdium, which, at this time of embarrassment, is very interesting to them. It has generally been believed and admitted by all who have known the situation of this Bank, that its capacity to redeem its notes in circulation, is equal to any of the banks of this state; and we consider it entirely safe and solvent. We therefore pray, that owing to the great pecuniary distress, and as an act of justice to this institution that the legislature will grant it the same privileges and immunities as are granted to other banks, whose notes have been made currently law; and we will as in duty bound ever pray. 15 June 1820. Looking for relatives of my grandfather(or any of my family in Tenn) . I was born in Nashville, but moved to Ky in 1956 after my father's death and consequently know very little about his family. My father was Leonard Lindley FORD. His parents were Birdie Monroe Ford and Nancy Bell RITTENBERY. On my grandmother's side I know there are WILCHERS and WEBBS. I met Ethel Webb and a daughter Mildred Burnett nearly 40 years ago. These people lived in Nashville. I have found my grandfather in the 1880 Jackson Co. census as the child of John and Canzada Ford(also another child Will ). I do not find him at all in the 1900 Tenn. Soundex. In 1910 he is in Putnam Co, with wife and son (Leonard age 6) . Also living with them is a brother (Andrew Ford). I have very few things of my paternal grandmother, but one is an obit(no date) for Will Ford in Baxter,Tenn.- wife Margia Ann Dyer-children-Bailey,Harvey,Lloyd, Annie,Ethel, Myrtle,Carrie Bell, Mrs.Minnie Moss. I don't know if this if the same Will as on the census or not. My mother said she never heard any one mention my grandfather's family. I would appreciate any leads to either side of this family. Hello, does anyone know why so many migrants came from Spartanburg SC to the Davidson Co. Tn area, circa 1786? Thanks Barb Evans
I copied the information given here in case it helps someone researching in Davidson County...this is not my Phillips line; but maybe it will be of use to some of you for the other names given. Page 72-73: Bible Records and Marriage Bonds, compiled by Jeannette Tillotson Acklen; originally published, 1933, reprinted 1992 by Genealogical Publishing Company for Clearfield Company, Baltimore, MD. Joseph Philips was an early settler, emigrated in 1891 (Note: this date is obviously a typo, and probably should be 1791) with his wife, Milbrey Horn, from Edgecomb County, N.C. to Davidson County, and settled six miles north of Nashville. His ancestry for several generations, both paternal and maternal, were natives of Edgecomb Province under the Colonial government. "Joseph Philips served as guide for the Continental forces and participated in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Mathew Philips, brother of Joseph Philips, commanded a regiment of troops and died preceeding the Battle of Kings Mountain, from an overdraught of water." Joseph Philips served as Justice for Davidson County in 1796. Joseph Philips was born in Edgecomb County NC, Oct 31, 1763; died in Davidson County, TN May 22, 1832; married 1785, Milbrey Horn, born in Edgecomb County NC, Dec 4, 1764, daughter of Henry Horn, Jr., second husband of Sarah Battle, Hiliard, widow, died in Davidson Co TN Dec 19, 1851. Children: Mary "Polly" Phillips, born Sept 6, 1788 in NC, died in Davidson Co, TN, April 11, 1813, married April 29, 1804 as first wife of Jesse Wharton. Sarah "Sallie" Philips, born in NC, Aug 1, 1788 (this maybe should be 1789?), died in Davidson Co TN, Jan 19, 1859; married Feb 11, 1807, William Williams, born April 15, 1776, died March 6, 1862. Rebecca Philips, born in NC April 16, 1790; died in infancy. Martha Philips, born in Davidson County Dec 11, 1792; married Thomas Martin. Charlotte Phillips, born Nov 25, 1795; drowned in Cumberland River July 23, 1811. Henry Horn Philips, born Sept 5, 1797; died Oct 4, 1816, unmarried. Margaret "Peggy" Thomas Philips, born Sept 20, 1799, died ___, 1844; married, 1815, Josiah Fredrick Williams. Joseph Hooper Philips, born Jan 2, 1803, died in infancy. William Duncan Philips, born June 1804, died June 5, 1879; married, first, 1825, Susan B. Clark; died without issue, married second, 1828, Eliza Dwyer, born Aug 3, 1801, in Ireland; died Nov. 10, 1871. the homestead of Joseph Philips, six miles north of Nashville, TN., was known as "Sugar Tree Grove." He and his family are buried in private burial ground on his home place. == They are not connected (that I know of) to my Ezekiel Phillips, born 1778 in MD and was in Robertson County by early 1800's; however, his son Preston D. Phillips, born 1820 in Sumner County was married in 1835 to Amanda Appleton in Davidson County TN... I am still searching for more on Ezekiel's ancestry, and on Amanda Appleton. Hi Fellow Rooters - Searching for information about my paternal grandmother, Bessie (or Elizabeth) TURNER, b. 13-Oct-1864 in Tennessee, the city or county unknown. Not much else is known, except her death certificate showed her mother's maiden name to have been TRIBUE. Could that be a variant spelling of TRABUE? She and my grandfather, Thomas A. PRICE, (b. 26-Apr-1862 in Russellville, Logan Co., KY) were married 19-Sep-1883 in Tennessee, the city or county also unknown, and moved to Abilene, Taylor Co., TX 24-Dec-1884. A fellow rooter forwarded information that Jabob TRIBUE married Mahala Duff in McMinn Co., TN in 1848, and the 1870 Tennessee Census shows a Jacob, age 60, in Monroe Co. The same Census shows a Doct. J. TRIBUE in Jefferson County, and there have been a number of TRABUEs in Davidson County. Is there some connection here? Does anybody have any information on a TURNER male, born possibly 1837 to 1844, and a TRIBUE (or TRABUE) female, born possibly 1840 to 1844, who married probably earlier than 1863, somewhere in Tennessee, and had a daughter named Bessie, or possibly Elizabeth, who was born 13-Oct-1864. Thanks to all who have been so helpful - John E. Price JohneP4596@aol.com Ft. Worth, TX

