Thomas T. Nicholas was born in Nashville, TN according to his death certificate. His Civil War pension records state that he was married to Glaphrey Buck and with his list of children it appears that James was their child. According to his probate records his daughter Glaphrey was deceased and Joshua's whereabouts were unknown. The census state that his father was born in PA and his mother was born in Wales. Hello again, Davidson County listers: I recently received a copy of a Davidson County document dated 1848 that gave a widow support money in the amount of $225. This represented one year's allowance from the date of her husband's death. Does anyone know how the amount of this widow's support allowance was determined? For example, was there a set amount for one year that was used as a standard? Or did this amount vary according to the size of the dead husband's estate or operating expenses to maintain his estate? Did it vary according to how many children he had? And if there were children involved, would they be mentioned in this type of document? Jeanne Johnson

It works fine for me. But I know that when I sent some other people there a while back, they couldn't "get in" , apparently they didn't have TelNet on their computer. It came with mine, and just worked automatically, so I wasn't aware that some people didn't have it. It can be downloaded for free at http://statelibrary.dcr.state.nc.us/NCSLHOME.HTM click on "catalog help" near the top of the page to go to the page that explains it & has the link to download it for free. Dear Fellow Davidson County Listers: A few of you that have tried to access the Internet address I provided in an earlier message today are having problems. I cannot explain why but perhaps you need to access the site by first going to the library's home page, and then proceeding to the electronic catalog page. Go first to the following address listed below (home page of the Public Library of Nashville and Davidson County). Once there, click on "Electronic Catalog". Once there, click on the blue words "Library Online Catalog via Telnet." From here, you can follow my earlier instructions to view the genealogy records. I am sure this will work, but would someone please try it and verify it for us? Thanks! This is such a great resource that I really want everyone to be able to access it. Online resources for Davidson County can be found at the Nashville library. These include: Marriages 1864-1905 Obits, 1978- Photos 1940-1976 Marriages can be searched by surnames for brides or grooms, or you can scroll through the entire listing (thousands!) which are arranged alphabetically. To log into the library online catalog, go to: http://www.nashv.lib.tn.us/ecat.html Once at that page, click on the blue lettering that reads, "Library Online Catalog via Telnet." Follow instructions on the next screen to log in. Once in, you will be asked to make a choice of what type of computer terminal you are using. The most common type for home computers is VT100, so type "V". The program will ask you to confirm this selection by typing "Y" or "N" so you will type "Y". Once you are past this little bit of technicality, you will be given a menu choice. Select "L" for Local History Indexes. From here, your menu consists of the marriage index, obit index, and photos at Metro Archives. If you have difficulty and need more detailed instructions, email me. This is a wonderful and valuable on-line research which I have visited many times. I hope you enjoy it. Jeanne Johnson
It's a hot, hot morning in Florida, fellow Davidson County Listers, but I am on the trail of: Charles H. MOSS who married Eudora M. LAMBERT on Aug 22, 1869, in Davidson County and William E. WHITWORTH who married Cora L. BOSWORTH on Nov. 29, 1882, in Davidson County Eudora (nicknamed Mattie) is the daughter of Matthew LAMBERT and Mary Ann TAYLOR who married in 1846 in Davidson County. I would like to find out who Matthew LAMBERT was and who Mary Ann's TAYLOR's family were also. Mary Ann was born about 1830 in TN, according to the census, and her second husband was A.J. BOSWORTH whom she married on Dec. 19, 1851, in Davidson County after her first husband, Matthew LAMBERT, left her a young widow with infant daughter. I have gobs of information to share on the BOSWORTHs to the lucky persons researching Moss, Lambert, Taylor, and Whitworth. Thanks for your time, Jeanne Johnson
Christopher Stump is undoubtedly the son of Frederick Stump, one of the original founders and settlers of Fort Nashborough in 1780. Frederick Stump was of German descent, originally lived in Pennsylvania in the 1760s, migrated to Georgia around the start of the Revolution where he commanded a small company under Marion (See Seedtime on the Cumberland by Harriette Arnow). He later migrated overland in the winter of 1779 through Kentucky with a party of settlers to establish what is now Nashville, TN and settled at Heatons Station. He was granted 640 acres of land for this service on White's Creek Pike. My ancestor lived adjacent to Stump for over 15 years between 1780 and 1795.