Seeking documentation of marriage of Thomas Thompson and Elizabeth Coats (Coots), probably about 1775. Were they the parents of John Anderson Thompson who was born 1781? Land grants connect Thomas, Samuel Thompson and John Coats -- anyone have information on these folks? Charlotte
I'm trying to find information about the wife of the Rev. John Owen Gross, who died in Nashville on 4 Feb. 1971 and is buried in Westlawn Cemetery. I believe his wife was Harriet Bletzer Gross and that she predeceased him. If I could discover a date of death, then I would be able to write for a copy of the death certificate. Also, the information on John O. Gross's death certificate was given by Mrs. Edwin E. Smith, Jr., who may have been their daughter. If anyone knows if this is accurate and, if so, how I might contact Mrs. Smith if she is still living, I would very much appreciate knowing. Thanks. Bob Keener

I have received information on the correct person and address to write to for those of you who want to purchase a copy of The Sanders Family: An American Odyssey. This book is the history of the family of William and Mariah Sanders. William Sanders died in Davidson County, Tennessee, in 1830. Their 10 children moved to southern Illinois in the early 1830's. There are about 30 copies left of this book. Write to Charla Murphy, 17184 Fowler School Rd., Marion, Illinois 62959. For those of you who may have written to Holden E. Sanders, the author, he doesn't have any copies to sell. You should redirect your letters to Charla Murphy. I have this book and it is wonderful! - Jane Sanders

Jesse Maxwell was my 4g-gf. David was his brother. It is found in the court house record, that Jesse Maxwell's grant was the sixty-fourth in Davidson County. In locating his own lands, he also located, directly north of his own grant, the land due his brother David, for his heirs. The records in Nashville court house show, that Judge John OVERTON, bought from these heirs William and Moses, who about 1800 removed to Hamilton County, Northwest Territories, in the neighborhood of Cincinnati, the land belonging to their father. Upon this land he built his home "Traveler's Rest". Does anyone have any knowledge of Judge John Overton or the home he built "Traveler's Rest" Gene Phillips
